Shoot 'em in the neck!?!?!

Guy cam into the shop today, and we got to shootin the breeze about hunting. He told me that every deer he shoots he goes for the neck first. Now, Ive never heard of doing this, or not doing this, so I couldnt really argue with him about any of the points he was making. He claimed that if the arrow hits the spine, they go right down, if it hits the major artery they go down fast, and as long as you get em in the neck , not the brisket, they cant run as they need to use their neck to run, so you can get an easy follow up shot.
Is this complete crap? Does he have a point? I'm inclined to think that this is complete crap, but again I've never heard of stickin em in the neck.

Witha gun yes. With an arrow too risky. Unless you are Stan Potts.

There's Probably a real good reason you've never heard of doing that.[:@]

There is to many "if"s in there to convince me to change my aim location.

RE: Shoot 'em in the neck!?!?!

He sure sounds convinced, but it's not something I would try. I'll stick with aiming for the lungs. The only "if" with them is "if" I hit them I know the deer will be dead.

RE: Shoot 'em in the neck!?!?!

Anybody purposely aiming for the neck as their intendedtarget should be punched in the sack.......end of story.

(I saw the Stan Potts thing and have mixed feelings toward that shot.......not high percentage but I understand what he was trying to do and that was drive the arrow down into the animals chest cavity. Hard to say what any of us would do at full draw in those same circumstances but aiming at THE NECK, just the neck and the spine or vessels within as your preferred target is beyond dumb.)

last year a guy who hunts by where i live shot a doe in the neck just below the ear with a arrow and never found it.he watched it run 120yards before going into the woods.id hate to wound a deer and not find it.

I really Hope I see the guy again. He did say that anywhere in the neck will disable them from running, which doesnt seem right either.
I guess there is a good possibility he has never even harvested a deer:eek:

I agree with Matt, the dude should be punched in the sack. A rifle would be a different story, my dad and grandad would only shoot them in the neck with a rifle. I would never aim for the neck with archery equipment, that is just plain ol'stupidity right there!!!! Hit that dude in the sack for me too!!!:DThat means hit him twice in the sack!!!;)

Tell you what; Good news is he is not a customer or friend of a customer, so if I see him, and He convinces me that he has actually done this, I'll punch him in the sack for ya. I'm really doubting now that he has ever even hunted.

Is this offer only limited to this idiot? I see people everyday that I firmly believe I could send a sack punch there way from Matt/PA.

If you do punch him in the sack, please video tape it so we can post it as a reminder of what happens to people who wound deer just because they are stupid. I would guess you are right about never harvesting a deer. I have seen deer in all kinds of shape and still running in the woods. An arrow in the neck is not likely to slow them down much.

Alright I`ll be the scapegoat-I shot an 8 pointer in the neck 3 years ago.
I was on the ground and busted, the deer was standing behind a tree looking right at me and the only shot I had was a wide open neck shot.
It ran about 75 yards REAL FAST spraying blood 5 feet up in the trees.
Now I have to go find my old football nutcup.

Yep straight up sack punch is well deserved if you are aiming for the neck. About 5 yrs. ago i shot at a nice buck, arrow clipped a vine i never noticed basically cutting it in half, arrow kicked sideways and hit the deer in the neck, more towards the base in the meaty area, guess what......you guessed it, never found the deer and felt awful about it.

LOL I guess my question is answered. I will not take this man's advice, and I will never try to shoot a deer in the neck for fear of multiple kicks, dropkicks, and fists to the seeds[:@]

Matt / PA; I think we need a sack-kick smiley!

I`m sure I`m not the only one here that has shot a deer in the neck.My grandpa raised my moms family on veni (most of which were shot at night and of course out of season) and he would only shoot a deer in the neck, and granted that was with a rifle but a broadhead makes a much bigger hole.

An old timer once told me, that when you "find yourself in a hole " the best thing you can do is "quit digging".

If you guys would actually practice shooting once in a while, you wouldn't have to worry about hitting a 4 inch target at 20-30 yards...a neck shot will deer every time.

And you son are in a HOLE. I have an open campfire to anyone......... except guys who think a neck shot with a bow is an ethical shot. I just can't stand morons.

Well I don't know about all the sack punching because if it's with a gun then it's a good shot, there is enough shock to put a deer down in it's tracks if you know where to put the bullet..

But... With a bow... Bad idea...

It`s pretty sad that people think they can hit a heart and not a neck shot.
Granted the forgiveness is greater on a missed heart shot but you shouldn`t be missing to begin with.
I`ve seen alot of pics on here of gutshot deer and it sickens me but I don`t complain-to each his own I guess.

JLA. I see your future. I see, I see, miles and miles of tracking only to lose more deer than you harvest. Unless of course your following in familyfootsteps and your BH is an 06 or 30-30. Good luck in your future endeavours. I would have no part.
By the way I have done neck shots with .30-06 and with .50cal ML....... its still not a guarantee. One of these days I should tell you the story of the bobblehead deer. PM me and I will give you the details. [X(]

The first two deer I shot were in the neck with a 30-06. Why? I had noone to teach me how to hunt really and the guy who I borrowed the gun off told me to do so......I NEVER once shot a deer in the neck again after I started reading books and magazines and educating myself. I would NEVER shoot a deer in the neck with a bow.

You can't be serious? If you are, you 100% need to get your butt to a basic Bowhunter Education class to. No joke.

The spinal cord of a deer is about the thickness of your pinky finger. The carotid artery and juglar vein are wayyyy smaller than that.
Do you even know EXACTLY where those "targets" lie within the neck?

My God.

The quit digging comment was pretty accurate it seems.

steelslinger 09-03-2008 06:55 PM

RE: Shoot 'em in the neck!?!?!

It seems to me when a shot is fired, the head and neck are the first to react. With such a small margin for error, I think it would be silly to try it intentionally with a bow. As far as the neck shot with a gun, I have never lost a deer when it was hit in the neck, never had to even track one. I have, however, lost deer or had to track deer shot in the vitals.Have to say I like a neck shot with a rifle.

NY/Al 09-03-2008 07:01 PM

RE: Shoot 'em in the neck!?!?!

The deer i shot last year had an arrow stuck in its neck (not my own).

Need i say more??

You can practice all you want brother but this sport is not archery, its bow hunting, and when your bowHUNTING stuff happens, you may look through a twig and not see it, causing a small deflection, or you just may pull off a bad shot. I know were not all as perfect as you but come on, you owe it to the deer to go for the highest percentage shot.
