Standing vs. sitting
A friend of mine swears by sittingdown inthe stand while shooting. He practices standing and sitting about 50-50. He likes it because you don't have to worry about noise, movement, ect.. I've never done it just because it's never felt that comfortable to me.
Whoout there does what? What are some of the pros and cons that you have found with both? |
RE: Standing vs. sitting
Depends for me. I do a lot of ground hunting so sometimes everything has to be from the seat. In stand it depends on the tree, If I don't have a lot of cover around me for whatever reason I'll likely be sitting most of the time and plan on standing when the critter's view is blocked.

RE: Standing vs. sitting
I have killed deer, both sitting and standing. When making a shot from the sitting position, it all but forces you to bend at the waist.;)
|
RE: Standing vs. sitting
I probably shoot from a sitting position 90% of the time and always position my stand in a way that will allow me to do so.
If needed I stand for the shot. |
RE: Standing vs. sitting
I've never killed one sitting down....but I hope to this year. I KNOW I move less when I'm sitting v. standing.....but I've never (to my knowledge) been busted trying to get to a standing position to shoot.

RE: Standing vs. sitting
I usually try to stand as much as possible. In the evening hunts, which is when I get to hunt the most, the last hour of light is standing no matter what.
|
RE: Standing vs. sitting
95% of the 50+ animals I have taken have been sitting in the stand. Ihave always felt likeit is less movement when the time comes to get the shot. I also have stands that allow for this, they are designed to be hunted this way. I have a couple of the lightweight jobbies that don't swivel (with the small seat)and I have had to stand a couple of times using them as a shot sitting was not possible.

RE: Standing vs. sitting
If im sitting it means the action is dead.
|
RE: Standing vs. sitting
I usually stand to shoot. I really don't feel comfortable shooting while i'msitting down.
|
RE: Standing vs. sitting
I stand when the time is right, actually I instinctively stand when I see a deer. I've never shot one while sitting.
|
RE: Standing vs. sitting
If I sit for to long it makes my back mad, I like to shoot standing and I can see more when doing so. It's easier for me to look behind me when standing...
|
RE: Standing vs. sitting
I practice standing, sitting kneeling, leaning, basically any way I could ever think about shooting. 100% of the shots I've taken at deer are standing.
|
RE: Standing vs. sitting
I stand to shoot 95 % of the time
|
RE: Standing vs. sitting
If I don't have to stand, I don't. I set my stands up to be able to shoot sitting down, bow or gun. Some times it does not work and I have to stand.

RE: Standing vs. sitting
I sit for a while, stand for a while. I am up and down for my own comfort. I see no need to sit like a statue as if a deer is gonna see me if I have to scratch my butt, LOL. I just don't give deer as much credit for super powers of being able to pick a hunter off like some do here, other than their smell of course. I am like Rob...when I see a deer, I just instinctively stand up and grab my bow (and in fact, my cameraman will stand and grab the camera at the same time usually). I can shoot sitting down, and killed a turkey sitting in a stand once, but IMO, if you purposely sit in your seat with a deer around that you want to shoot, you are severely limiting the area in which you can shoot the deer. Often I end up doing a 180 or more in the stand waiting for the right shot to present.
|
RE: Standing vs. sitting
it all depends for me. I try to bury my stands in cover so there is no way of telling how im going to shoot. Standing, standing on the seat to get higher(dont recommend), sitting, kneeling on the platform. One foot on the stand the other on a tree peg to take advantage of the shot presented, shot a deer last year sitting on the platform with feet dangling over the edge of the loc on stand. Just know your limits and comfort.

RE: Standing vs. sitting
Idon't hunt from a stand much, but if the situation allows, i stand up. I always practice some while sitting just in case i don't get the opportunity to stand.

I answered depends, but have to agree with Tx on the high percentage of shots from a sitting pos. maybe a 75% or more out of maybe 50+ deer. I just don't make a mental decision about it. I can get a better angle somtimes standing. |
RE: Standing vs. sitting
I shoot just the same sitting...taken most of my deer that way
|
RE: Standing vs. sitting
With the length of my bow it is tough to shoot downward and sit. I pretty much have to stand especially for in close shots. But I do practice shooting while at ground level sitting and kneeling.
I'm pretty much 50-50 on stting and standing while in an elevated stand. |
RE: Standing vs. sitting
if the deer is pretty close to your tree,or off to one side or the other it can present problems for a seated shooter. the treestand hunters mantra is "bend at the waist",kind of tough to do while sitting!! can result in the lower bow limb hitting your knee before or at the shot,TROUBLE!!! I agree with ben/pa,stand as long as you can stand it.sit only for short breaks but never during the "golden hour".
|
RE: Standing vs. sitting
I typically sit much more than stand. If I'm in a hang on then I shoot sitting down. Out of a ladder or anything with side rails I stand "when the time is right"...
|
RE: Standing vs. sitting
If I'm standing when a deer comes around, I'll stand. While sitting, I'll stay sitting.
|
RE: Standing vs. sitting
I would have to guess that its due to a lack in practice of shooting while sitting, but i just can't imagine being able to hold my draw comfortably while sitting... Were most of you comfortable sitting and shooting when you first tried it?
