Snort wheeze
I have hunted for years and have heard buck grunt but I have never heard them " snort wheeze " I see on hunting shows they advertise calls of all sorts but it seams lately they are pushing this snort wheeze. Is this truly something that will make a buck come to you or is this just another marketing gimmick?

RE: Snort wheeze
When I am in the woods and I am trying to call in a buck if the grunts aren't working I will use the Snort Wheeze, Now keep in mind that the Snort Wheeze is a challenge, so if the buck in not thinking he is the doninent buck the snort wheeze could scare him off. I have had bucks keep walking away from grunts, and used the snort wheeze and they turned right around got all puffed up and stiff and headed right to me. but then I had scared off some also. I use the snort wheeze as a last ditch effort to try to get him to commit. A good combination is some grunts a little rattling and estrus bleats. Thats what works for me.

Never heard it in the woods.....but from what I've seen on TV,.....I woudn't waste my money on a "call" to produce this sound. I think I could do it with my mouth, pretty easily.
I use it when I get blown at when I'm going to stand in the darkness. Does it "work".....lol....who knows????[&:] |
RE: Snort wheeze
A few years ago I had a buck come in to my stand well before dark. It was pitch black but I knew it was a buck by the way he was walking. Then, out of nowhere, he did a snort wheeze. That was really neat to hear! The worst part was it was so dark I couldn't even pick out a shadow of him. To this day I wonder how big he was...the little ones don't do that!

RE: Snort wheeze
Getting to see a big mature buck all fired up and let out a snort wheeze is a really cool thing. I drilled one at 10 yds right after he let out a good one.
In the right time, it can bring a buck in, but it can also send one heading for cover. |
RE: Snort wheeze
I've heard it done, but I always thought cheap beer and hot chili the night before waswhat caused it.[:o]

RE: Snort wheeze
I'm sitting in my stand one morning last year and right before first light I hear a deer chasing other deer. Then he turns, starts walking the other way and lets out a big snort wheeze. As to say, "who wants some!" He disappeared just before first light, so I never got a look at him. I'm sure he was a definite shooter.
Next day, I added another call to my arsenal. |
RE: Snort wheeze
Last year, we had a nice buck my son referred to as "Booka Buck". He would regularly pass within 50 yards of our house in the very early morning or late dusk. Often when I was taking the trash out or working outside, he would stop and snortwheeze at me as if I were trespassing on HIS property.

RE: Snort wheeze
Been fortunate enough to seeand hear several. I was running the camera in IL a few years ago and got good video of a decent buck doing it several times. I called in and killed a nice buck in '06 by doing it with my mouth. He was completely uninterested in my grunts, but turned and came on a string at the snort wheeze.

RE: Snort wheeze
I never really thought of it before last year. Last season we had a couple bucks snort wheeze... and i called in a nice buck last year after he wouldn't respond do anything else, a snort wheeze will turn on a dominant buck.

RE: Snort wheeze
Sounds like more people have had success with it than not. Maybe I will have to get me one and see what happens.

RE: Snort wheeze
Primos came out with a new call this year called the Buck Roar, it produces deep grunts and growls and has the Snort wheeze also, very good call IMO>>

RE: Snort wheeze
I've tried it a few times on my wife but she never responds. I must not be the dominant buck in my area.......Sorry I had to.:D

RE: Snort wheeze
a cool story to add about the snort wheeze, the buck i shot last year did it twice and it was loud and i remember watching the drool fly out of his mouth when he did it, coolest thing ever. anyways i was wacthing a doe feed on some corn when she started looking behind her, 2 bucks came out in front of me. one was real wide and had white antlers, the other (mine) tall and tight with chocolate antlers, mine walked frombehind the other buck . as soon as they seen the doe tempers were flaring. the wide rack started rubbing on a pine tree and mine started making a scrape and gettin all puffed up with his ears pinned back. then the wide rack started scraping, my buck turned around, and the whole time im thinking im about to watch 2 nice bucks fight! my buck does a snort wheeze twice and pretty much walks the other buck off about 20 yds to my right. the wide rack buck had a lil better rack but mine had a huge body and i knew he was king of his woods. my buck started walking towards the doe when i finally let the arrow fly. he had his head up and was scent checking the air. the whole hunt was a really cool expirence, with the rubbing, scraping andgrunting, etc.

RE: Snort wheeze
I have never heard any noises from deer till I started bow hunting. I think, just my opinion, the deer are sojittery when gun season starts that they just don't do it much.
