2008 Elk Hunting Members - LETS SEE YOUR PICS

OK, elk season starts in some areas within two weeks in Colorado and some states are underway...and its killing me that I have to wait 4 weeks until my boots hit Colorado soil...so how about a thread showing either some of the scenery, past elk hunting groups, camps, or success pictures....

I will start it out, so lets see some of your pics ..

View of the mountain range in the back ground.

I don't have any pictures on this computer and other than 35mm I don't have any on digital but I did scan the bull I took on my only elk hunt.

33 yards buglin down my neck. He ran 50 yards and fell over. I was on all 4's sucking wind!

6 x 5

Lets try and post a pic. Sorry for the bad pics but I was by myself at the time and the two trees were all that was holding him up on about a 40 degree decline. He did not move much until he was quartered. 6X6 and scored 288 7/8

I guess that's enough since you need a mag glass to see them. Once you get a bull down it would be hard to not be addicted.

Can't believe it's next Wednesday morning that we head out again already... Can't wait to see sights like this again!

Me in camp last year... Hope it's more like this than it was the couple days we came back and stripped down to gym shorts
and flip-flops because it was 92 degrees! [:@]

Thanks, I HATE you guys for that!!!!:D I'd just LOVE to be heading out west this year, but $$$ and family keep me home.

Hate to hear that for ya, Doug... but in all honesty, I'm hoping $$ and gas prices will keep a LOT of guys home! ;):)

i have a question for all you elk hunters i never been able to figure out...when you shoot an elk so you quarter it up in the woods or do you drag that hulk out of the woods i think the answer is obvious but i have been wrong before.

I know people who have dragged them out with 4-wheelers (yes, they were from Missouri [8D]) and even some that loaded them up into the back of their truck beds (Yep, Missouri boys again ;)).

I plan on quartering mine. :D

I can completely understand what you're saying. I had no intentions of going this year anyhow, with a 4 and 2yr old around the house, it's just a bit too difficult for the wife for me to leave for 10-12 days. I was planning on a trip to your homestate for WT but my buddy that was gonna go had to back out due to some issues in his family, so we'll see what next year brings.

Greg / MO 08-19-2008 10:33 PM

RE: 2008 Elk Hunting Members

Perhaps, I should rephrase that... I hope everyone gets to go except the guys who were planning on hunting the unit I'll be in! ;)

And I understand the family thing... I'll be leaving a 5-year-old and an 18-month-old at home with Momma. Other women we know try to get her to give me a hard time, but she'll have none of it; she tells them I provide an awesome life for them all year long, and she gets to stay home and be their Mommy 365 days a year, so why should she begrudge me a few weeks here and there for my passion? Like I've said before... I've got an awesome wife.

I'm sure you do as well... Hope things work out for you next year.

I have never shot an elk that has not had to be quartered up. When you see an elk walking around he is huge. When you see him dead weight on the ground he is even bigger. My first I could not beleive how big an elk really was. Depending on how many guys you have around and how close the truck is you may get him loaded full. I have seen many running around town in trucks whole. As I said above I do not know how it is done as I have never had the opportunity to load one whole we have always had to pack them out. Usually takes us about a day and a half to pack them out sometimes. Depending how deep in the backcountry we hunt. And no we don't have horses and 4 wheelers are not allowed in our hunting area. Thank GOD!!!!!

That is what they look like around here during rifle season. Snow always falls after a day or two of rifle season.

4 wheelers are taking over everywhere and It sucks![:@]

I love elk hunting, to me its one of the most challenging animals out there to hunt. Its one of my favorites. I've yet to arrow an elk, I've had some very close calls but didn't work out in the end in a few different instances. Here's a pic of me when I was a sophomore in high school (10 grade). I had won an elk hunt through an organization/club called Bow hunters Of America. It was a guided hunt kind of, they just packed you in and dropped you at one of there camps and would check in every 2 days. We did all of the hunting on our own. We packed in 6 miles with horses, the only elk hunt I've been on that we've used horses, horses are so nice to use.

Yep... all public-land, do-it-yourself stuff... hence the tents behind me -- and the wish for less people to be able to make it out this year due to rising gas prices. ;)

Sclwald,

Two years ago, I think we had snow everyday during the last three weeks of our archery season. It made for some super excellent/quiet hunting! With all the fresh tracks, it became a simple matter of time! I love hunting elk in snow.
