Sorry Rob.....Doe down in NC

Looks like you were a couple days late and a woodlot short. I went into a new area, tonight.....mainly just to scout and see what I could see. I've never hunted there.....so I looked at the topo......found what looked to be a good travel route.....and went in.

I found a gulch that had several trails converging...and with a NNE wind....I knew this spot wouldn't disturb too much. It was on the low SW side of the woodlot. I got in the gulch, because I could see forever up each ridge. I thought I'd see them moving ....even if they weren't in range. Scouting from stand.

I got set up at 4:30. At 5:20 a doe appeared from directly in front of me. She started to feed away from me.....but turned and came back my way. She was almost diretly below me....and then started to walk away. She stayed up-wind the entire time....and was 8 yds quartering away when I shot her.

Here's my stand site.

In front of me...

To my east

To the south

To the west

Entrance Wound

Exit wound

Harvest 1

Harvest 2

One more of the boys from this weekend.......I had a great time, guys.

Congratulations on the nice doe! It looks like you hit her with a musket ball! What type of broadheads do you use?

Frickin Hold out.

:eek::D

From what I know that looks like a good one. LOL
Great shot too, can you believe that shot is only about 2" different from mine? Unreal. LOL
Congrats!

Nice doe Jeff, and even better shot.

What kind of release did you elect to use this year? I know you were debating on what you were going to use but never saw you say either way.

I also meant to add that they don't go far when hit there. ;)

Once again, congratulations.

Congrats Jeff!! What a hole ....I have been looking my Rages over tonight and the tips are not sharp ...do you sharpen yours?

Anyway great shot and cool pictures.

8yd shot with a compound? Where the heck is the stick and string Jeff? That would have beenperfect first shot with it. Man, you dissappoint me.:D

RE: Sorry Rob.....Doe down in NC

What are the temps like there?
50's at night.....70's during the day.

What type of broadheads do you use?
That would be a rage 2-blade typical entrance wound.

I hear ya, Matt. I never had a chance to hunt this woodlot....but we'll SURELY get in there next time. We have PLENTY of room to spread out. I couldn't believe how expansive it is when you get in there. I ended up seeing 6....and had 5 of them in bow range.

What kind of release did you elect to use this year?
Carter Just-B-Cuz.....witht he tru-ball st3 for a backup.

PT....I don't sharpen the tips. That's just a "primer";)

Doe went 40 yds....and I watched her pile up. She was dead in less than 10 seconds.

I hunt from 23', Brandon. I have a 25' haul line....and when it gets taut.......I'm "there"....lol.

I really can't get over how "deery" it looks in this woodlot. I had them come from 3 different directions.....but I was honestly hoping I'd find a good buck travel route. I know I need to move, now....lol. I'm heading up the ridge, tomorrow....if I get the right wind. I saw one head there and one come from there. "WE" (yes, WE) will need to get in there, early.

My son wants to go with me, tomorrow. I'm washing our camo, right now.:);)

Too cool!! I know in the past your son hasn't been super interested in hunting, but he may take to it. Either way, it will be good bonding time.

Jeff, is NC's doe population really high?

Jeff, I hope you and Mitch, experience some success tomorrow. I doubt it will take much to get him REALLY interested. It seems like he's on the "edge". I know him hunting is something you want, very much.;)

Good luck to the both of you, let us know.

RE: Sorry Rob.....Doe down in NC

I can't speak for the entire state, Robby.....but in the area I hunt....I'd say 50/sq. mi. was a conservative estimate. It could be a little higher.

Now you can go 4-5 properties over and not see those numbers. In the area I was in tonight.....i'd say it was less than that. I primarily hunt a "traingle" of property.....that encompasses 2.23sq. mi. . In this area.....the herd is dense. Outside that (where i was, tonight).....not so high.....but still too many.

I'm hoping the people I have here hunting with me can take a few.

Buckmaster....if you read this......get your NC license. We'll have plenty of time t hunt. Call me, tomorrow.;)

I'll also add....that this "triangle" I refer to is not residential. Other than a few homes (farms, mostly) littered along the roadways.....the 2.23 sq. mi. has NO inhabited dwellings, within. It's old farmlands.

Jeff, does the property you took this doe on, have high hopes for a good buck?

In the pictures, it looks so much like the land, here.

Matt-

I have no idea of what might be lurking, there. I know there have been some good deer taken within a mi. of this spot.....so we'll see.

We'll take does, there, until the end of this month. Then....we'll lay off them on this woodlot.....and take them on others. I'll probably not even hunt the west side of this lot, early. It just looks too good to spoil by stinking it up.

Compare these pictures Jeff. This is from a set I hung yesterday. As you can see, the land is VERY similar and not to mention VERY thick.

I was thinking the SAME THING!!!! The place I'll be in Saturday is THICK, like if you're on the ground, a lot of the places you have to cut things away just so you can draw your bow. The little open area I'm headed to isn't quite as bad, but it's got a lot more THICK than most of what I saw in the south when I lived down there, unless I was in a swamp.

Jeff,
CONGRATS on the doe, perfect shot placement, looks like you should've cut her aorta right off of the top of her heart!!!!
