The wind, though slight, would be blowing into the field .... so why 1?

Evening hunt. The plan is to catch them on their way to the field. Hence stand 1 on a SW wind.

RE: Real quick....Where to hunt

Well....I learned a few things, anyways. I got to see the fence crossings.....noted the visible trails (although faint).....and while I was up at hunting height....I noted a tree for future use. So...all in all....not an unproductive sit. If I kill a deer from here in the future....I'd say it was a really good hunt.

I only saw one lone unidentified grey rocket......going as noted on the drawing at breakneck speed....lol. I have no idea what spooked it.....but it was scootin'.

Thanks for all the inputs. I only saw Matt's before I went out....and I wanted to really hunt that spot, anyways.

I actually went a little south of where i had the "1" marked. I tookk some photos from my stand. It's really unlike any terrain I hunt, here, in there.

Here's the views I had from stand....

To my east.....

To my South......

To my North.......

To My West.......

That's a bean field to my west....and I was hoping to catch something coming there. I'll make a note of the bean field on the aerial.

Red line is pasture fence.

Gonna save No. 2 for a good wind and get Lisa to drop me off REALLY early one morning....right past the woodsline......then go on up the road.

I'm thinking I try it for a morning, first.

are you hunting tomorrow?? (pardon me while I live vicariously through you :D)

RE: Real quick....Where to hunt

Yep. But this "playing the wind" **** is getting to me in a BAD way. I'm gonna have to hunt the SAME woodlot I've hunted the last two mornings......just because I don't have anywhere else to hunt on a N wind. Winds forecast from the NW, tomorrow AM.....AGAIN.

Life was SO much easier when I "forgot the wind....and just hunted".....lol.

Matt / PA 09-30-2008 07:21 PM

RE: Real quick....Where to hunt

You don't have ANYWHERE else looking at all those woodlots that you can try on N wind?
You're kidding right?:D

For the record I wouldn't have picked where you sat tonight had I seen the terrain. ;)LOL
Think security type cover with good trails through them to those fields, bucks aren't that dumb. They're probably bedding in the same type of cover they will use to actually enter any remaining food fields.

If you're not findning bucks right now it's probably because they're where you don't want to go. That or they're just snoozing til' dark. LOL

jjlemm001 09-30-2008 07:24 PM

RE: Real quick....Where to hunt

Just a question. If you are trying to catch them as they head to the field wouldn't #2 be better for they would be coming from the S-SW as the wind was blowing that way. I see they could also be coming from N to S, but there's more cover to the S for the deer to move in relation to #1 correct? Wouldn't #2 work (course not see what is to the right of #2 out of picture) but would it not provide more cover for the deer to move but also keep you down wind of them too? Sorry I am trying to learn as much as possible for this is the first season I will be hunting deer.

RE: Real quick....Where to hunt

I'm trying to pay the wind as best I can. I thought that little spot tonight might be a spot they'd use to get from woodlot to thicket....or vice versa. I think they're feeding on the acorns....so I thought I might catch one coming from the N to the S woodlot. I figured they'd cross through there.....rather than the open field.

I'll go ANYWHERE. You tell me where YOU would hunt tomorrow in a NW wind. I thought about this corner.....but my scent would be blowing across the bean field.....and I'd have to go through the entire woodlot (entering from the N) if I wen tin there.....to keep from blowing everything out of the bean field.

Where would you go?

Matt / PA 09-30-2008 07:29 PM

RE: Real quick....Where to hunt

Is there anything left to eat in the fields?

As successful as you have been, maybe they like the way you smell ..[8D]

GMMAT 09-30-2008 07:32 PM

RE: Real quick....Where to hunt

The fieds have really green soy beans. I thought they were completely off of them....but the only time I sat the stand depicted.....I had all of the deer I saw staging and going into the bean field, that evening (Saturday).

So yeah....they're still on them, too.

