hanging stands

I put up a couple hand on stands yesterday for the up coming season. well by the time i finished hanging one 18 minutes
had gone by and i was drenched in sweat. How do you guys do it that put up a stand and hunt it that day ? I was thinking of doing this and that is why i timed myself and to do it quietly. what tricks do you use ?

IMO the people who can hang and hunt have some real talent. I know I couldn't do it effectivly. Whenever I hang stands I'm a sweating bulldozer, making noise, and it still takes me a long time to put them up.

yeah it gets frustrating.

some times i cant help myself from punching and cursing the tree...even sometimes throwing the whole damn stand out of the tree. :-o

i say climber stands are the way to go.

I try to put them up all in 1 day. Mainly cause I end up all scratched up and sweatin and am just ready to go home. I don't have any reason to try to put 1 up and hunt it right afterwards. Maybe hang 1 in morning, go home, hunt in the evening.

Mabey because I'm young, but I can hang-on stand with screw in steps (Not cheap crap steps) in about 7-8 minutes. It also depends on the tree, one with good groovy(sp?) bark will make the time take less. Just tie the stand to your belt loop and pull it up. However, all my trees need a little bit of trimming before I can think about hunting them so I dont hang and hunt.

I just bought my first hang on stand and need to put it up this week. I had some difficulty practicing getting it on the tree 5 feet off the ground. So how do you make it easier to put it up 20 feet in the tree? I think I read here once on the boards people using eye hooks for a make-shift pulley system to pull the stand up and hold in place while securing. Anyone try this?

i replaced my chain with a ratchet strap. that makes things alot easier

I was using screw in steps maybe it would go better with climbing sticks ? or maybe I'm just getting to old to try carrying every thing in ,hang it then hunt . I know a few here do it because they said they like being able to hunt on trees you can't get your climber on

I like to use rope and alot out screw in's to get the stand in place then, I too use the ratchet strap. I do not hang then and hunt them the same day. And I have fallen in love with my climber, so much eiser.

It would all depend on location. If it is safetly away from the bed next to a food source, the only option I see is to get in early with a full change of clothes. Hang the set as quietly as possible, cool down and change clothes, spray down, and start hunting. No matter what it sucks! But if the deer u have been watching is good enough you'll find the strength.

I use rapid rails and my stands have a pin system that i hang them off of under the right conditions with minimal trimming 20-30min I have been thinking of getting some spurs to elminate the rails and pegs.

bowtech 360 i hate wearing rubber boots don't make go get them 7-8 min lets be realistic;)

I thought about the spurs but heard they can be dangerous to use

I don't think i would buy any from out of a catalog but rather get a pair from either somebody that uses them daily as in lumberjack or linesman

This is why I sold my LW alpha lock on and climbing sticks.

Ridiculous.

I can use a climber MUCH faster......with MUCH less effort.....and much quieter.

Im a pretty big fixed stand hunter... I have a climber and use it yearly, but My fixed stands are in locations where i feel the most confident.... There are'nt any tree's that can be climbed in these areas.

But I usually have them up before season comes.

I'm with Jeff on this for the most part. I love EVERYTHING about climbers over hang-ons except for two things:

Entry/Exit Quiteness
Having to remove the climber after every hunt

I only ever hunted exclusively out of climbers until this season. I don't want to be bothered with hiking in and out with the climber on my back after every hunt, and I fear leaving the stand at the base of the tree over time will simply alert deer, and leave unecessary scent.

I went to hang on stands this year (and kept my API climber for spur of the moment changes), and I HATED putting them up. I could probably get them up much quicker with a lineman's belt, but it still took much more effort and time. I'm simply hoping that the fact they will allow me to sneak in and up the tree and out of the tree much quieted will outweight the negatives.

The lineman's belt does help ALLOT. Since I'm fairly new to hanging stands, it takes me about 30 minutes.

As for hanging and hunting, I will not do it unless for an evening hunt in colder weather. I do however hang about 4 or 5 before season. (Hung 3 yesterday) I will use these close to bedding areas/transition zones for quick, quiet entry/exit. I love just carrying in my bow and pack. Nothing to make noise. I just climb, pull up the bow and pack, nock an arrow and hunt. Takes all of about 2 minutes.

I do like the all day comfort of my Viper climber and Open-Shot and I will use these exclusively over feeding and doe travel routes during the rut. Note: Only if I see it necessary.

I have both climbers and hang-ons. Up untill this year I've never 'hung and hunted' with the hang-on/climbing sticks but have hunted on the fly several times successfully with the climbers. Normally the climbers just stay on the same/several trees, though.

I recently purchased some rapid rails and lightweight stand that puts the total weight around 23 lbs. and hope to gain a large amount of mobility while still using a hang on stand. I'll probably keep it in the same tree for a while, but could move it fairly quick if need be.

I would think that no matter what your 'preference' is, a person would expand their equipment to include all the possibilities for any given situation----if you can afford it.
I know I have.
Using not just hang ons, ladders, climbing steps, climbing stands, Tree Saddles, screw in steps.
During your 'pre-scouting' you should make notes to what trees and type of stands should be used and switch your equipment accordingly.
Putting ANY TYPE OF STAND UP without using a safety harness/climbing belt is playing with fire and putting your life on the line no matter how old or what kind of shape your in.
But then again I refer to common sense and Darwin's Law of Survival! :)
