T - 11:45 and counting
Another 11 hours and 45 minutes, I'll be in the stand. Hopefully, I won't nod off and will see one of the shooters I've seen around. AM's will be spent hunting my property with my landowners tag and the PM's will be spent somewhere on the other 400 acres I have permission to hunt. My goal is to have a shot at 'ole grandpa before the rut.
Good luck to all you other bow harvesters! |

RE: T - 11:45 and counting
Just got back from driving the North road. At 7:00 PM, 4 slickheads ran across my drive in front of me. At 7:05, 4 more slickheads crossed the road heading South towards my property. At 7:10 PM, I watched another 5 slickheads walk across the road heading South. I turned around to come back to the house as all the slickheads were headed towards my oak grove. As I came back up the drive, a buck who I will not target for a couple more years, crossed in front of me right at the spot where the slickheads crossed earlier. I'm going out in the AM with high hopes of a shooter coming by the oak grove, but have a greater probability of seeing ole grandpa (16 pointer) in the evening on the property to my East. Supposed to be 45 degrees in the morning! 10:20 to go!

Well the first hunt has come and gone. It's amazing how different it is going into the woods during the pitch black is.I finally found my stand in the dark 5 minutes after I got there. During the daylight hours, I could take you there blindfolded, but could I find it that easy this morning? Heck no! Anyway, when I left the house it was 50 degrees w/no wind. When I got back home @ 9:00, it was 44 with winds out of the North @ 10-15 mph.
I was in the stand by 6:00 and no sooner got sat down and a couple deer walked down the same trail as I did. It was way too dark to even make out if they were bucks or does. They were headed to the bedding area. After that, I didn't see or hear anything. As I came out of the oak grove to the pond dam, there were the 5 turkeys that hang around here standing halfway across the dam. They say turkeys are wiley birds and real skittish. Not these 5. As I drew closer, they all bunched up on one side of the path as I walked by on the other side. I could have taken an arrow out and stabbed one I was so close to them. Hunt one was no good, hoping this evening's hunt will fair better. I'll be back in the stand by 5:00 as the deer are moving by 7:00. |

There's an oak tree on the neighbors land that has a lickin' stick the bucks have been frequenting. That's where I'll be this evening. Hope they come in early enough for tracking w/o search lights!:)

Not to change the subject or anything, but my neighbor who has 100 acres SE of my property came by and asked me when I was gonna get my *** down into his woods and kill some ****ing deer? I told him I had not had time to recon his property yet and probably wouldn't be down there this year. His response had to do with bovine fecal matter. He told me to get in his truck and then he drove me down to an area of his timber next to a cornfield and where two streams come together. He showed me all the tracks crossing both streams and said if you can't shoot a big buck down here, you ain't worth a ****! He's a crotchety old fart (older than me too!) and he uses part of his property to train coyote dogs. There are so many deer in the area that some of his dogs won't track coyotes if there is a deer outside the fence. They'll just stand there and bark at the deer, who are not afraid of them since they are on the other side of an 8' tall fence. So this evening I'll be sitting down there where the two creeks come together in a ground blind. I saw signs of A LOT of big deer crossing both streams into this section of land. I'll let y'all know later how it goes.

Saw two bucks, a bunch of does and 1,435,659 mosquitos this evening. I got down to a spot where there were 3 trails crossing the creek with the majority of hoof prints pointing to my side. Set up the ground blind and was in place by 4:10 PM. At about 4:45, the young'uns started East towards the field along the top of the hill. Ten minutes later the does started along the same trail. @ 5:30, two bucks made their way about half way up the hill. The wind was really whipping up out of the North, but in the valley bottom it was really still. After that, the skeeters came in wave after wave. I started to feel like I was at Pearl Harbor and this was December 7th, 1941. I didn't see another deer. After dark, I made my way along the fenceline back to the ATV and came home.[&o]

I 'bout choked when I read it. I personally don't believe there is one of us on here that do not get pumped when the arrow strikes the intended target whether it be a bulls-eye or a deer. Part of the enjoyment people get out of hunting is that adrenaline rush. Those who deny that are either being untruthful with us or themselves.
But its still fun when the Preacher gets it from one of the flock!:D |
