gut knife

ok guys last year i bought a remington gut knife it has a gut hook on it.

When i got home i noticed it was not sharp at all. I friend sharpened it for me.
Well i got all my stuff out and it is just to dull to use for anything wont even cut cardboard. I was thinking about buying a new knife.
What would you recommend for gutting a deer.
Also what do you guys recommend for sharpening knifes. i have thought about getting a lansky kit.

Gerber gator II with a gut hook and serrated blade. I like the serrated blade for cutting through the rib cage. The blade is sharp enough to shave with.

To answer your first question, something sharp. A lansky kit works great.

+1 I also use a lansky kit, I never had anyone around to teach me how to sharpen a knife proper on a stone.... The Lansky Kit is great, very very hard to screw it up and capable of putting on a variety of edges!

something i thought about for opening the deer up was a drywall knife my dad got from lowes.
It is a folding knife but takes razor blades that are replaceable gut the deer throw the razor away. what do you guys think of that.

The tips break off too easy, don't want that too happen and you discover it with your hand... I would think it would be too much trouble getting through the breast plate. Having a larger blade comes in handy as well when you are in the chest cavity...

I swear by my Old timer 1940t
Great blade shape, perfect size, easy to shardpen and hods an edge well.
i have dressed deer with damn near anything tho.
I have a friend who swears by the disposable round blade scalpels

Last year I grabbed my Elk knife by mistake when heading out for whitetail. Got a doe and my knife was too large to cut around the anus. I carry a razor knife in my truck always, and used it around the anus. It did a great job, but I would not want to use it anywhere else..... But to each his own, give it a shot and see how it turns out.

I've never been a fan of guthooks.

The Gator line from Gerber are tremendous knives. I've carried a folding gator, 1/2 serrated, for several years now.

Gut hooks are useless IMHO. Just buy a good quality knife and sharpen it with the Lanskey.

All I use is a Gerber Gator Mate folding knife with a 3 inch blade. I use it for gutting, splitting chest bones open, skinning and boning. Cost about 30 bucks. Probably has cut up more than 30 bucks. LOL

Been using the same Buck fixed blade for 20 years. It's one of their smallest fixed blade knives and it'slucky.Buck steel has always been a pain in the butt to sharpen but I make it a mission to sharpen it to perfection. Always start with aSmith fine diamond and finish with a good old wet stone. Gotta have a sharp knive.

You know a dedicated hunter when he has a sharp blade and a dull knife should be a crime.

Planter, I have 3 Buck knives of different sizes..119, 102 and another smaller one they don't make anymore. They're pretty, but dang I can't get them sharp. I gave up when I found the Gator.

A good Gerber, schrade, or buck 3" lock back will do the trick...I have all....they all are different to sharpen, but get a sharpening kit and learn by experience....i honestly always keep a cheap rapala sharpener in my stuff and touch up my knives constantly and hardly ever have ANY issues...

RE: gut knife

David.. You are not kidding about bucks knives being a pain to sharpen. Thats some hard steel. The best knives to sharpen are the older ones. Thay are just a little softer and stain a bit but even with a wetstone you can make them like a razer. I like having a little more carbon in my kitchen knives. A couple of strops on the steel and your right back in it.
