RE: how much meat
true we ususly eat about 10 or 20 bucks in meat a day because theres five of us. depending on what we eat
ORIGINAL: GMMAT If a Doe is bread in mid Nov she will give birth somewhere in the first week of June (201 day gestation period). By the day it was concived in mid Nov a fawn will be almost 5 1/2 months old and weigh about a whopping 40 lbs dressed (seen them as light as 32 lbs at the end of Nov). So lets cut off the legs above the knees, skin it, cut the head off and debone the meat. In reality you have about enough to feed a family of 5, BBQ sandwiches for 2 days, if your lucky. What a win-win! Buy that man a beer!:) |
RE: how much meat
You can't factor in cost, unless you ignore equipment. In my mind, the cost is already spent (I butcher my own), whether I shoot one or not. I wouldn't pay $80 for a butcher for a 40 lb deer, to get 20 lbs of meat, however I have and possibly will again, shot a small deer and cut it up myself. YOu don' tget tons of meals, but the few you do get sure are tasty!
If you are going to enjoy the memory of that small deer, then go for it, if you are going to hide it and be embarrassed, then don't shoot it. |
RE: how much meat
I think it's a shame to kill a fawn. I will never do it. I hunt mostly state land in maryland and I watch people kill anything that moves in the woods. It drives me crazy. Harvest the adult deer and give the little ones a chance to get big enough to make it worth havesting them. If you shoot fawns, it makes our sport and way of life look worse to the people that try to take our rights away and only gives them more fuel for the fire.....

RE: how much meat
I shoot them because they're another mouth....eating up the available food that the habitat I hunt will only produce so much of. Each day...on average...a whitetail deer is going to consume 4 lbs of food.
I shoot them because they are PROLIFIC breeders. A "this year's fawn" (in our mild climate) stands a good chance of being bred. The sooner they're removed from the herd.....the less food they consume from that day forward....and it's a 100% chance they won't be breeding if they're frozen in someone's freezer. I shoot them (doe fawns)because they need killing (here). I don't shoot them for their "trophy status" (hardly qualify in my book). I don't "target" doe fawns, per se....but will shoot one if presented an ethical shot. Ignorance as to why doe fawns are taken, in many instances,is (obviously) rampant. Oh yeah....they are really cute beside brown rice, also.;) |

No hes not talking about the choice to take a fawn or not, he wants to know how much meat a fawn will get him. Plus, there has been like 3 other posts about fawn harvest, look on page 2 or 3 and see. NO PWN intended. |