Matt / PA 09-30-2008 07:35 PM

RE: Real quick....Where to hunt

Then you need to come in somewhere BEHIND them back into the cover.......not near the fields, They could be leaving the fields early and you'll just hear footsteps going by if you get too close.

Think about what you see as the most likely bedding cover for them........that might also allow them to much a couple white oak acorns coming back from the beans. Get tight to that bedding cover way off the fields on the most likely looking trail..........on the S side of it

Might be tough to find in the dark though. ;)

Matt:

You know the property line on the W side of the road. I'm RIGHT on it in that aerial where I show the stand I sat in Saturday.

I could sit in the lower end of that woodlot you and Rob and I hunted....and I've got tacks to a tree, there. I sat there last night......NADA.

Any ideas on the new land? You know most of the old land.

I would be comfortable hunting any of the spots I have marked in red on a Northwast wind, considering you can set up a stand in the dark or have prior knowledge.

GMMAT 09-30-2008 08:00 PM

RE: Real quick....Where to hunt

Oneshot...

Hey thanks. I'll level with ya.....

Your most NE stans site....I don't have a clue which tree I'd get in. It's mostly pines, there....and REAL thick. I just don't think I could get in a good one, there.

Your furthest NW stand....I'v ehunted there....but again....I don't think I could find it in the dark. It's really a thicket, there....and there are only two trees that are big enough to get a climber in. They all pretty much look the same.....so I'm just not sure I could find one of the two. Just being honest.

Your SW stand....I'm SURE I could get in there. It's the back side of where I was, tonight. It's pretty open in there.....and "who knows?". The only bad thing is.....it's inside the cow pasture...and the fence above it is not easy to cross (no "openings". I just don't know[X(]

Your stand nearest the road.....is right behind my landowner's house....and it's inside the fence, too. I've never....and I bet NO ONE has ever hunted from there.

I suppose it would be worth a try. Again....I'd have to just pick a blind tree in the dark, though. In that spot....I'm not adverse to that.

Oneshot7 09-30-2008 08:07 PM

RE: Real quick....Where to hunt

The small block of woods sparked my intrest. I have seen bucks bed down in a small block of woods because of the lack of pressure to the smaller block. (I can carry you to two spots and prove that, unfortunately I can not hunt either spot, only spotlights) If you can get in there, they may use the woods to sniff the field out that is up above them, and could be a good spot to catch a buck checking the wind.

GMMAT 09-30-2008 08:10 PM

RE: Real quick....Where to hunt

Checking the wind for what?

Serious question.

Oneshot7 09-30-2008 08:15 PM

RE: Real quick....Where to hunt

Any foreign odors that may be in the field, getting blown back into the block of woods. It is more common for Bucks to use this method during the Rut to scent check for does in the fields. AKA staging area

Matt / PA 09-30-2008 08:16 PM

RE: Real quick....Where to hunt

Jeff get somewhere below those far western pushpins........the furthest one left has my interest.

If those are beans, they're secluded beans, get back away from them off that inside corner in that little triangle field.
You have to think AWAY from the fields right now for Am hunts(no offense Oneshot)
By the look of the different color woods it looks like there might be some transition there between 2 types of cover or a bit of a depression angling SSE away from it?

That's where I would concentrate.

GMMAT 09-30-2008 08:18 PM

RE: Real quick....Where to hunt

I gotta tell ya....I'm a clean slate when it comes to stuff like this (and I know about scent checking during the rut.....but I had to ask 'what for'....in Sept)......so I'd sit in there in a minute if it sounds like a good idea. Now I just gotta get in there. I have no idea how I'm gonna be able to do that.....lol. I can really only enter down the road....from the N.

It's a pretty small woodlot, though....maybe 4-5 acres....and partially fenced.

You think it's worth a go?

None taken as they are not in the field in the AM, for the most part, they are traveling from. I was taking it as an overall stand location choice for a NW wind. I still believe that the small wood lot can be used as a great spot for the rut.
