Spinoff of taking a fawn...

Have you ever shot a deer legally and then not told anyone cause you did not want to hear what they had to say? You know small buck, small doe, babies...maybe cause your buddies trophy hunt and you really wanted to shoot a deer but after you did it you were like man I don't want to tell them about it they will ride me hard. Me I never shot a deer and not been super happy and excited that a plan came togethor. I always call my wife and kids as soon as I shoot one. And normally my brother being he lives next to where I hunt so he brings the truck![&:]

Any animal taken with a bow is a trophy. So Im telling the story of how I got every deer I will shoot.

I agree with 360 any deer is a trophy in my book. IfI was that worried about what other people thought then I would have to rethink the way I do things. The only person I have to satisfy is me no body else.

I shoot what I want, when I want and could give a rats ass what anyone else thinks or says! If someone hunts to impress others or to get an atta boy, they sure are missing out, or maybe they should take up golf!;):D

I feel bad for people that cant look at every animal they take and not view it as a trophy. But I can understand if your definition of trophy is different.

Every deer is NOT a trophy to me. Some are just does taken to eat. I shoot them & eat them. I am not proud nor ashamed. I've shot fawns, I don't hide it, but I certainly ain't going to flaunt it either.

No offense intended, Bowtech.....but your area may be just a tad different than mine. WHY we allhunt is extremely personal. Our goals will all be different. HOW I hunt is quite different from how I WISH I could hunt.

That may make sense to you, one day.

I respect whatever your goals are, im just stating that nobody should feel regret about taking an animal with a bow. Because when I start hunting to fill the freezer I probaly wont view it as a trophy but it will still be one.

10-4 Joe!!

My 1st 4 deer were fawns. Everyone would of guessed I just shot a world record for as excited and as proud as I was with them fawns. I was 13 years old when I shot my 1st deer, it was a doe fawn. When I shot it that evening I thought it was a doe. When we found it that night I was wrong, it was a fawn and it didn't change a thing on how I felt about it. That same night one of the guys that came with us to track it told his kid when we found my fawn that you can do better then that on your 1st deer, fawns are too easy! My dad damn near flew off the handle on this guy when he said that in front of us all to his son. Some people will never get it! This guy no longer is a friend of the family. My dad don't put up with this stuff and neither do I. A deer is a deer and as long as the person doing the shooting is proud thats what matters.

My 1st mount on the wall is of my doe fawn. I'm not bashful one bit about telling people what it is. I'm proud of that deer. My dad was proud of it too and thats why he said its going on the wall.

How many people would have a fawn mounted on the wall for everyone to see? Not many I'm guessing because there to chicken **** on what other people would think and say. Grow some balls and shoot what you want and tell the whole world about it because your proud of your animal. If you can't do that, you've got problems.

and i had some nice pics taken in the woods and the whole 9yds...wished it wasnt a BB but thats how it panned out....cant take it back now...beautiful tanned hide and some of the best venison there is...

i'll never care what anyone thinks of what i kill...my choice....and wont bash anyone for what they killed so long as its legal....

RE: Spinoff of taking a fawn...

I think most have to agree that there is a difference between someone’s first (or lower numbered) bowkill & their 50th. Especially in the amount of excitement they feel. This HAS to be fairly common. My 3rd or 4th bowkill (10th deer overall) was a fawn doe and I was so giddy the guy at the butcher shop though it was my first deer ever. There is nothing wrong with that, and I have no regrets feeling as happy as I was. BUT, if I walk out and shoot a doe this fall, even a big one, I am not going to be 1/10th as giddy over it as I was for that fawn. Now let me whack it with my trad bow, and you’ll see a big surge of giddiness.

Another thing to realize and (this is more out of politeness) is that what may be old hat to some, is pure joy to others.

To anwser the question, no I have never killed a deer and then not said something because I was assamed. As for the little debate over what a trophy is.....I wish some of the new hunters could go back to when hunting was not like it is now. Growing up in Northern Indiana, you were very lucky to be able to kill a deer with a bow, any deer. Hell, seeing a buck as an accomplishment of it's own. Today, States are managing the herd, hunting are managing the herd. This is the golden time of hunting. So I can see how some would see taking a doe today as not being a trophy, but back in the day, hell yes it was trophy.

Like Rybo said, I'll shoot a fawn as long as i have a tag but i am never going to flaunt it. I don't shoot doe to be proud of them just to eat them. I continually shoot fawns but with 12+ bow kills to my credit i don't find any challenge in it - its all about the meat.

Pa....I feel like you do about the fawns, really....and we have about the same number of bowkills.....but I gotta be honest with ya....lol...

Maybe it's still my relative "new-ness" with bowhunting....but I ABSOLUTELY view a big 'ol doe as a "trophy".:) I'm proud of every one of 'em (although I'm not REAL good at killing them!). Like Rybo said.....the "giddiness" will reach new levels if I'm lucky enough to get one with my longbow.

Heck....the does around here get names just like the bucks!:D Rob remembers hunting when "Cadillac" came in with her two fawns....and I recall mentioning "Horse-head" in here last fall, too. She's a brute for these parts.

In '06....I heard a big commotion coming through the woods...and along came an ashen grey old doe. She was beautiful! She was really worthy of a full body mount, to me (now:eek:). I didn't know what I was looking at, THEN. I just knew I heard another deer chasing her.....which turned out to be a little 5 pointer (that later cost me a chance at a buck[:@]a few days later. I was paying attention to him and not the total area). That one worked out well, too...but I'd SURELY consdier taking her an "accomplishment" and I'd consider her a HUGE "trophy".

Funny how everyone sees things (even individual deer) differently. I love that. Nobody' s wrong.

Jeff,

I shot a bunch with a bow (big and small) and tons more with a rifle. When i was young it was a huge deal to me - you would swear i just stuck deerzilla with how excited i was. After about the tenth one it just started getting easy to kill doe - almost to easy. I am fortunate that i hunt some places in PA that are still littered with doe and could easilyget multiple shot oppurtunities in one sitting. After so many of them, it just became pointing and shooting not hunting. Maybe im just changing phases as a hunter and its no longer about filling tagsbut finding more of a challenge - i don't know but you are right we all do it for different reasons and nobody is wrong.

I know this feeling, kind of...

It's never been about the numbers with me. I just have too many does....and I know it's the right thing to do (killing them). I posted up a few last year....and didn't post some (photos). Everyone's situation is different. I need to kill 2 for "us". I need to kill 2 for my neighbors (or someone hunting with me, does). I have a family that will take as many as I can give them. I need to thin the doe population.

So it'll be numbers coming from my woods for quite a while.

If I could hunt the way I preferred......I'd likely kill 2-3 deer a season.

I'm rooting for EVERYONE comingto my woods to hunt, this fall.:) I'd love to do more dragging and less shooting.
