RE: gut knife
I've never been a fan of guthooks.
The Gator line from Gerber are tremendous knives. I've carried a folding gator, 1/2 serrated, for several years now. |
RE: gut knife
thanks for the tip not sure how it would work. got the idea from the plastic gut hooks that have razor blades.
ORIGINAL: rynigner Last year I grabbed my Elk knife by mistake when heading out for whitetail. Got a doe and my knife was too large to cut around the anus. I carry a razor knife in my truck always, and used it around the anus. It did a great job, but I would not want to use it anywhere else..... But to each his own, give it a shot and see how it turns out. |
RE: gut knife
Gut hooks are useless IMHO. Just buy a good quality knife and sharpen it with the Lanskey.

RE: gut knife
All I use is a Gerber Gator Mate folding knife with a 3 inch blade. I use it for gutting, splitting chest bones open, skinning and boning. Cost about 30 bucks. Probably has cut up more than 30 bucks. LOL

RE: gut knife
Been using the same Buck fixed blade for 20 years. It's one of their smallest fixed blade knives and it'slucky.Buck steel has always been a pain in the butt to sharpen but I make it a mission to sharpen it to perfection. Always start with aSmith fine diamond and finish with a good old wet stone. Gotta have a sharp knive.
You know a dedicated hunter when he has a sharp blade and a dull knife should be a crime. |
RE: gut knife
Planter, I have 3 Buck knives of different sizes..119, 102 and another smaller one they don't make anymore. They're pretty, but dang I can't get them sharp. I gave up when I found the Gator.

RE: gut knife
A good Gerber, schrade, or buck 3" lock back will do the trick...I have all....they all are different to sharpen, but get a sharpening kit and learn by experience....i honestly always keep a cheap rapala sharpener in my stuff and touch up my knives constantly and hardly ever have ANY issues...

RE: gut knife
David.. You are not kidding about bucks knives being a pain to sharpen. Thats some hard steel. The best knives to sharpen are the older ones. Thay are just a little softer and stain a bit but even with a wetstone you can make them like a razer. I like having a little more carbon in my kitchen knives. A couple of strops on the steel and your right back in it.
