Which Scent works?
Anybody use scents? I've never tried them. I saw on t.v. where a guy would use a rag soaked in DOE IN HEAT (I think) and attatch it to a fishing pole and cast it. He would then real the line back in near his stand. He did this so as not to contaminate the area by walking around too much. Supposedlly the bucks would pick up the scent and be lured towards him. At the end of the scent trail, he would drop some raccoon urine, so the deer would stop in confusion. Sounded like a good idea and I was going to experiment with different scents next season. What scents do you use, and have you had any luck? Thank you.

RE: Which Scent works?
I have used some scents with good results, but the more I hunt and learn about game, the less I tend to use them. I prefer to find good game trails and remain undetectd. I am not saying scents don't work, but I realy have killed far more deer without them!

RE: Which Scent works?
I would be careful of using any protein based scents. Why?, Because fresh deer urine smells nothing like aged urines. Bacterias begin breaking down the urine immediately it exits the animal. This enables others animals to know exactly how old the urine is. I have dissected urine bladders out of bucks and re-used the urine the same day or following few days. The urine always smells sweet unlike most chemically broken down store bought products. I have also frozen fresh urine and used it a few weeks later. I use to use the urines on the market, but got many negative results. Nothing consistent.
With a little research it wasn't hard to realize that urine rots for a purpose. Deer know exactly how old urine is and even know how long ago another deer has frequented the area. I don't use any scents other than "Buckfever" synthetics scents for making mock scrapes, because the synthetics does'nt rot and I use freshly dissected urine from local deer when the opportunity arises. As far as cover scents go I like to be as clean and scent free as I possiblely can and yep I use a scent lok suit and like it, then I play the wind. The only cover scent I use, would be the scent that impregnates my hunting cloths due to hanging them in a ceder or whitefir tree outside my house. Good luck Shed |

RE: Which Scent works?
Shed1, Thanks for the warning on protein based scents. I'll be sure to steer clear of them. I'll have to give "BUCKFEVER" a try next season too. I was lucky enough this year because I bought a "buddy-system" stand (fixed position) for me and my son to sit. I placed it early in the season, and noticed that a buck had put his own scrape down a couple of weeks after the stand was in place, probably 25 yards away. My son and I were fortunate enough to see 3 different bucks and a couple of does during the rut. We saw all 3 bucks in the same day. I think one of the does may have been in heat.

RE: Which Scent works?
I have to agree with 5shot. With experience I have found that using no-scent is the way to go. I have used doe urine with some success on young bucks. But, I have never gotten a big buck to come into a scent. If you can find where the does are, a buck will be behind them at some point. I hunt where the does are.

RE: Which Scent works?
Good advice BobCo19-65, I've seen quite a few does near my stand area. But I haven't seen anything but tracks since gun season. I think I'm in a pretty good area. I had my neighbor who has hunted the area his whole life help me find a spot for my stand. He told me I would see deer there, and sure enough I did. Maybe scents are a waste of time. Thanks for everybody's input.

RE: Which Scent works?
I have had some decent results with scents. Mainly jamesvalley, and trails end 307. Nothing takes place of true woodsmanship.

RE: Which Scent works?
Give them a try in your area and see what happens. But don't get caught up in a lot of over-hype on scents. Remember that your nature and it's scents in your area will always be the most effective.
