Now the second picture may look like a rub, the first I still don't think is a rub. There is no way those branches would have stayed in tact with heavy horn debarking the tree.

I was thinking the same EXACT thing. I have NEVER seen a rub go all the way to the ground either as Rob mentioned previously. It's not impossible, just unlikely.
