Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
I know none of you take a tape measure and find out how far up you are, but what would you say the highest youve hunted from is? Im not scared of heights to say the least, I'll go as high as needed, which brings reason for the thread.
I was scouting today and I picked my tree, but in order for me to be "over" the undergrowth.... I'll probably need to be APX 30ft. up. thats pretty high IMO. But it's the perfect tree... would you go 30ft.+ up to have a good stand location? |
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
11,500ft
|
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
ORIGINAL: OHbowhntr 11,500ft ![]() ;):D I would say 20 ft. give or take a ft. |
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
I believe 25' was the highest I ever set a stand and the pucker factor was up there.[:@]
Being high is good but you don't need to get too high for a good shot angle.;) |
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
Seriously though, I don't like to hunt much above 20', mostly because of the angles and the fact that most of the places I hunt, there is a point where getting too high increases the amount of "potential deflectors" I have in my way.

RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
No I don't think I would go that high, since the trees on the property I hunt, won't allow it!!:D[>:] But If I were able to and that's what it would take. Yes.
The highest I have ever hunted out of a tree, is approx 6 ft. I'm planning on going to about 20 where trees permit. |

RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
15ft is as high as I go.

RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
You would be fine Aaron with your angle at 20 yards. You get under 15 yards and it might be a different story then. The highest I've hunted from was about 25' or so. I shot 2 different doe's from this stand. One was at 21 yards (angle was perfect) the other was at 15 yards (angle was perfect as well). Its nice to get high up there but I'd rather say around 20' instead, I feel a little more comfortable.;) Be careful If you do it!!

RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
I staked out a pefect tree in a creek bottom where it gradually starts to ridgeline about 80 ft up on two directions. I bought two 16' climbing sticks. After the firts was us, and I was on top of that one placing the second one, I decided on only putting hlf on the top (8'). Thats pretty damn high, plus the hieght put me at a great cover spot.
The thermals are what bothers me, especially where Im going to hunt this stand. When Im standing on my stand, it appears that Im at about eye level with the start of the ridgeline, but if Im not high enough at that point, forgetaboutit. I actually used the other 8 ft section on an old hanger today. 4 poplars were growing together and if you stood in the middle, you could rech up and start the stick about 6 '. With the help of some screw in steps, I got the stand at about 14-15 feet. I dont want to go higher because its their escape from bedding and Im in aout the tallest tree. I almost settledfor about 12 ft. |
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
High as a kite, that's my limit. :D I don't like to go above 25- 27, 18-22 is better.
|
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
I usually hunt between 25-35 feet. I don't like going that high, but because of the terrain and the type of trees present, to be any lower and the deer would pick you off. The highest stand I have this year is about 30 feet to the platform. Even that high I don't feel like I am high enough.
In order to get a better idea of what I am talking about, you can see pictures of one of my stands from last fall below. It is my second highest at 30 feet (the highest is one addition 4-foot ladder section). http://s514.photobucket.com/albums/t...av_album_album |
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
My stands are usually all right at 15 feet. The woods are just too think to go higher (and thats as high as my climbing sticks go ;)). I did hang a stand this year that would be about 20, and the highest i ever hunted was with my cousin. He had screw steps going up about 35 feet and had 2 hang on stands on opposite sides of the trees. Pretty scary for a 16 year old at 5 in the morning to navigate ;)We did get to see a pack of coyotes chasing does....but thats another story :D

RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
Heigest I have ever gone up for hunting was 23/24 feet up and Ihave beenhunting out of it for the last 2 weeks of bear season!
|
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
Ive got a lot of 15' ladder stands and a couple with 4' add on sections. I usally gun hunt out of them, and I put blinds on them so you can get away with some movement. When I use my climber Im usaully about 20-25 ft. up.
|
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
Funny you should ask! One morning I was climbing well before daylight. I got to where I thought I wanted an settled in, daylight came around a little while later. Well, I must have rested good that night because I put my rangefinder on ft. instead of yards. According to the rangefinder it was 37 ft. I usually hunt around 17 to 28ft depends on cover.
|
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
I've killed Bighorn Sheepand Mt. Goats above 13,500 feet. I hope to someday kill a sheep in Asia above 17,000 feet (I pray it's sooner than later). As far as white-tailed deer are concerned, I've killed them from minus four to 24 feet.
|
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
25 feet but i usually go to about 20 feet
|
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
25 feet is about my max. I don't like high places all that much myself. I use a climber mostly. Seems like every year I go through the same break in period. Early in the year after having not sat in a stand for months I'm not comfortable much above 16-18 feet. As the season goes on and the vegetation dies off I start getting higher. I'm usually 18-22 feet. I seek cover from tree limbs, pulling in small under brush trees with a rope and tie them off to my stand or tree. Sometimes I work bushy limbs into the stand and climb up with them for cover.

RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
i had a forest gump moment one morning i my climber.. " i jus kep climbin an climbin"... when i stop my 20 foot bow rope was prolly another 15-18 feet off the ground.. that lasted about 20 minutes an i thought to my self this is nuts.. im goin down a bit.......

RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
Dave.....
The fact that you were dragging a bow didn't clue you in?:D Aaron.....I've hunted from 15' and I've hunted from 25'. I can tell you that "I" would be trimming some underbrush. 30' is getting too high for my shot angle preference. I'm not so concerned about your safety...if you're staying tied off (;)) the entire time......but I can attest to some steep angles and it not being "ideal". "IF" you're looking at ducking inside a field edge.....and you think your shot opportunity is going to be in the 18+ yd range.....I might consider it. For "normal" hunting situations, though.....I just think you're asking for trouble (with the angles, only). My .02.....just be safe. |
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
I was in IL on a guided hunt a few years back. They put me in a stand that was pushing 30'. I couldn't have stood up and drawn on a deer if I wanted to!!!!!
I usually am 15-20' high, depending on the area... occasionally a bit higher w/ my climber... |
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
15-18 is max for me also. Granted, going higher may help in the scent and being seen scenerio. However, the benefits of a good shot angle outweigh them to me anyway. In other words, I'd rather be busted then not have a good shot angle. Good cover is essential. Keep in mind that I won't shoot past 25 yards.

RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
35 was the highest. Big oak tree.
|
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
I guess what "I" was eluding to Bob.....it the precise-ness (is that a word?:D) required to shoot from those angles. I'm just not comfortable with my abilities with traditional equipment to knowingly reduce the vitals area by adding in a lot of angle. With my compound.....I'm comfortable at 23'. I won't go nearly that high with the longbow.
I've seen your groups, though. Respect.;) |
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
In my neck of the woods its hard to get higher than 18 feet without running into limb probloms with a climber.
In a 2x4 built stand it`s usually 15 feet |
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
Usually 20-22 for bow, 20-30 depending on the terrain with my rifle.
|
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
I sat about 35 feet high in a tree last year to offset some terrain dips....even though I was only about 25 feet off the ground, I was 35 feet high in the tree. I will not do that again...too high.
|
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
25' and I was nervous....shot a doe though....
I like 16-18' much better! |
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
i have a 25ft rope to pull my gear up and ive climbed with the bow and gear hanging from the rope a few times...didnt like it....but it was the only climbable tree in the area i wanted to hunt and it was WIDE open...heck, i think i was even dumb enough to adjust the top portion of my stand 1 notch tighter to level the stand because the tree thinned out...to top it off that tree was on the edge of the hill...about 200-300ft down before it was flat again...awesome view...because of the wind and location that was the only tree i had available..
usually right around 18-22ft |
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
When I was filming we hunted the Bottoms (http://www.gallatinbottoms.com/) pretty often. Those boys love to go high, real high. The first time I filmed there, I told my hunter I was not going up, it was just too high. Well since he was a way bigger boy than myself and threated to beat me and field dress me, I went up. I hunt from 30 foot a lot and I know this was another 15 foot higher at least. I always hated going down there just because I knew how high they were going to have us.

20-25ft is good for me!!

RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
we have a stand where there is a bunch of 25-30' trees in front of it blocking the view into the field(which is where we see the most deer) but the tree we built the stand in is giant! we measured this stand to see just how tall it was and to the floor of the stand its 38. 5 feet....................................just to add, we only gun hunt out of this stand, we would never dream of bowhunting it lol
|
RE: Whats the highest youve ever hunted from..?
I am not affraid of heights either, but the highest I will hunt is 20 feet in my climber. I hunted a tree laster year at 7ft because and got within 10 yrds of a 3 yr old. Cover is your key not height.
