RE: LONE WOLF ALPHA SIT AND CLIMB QUESTION
ORIGINAL: Rob/PA Bowyer It's all personal preference. I feel Ol'man is the best/quietest/easiest use/best packing/most comfortable stand on the market. I sold a Summit to buy a second Ol'man. I garuantee none of you can get up a tree faster or quieter than I can in my Ol'man. ;) :D |
RE: LONE WOLF ALPHA SIT AND CLIMB QUESTION
I agree, Rob. But I remember also climbing a tree not 20yds away from you without hearing EITHER of us making noise.
I'm honestly intrigued by this stand.....and it would be nice to finally find out for myself. I'm assuming I could sell it pretty easily if I didn't like it. I made someone a deal on my last LW I didnt like.:) I'm gonna go sit in one, I think. I actually know no one who uses one (around here). |
RE: LONE WOLF ALPHA SIT AND CLIMB QUESTION
Jeff, I'm inclined to agree with Greg, only because you don't need the best features (light, pack-able, stealthy, ease of set-up) and seem to require it's worst feature (long term comfort). It's fine for 4-6 hours at a shot. If I'm sitting longer thats when I take the much more comfy, sit and climb, model. But it's still not super comfy (I imagine) like these giant padded offerrings I see by others.
Quite Honestly I'm a stander. I usually swing the seat at 90 degrees to the platform and use it as a shelf for binocs, rangefinder etc, and stand against the tree itself. Ifeel I amless silloutted that way and much more alert and still. A simple head turn allows me to look around without my shoulders and body moving. |
RE: LONE WOLF ALPHA SIT AND CLIMB QUESTION
HOnestly, though, GR8.....isn't it about 3lbs. lighter than the one I'm using? NO.....I wouldn't buy one based on that, alone. "Stealthier"? Because it sits closer to the tree? That sounds interesting, really. I'd be for that. Packable? Again....revert to No. 1. I wouldn't buy it for that reason.....for 3/4 mi. or less walks.
The ease of set-up intrigues me. If it's easier than what I'm using.....it's gotta be great. I'll be honest......I don't think I sat for more than 6 hours more than once or twice, last year. And.....I'm a sitter....unless it's prime time (which I'll stand for). I'm more still that way. Like I said....I'm gonna sit in one. I've got a cushy comfy model. I want another climber that I'll use "sometimes". If this one's it....so be it. If not....I love what I'm using....and I'll get another similar model. How long are you guys hikes in.....where this is of so much importance to you?...the weight (3lb) advantage and the "packability")? |
RE: LONE WOLF ALPHA SIT AND CLIMB QUESTION
ORIGINAL: GMMAT Now you have me even MORE intrigued. Here I am ready to pull the trigger (CC in hand) and you tell me that. Why not me? I HATED the LW Alpha lock on. HATED it. But....I hear the sit and climb has come a LONG, LONG ways in the comfort dept. "It's for "more hardcore" hunters......but Jeff....knowing your likes over the years.....I'll be surprised if you like it????" Damn...I don't know how to take that!....:D How long are you guys hikes in.....where this is of so much importance to you?...the weight (3lb) advantage and the "packability")? |
RE: LONE WOLF ALPHA SIT AND CLIMB QUESTION
Gary I climb EVERY HUNT. I become one with my climber.:)
This is very important to me (choosing the right one). You guys are likely carrying heavier gear (for the colder temps), for sure. We're all carrying bows, though....I would think. I went, today and marked my trails on the new property to my possible opening morning stands.....and cleared a little more small limbs for easy egress. I can get to my spots pretty easily, now. To be honest.......being able to sit and shoot is the thing that intrigues me MOST about this stand. |
RE: LONE WOLF ALPHA SIT AND CLIMB QUESTION
No, the comment wasn't intended as a slight against Jeff; it was moreso along the lines of what Bob mentioned, as well as I don't believe he stayed with his Lone Wolf hang-on very long before quickly giving up on it.
