Will a deer live it is hit in the back ham
I was wondering if a deer will live if hit in the hind ham. I don't want to be hammered on this but about 10 years ago I hit one in the hind ham. To this day I have wondered many times what happened to that deer. I do remember looking for several weeks and going back to the area many times after that and also through the years thinking I might find that deer. The deer moved just when the shot was released. This is something I am not proud of but it happened.

If the main blood lines are missed it's likely nothing more than a flesh wound and they will live however, they have a major artery in the rear ham that could easily be hit but it's likely you'll have plenty of blood and see or hear them go down if hit there.

There is no definate answer to that question.
It may have blead to death or it may have survived. |
RE: Will a deer live it is hit in the back ham
most likely as long as it didn't hit an artery or vein. on my lease, one of the guys shot the SAME deer twice (at different times) with an arrow just below the spine about mid body and that deer is still alive. we have TC pics and both hunts were videoed. BUCK FEVER!! i have also seen a three legged deer that i videoed. his whole right leg was torn off at the shoulder and he survived. most have got hung in a fence. they are very tough animals

I do believe that deer did live. I looked many many hours for it and never found him. There was no blood that I could find after returning the next day. I did not go look that night after he was hit but couldn't find and blood at all. You would think infection would set in or may not do well walking if it lived but I think with all the time I spent looking for that deer I would of found something.

I hit a small limb on a shot one time and my arrow deflected severely....the broadhead hit him in the rear right ham and exited out low on the middle of his left side....it sliced his artery in his ham and he bled out and was stone cold dead in about 10 minutes.

as others state all depends i hit a caribou there when he spun It was dead in 80 yards. friend got 56" moose years ago and we found 6" piece of arrow and broadhead in thigh muscle, was well healed and bull was not limping or having any problems. if the major blood vessals are hit they are not going to last long and there should be a significant blood trail. with dead animal at the end.

It really does depend. I saw a whitetail walk 50 yards after an arrow to the ham, if you hit that artery back there, it is quick.

If you hit the crotoed(sp) artery then that is a dead deer.

I hunt this area each year and think about the hit on this deer. I am convinced that I did not hit the artery becauseI couldn't find any blood. I guess like some of you experienced that it would heal up and live a deers life.
