T - 11:45 and counting
Another 11 hours and 45 minutes, I'll be in the stand. Hopefully, I won't nod off and will see one of the shooters I've seen around. AM's will be spent hunting my property with my landowners tag and the PM's will be spent somewhere on the other 400 acres I have permission to hunt. My goal is to have a shot at 'ole grandpa before the rut.
Good luck to all you other bow harvesters! |

RE: T - 11:45 and counting
Just got back from driving the North road. At 7:00 PM, 4 slickheads ran across my drive in front of me. At 7:05, 4 more slickheads crossed the road heading South towards my property. At 7:10 PM, I watched another 5 slickheads walk across the road heading South. I turned around to come back to the house as all the slickheads were headed towards my oak grove. As I came back up the drive, a buck who I will not target for a couple more years, crossed in front of me right at the spot where the slickheads crossed earlier. I'm going out in the AM with high hopes of a shooter coming by the oak grove, but have a greater probability of seeing ole grandpa (16 pointer) in the evening on the property to my East. Supposed to be 45 degrees in the morning! 10:20 to go!

Well the first hunt has come and gone. It's amazing how different it is going into the woods during the pitch black is.I finally found my stand in the dark 5 minutes after I got there. During the daylight hours, I could take you there blindfolded, but could I find it that easy this morning? Heck no! Anyway, when I left the house it was 50 degrees w/no wind. When I got back home @ 9:00, it was 44 with winds out of the North @ 10-15 mph.
I was in the stand by 6:00 and no sooner got sat down and a couple deer walked down the same trail as I did. It was way too dark to even make out if they were bucks or does. They were headed to the bedding area. After that, I didn't see or hear anything. As I came out of the oak grove to the pond dam, there were the 5 turkeys that hang around here standing halfway across the dam. They say turkeys are wiley birds and real skittish. Not these 5. As I drew closer, they all bunched up on one side of the path as I walked by on the other side. I could have taken an arrow out and stabbed one I was so close to them. Hunt one was no good, hoping this evening's hunt will fair better. I'll be back in the stand by 5:00 as the deer are moving by 7:00. |