And that goes along with what I was about to say in regards to your question about ease of setup. If you'll notice in my first post on the subject, I never mentioned ease of setup; I mentioned quiet setup. Now... can I set it up easily after a season under my belt? Absolutely. But again -- in the spirit of an honest comparison -- the Summit would probably have the edge in pure ease of setup, just not quiet setup -- at least for the first few initial setups and maybe even a bit more than that. That's why I saidyou probably wouldn't like it; I just doubt you're looking for the things in a stand thatfalls under the LW's strong points. I think your needs/wants are more geared toward your Summit... andif not your Viper, perhaps an Open Shot. I may be wrong, though... and that's why you'vegot to put it through its paces yourself. |
RE: LONE WOLF ALPHA SIT AND CLIMB QUESTION
I've climbed likely 120 times in the last 3 years......lol. So yeah....I understand about learning your climber and developing a "system".
When you speak of the Alpha set I had...let's be totally honest. I wanted something to use for a same day set. It took me TWO times using it to figure out it WASN'T the LW alpha and climbing sticks OVER a summit Viper. Plato, I am not.....but that decisiondidn't require such philosophy. If there's something to this LW climber ('for me";)).....I'm smart enough to figure it out.....OR....write it off as a lesson learned.;) |
RE: LONE WOLF ALPHA SIT AND CLIMB QUESTION
Wow, I am surprised at all the negative comments about the Sit and Climb. It seems most of them are coming from guys that have never tried one or tried one once or twice, or their brothers cousins nephew had one, etc. At any rate, I will give my input incase there is someone reading that is interested in a Sit and Climb and not just giving advice about something they haven't used.
I noticed a few mentions of the "looks" of the Lone Wolf. The guy that founded Lone Wolf, designed them how he thought a stand should be-quiet, strong, stable, portability, etc. They are made to do all of these and do them well, if your buying or even considering buying a stand on "looks" then you are not serious about hunting. Also, the mention of the seat being to small, the guy that founded Lone Wolf and uses them exclusively is a big guy, much bigger than those that say they are to small. I'm 6'4 230 lbs, I could be 275 lbs and still not be to big for the Sit and Climb. The platform is a good size too. Someone mentioned how are they better than the Summit Openshot? Huh? It isn't even a competition, I bought an Openshot last summer, I did use it and it was alright of a stand. Sure you can kill a deer out of it, but it was not even half the stand my LW is. It packs so much better, super quiet, very secure in the tree, this thing is solid on every type of tree that I can find around here. Another mention was the seat coming loose when you stand for a shot. I will say that if the seat is coming undone and falling or even loosening when your clothing catches the front of it, then you are using it wrong. Period. If you lock the two straps down, one on each side, then there is no way the seat can move. If the straps are tight then the stand is solid. There is a reason this stand cost so much. And its worth every penny to a dedicated bowhunter, no it doesn't make you a higher class bowhunter or anything like that, but just because some idiot has one and can't kill a deer doesn't mean the stand is junk. The first couple of times I used mine I thought I had made a mistake, but after 4 or 5 times I "learned" this stand and I LOVE it more and more each time I use it. BTW, I did buy the new seat this summer for mine. I think it will be more comfy although the one I had wasn't bad at all, I hunted all day 11 days in a row last year with it and was mostly satisfied. Had to stretch a little every couple hours. Look if you dont want one, then don't buy one. But you should never bash a product you haven't tried yourself. |
RE: LONE WOLF ALPHA SIT AND CLIMB QUESTION
Most everyone already answered you questions. I think you will be pushing it on size. According to the last post I must stand up wrong. The buckles of my safety harness hit the side rails unless I make a conscience effort to look down and see how to get them to clear. Even if the bottom doesn't come loose it makes noise when plastic hits aluminum.
When it gets cold and I wear winter or bulkier clothes I have to put my hands over the buckles from my harness, they don't fit with bulkier clothes. The bigger guys having no trouble with the size of the seat must have a bigger seat than I do. |
