Can you hunt deer at night where you are from? Most states have a legal time when the day ends and I have never seen it get VERY dark and still be legal shooting time. Maybe your buddy should come clean with this and do the right thing.

Gottahunt, how ' bout you contribute to the conversation rather than nitpik about the time. That is a non-factor. If you are a hardcore bowhunter, there is more than a time or two when it is GETTING rather dark (how is that...better?) and you think you are seeing things...could be a deer..could be antlers...whatever. Oh yeah, we normally go out around midnight with our night vision goggles...is that wrong? Should we not be doing that?

For the last time, I only want to know how some of you would handle the situation if you were (a) HIM...would you throw the antler on and call it good, or (b) ME, you know he isn' t being completely honest with all of us in regards to this whopper buck.

This is exhausting...starting to think this thread was a massive mistake.

buckfevered, I don' t think it is wrong at all, I do believe it would be the story that you tell that would define you as a hunter ethically and honestly.
rook' s friend had a great story there and it would still be a great story and a great mount if all of the facts were told. In fact I would find it an awsome story. I just don' t believe that the head gear of a legally harvested deer with a bow should define you nor embarass you as a hunter. That' s my .02 worth.

REH , just curious , what would you have done given the axact scenario?

A. picked up the other antler and tossed it in a box
B. picked up antler and returned the buck to it' s original form before the freak accident
C. leave the other antler in the woods and be happy with what you got

I dont know anyone who wouldn' t do " B" !

I dont mean to offend here , but this whole thing sounds as though instead of being happy for your buddy , theres a little jealousy thing going on.;)

If that halfa8pt you had been hunting was a full 8pt when you were hunting him , a full 8pt when you shot him , and then busted the other side off running into a tree after you shot him , I have a feeling you' d have a different screen name. Are you telling me in this scenario you wouldn' t even want the other side? I think it' s probably pretty easy to say " I wouldn' t do that" until it happens to you.

You know what, I agree with you, Rookelkhunter.

What is the point to changing the story? I think it is more interesting the way it actually happened.

It gets old when people start changing the facts to make themselves " look" better. It isn' t much different than fudging scores in 3-D or target if you ask me. [>:]

I wouldn' t say anything...and usually don' t. :D

Jealous? Durrr, I was happy he got a great buck, I just wish he would tell what would be a great story about it only having one antler, and how the other antler stayed with the bush as he ran off. He failed to mention that to our other 30 hunting buddies, hence why I thought it was a little bogus. I will say once more for some of the thicker headed fellas who aren' t reading the previous posts before responding, TO EACH HIS OWN.

And to answer your question bowfanatic, my answer is " A" . I would mount the buck with the one antler, and pull out the other one when I told the story, and go on to tell how CLOSE I was to actually harvesting a 170 class buck!!! Maybe it' s just me, but that sounds like a hell of a good story, a little better than how I traded some old horns for it at a lamp store and then superglued it back on.

I am simply saying this, I truly hope when he shows off that buck mount to the fellas, he also tells the story of how it came to be on his wall with both antlers.

I think the guy wanted others to be happy for him , you are farther away than his 30 or so friends so he told you the truth and just kind of" forgot " to tell them. I' d give him a little friendly rasi' n about it (tease him) dont get serious though. I would also get the deer mounted with the whole head gear attached since it did match , no harm done, but then tell the truth about it , dont lie. Hell I' d be tickeled to shoot a buck of that caliber and then (thank god) I found the other side.
