So you're playing the wind...
You see a buck in the distance......and you grunt to him.
Now he's gonna do what? Same scenario......except you've either blind grunted one up.....OR...you've rattled one in. He's gonna do what? Just a question.....WHY would anyone who feels like playing the wind is SO important......employ a grunt tube/rattling antlersin their arsenal.....IF they weren't going to take EVERY OTHER scent control measure possible? |
RE: So you're playing the wind...
Well would you rather the buck just walk away out of your life, or come back in and possible get a shot whether he circles downwind or not? Seems to me that early season/unpressured and sometimes ruttingbucks do not always circle downwind.
|
RE: So you're playing the wind...
I'm saying "why take chances?".
|
RE: So you're playing the wind...
Form my rattling experience, they don't always go downwind. It helpsif you have a barrier such as a pond or really think fence row blocking them from getting downwindof you.
|
RE: So you're playing the wind...
Well I generally only call during the rut, at that time the bucks mind is where mine usually is;)
It is a possibility you can get away with calling because they are more interested in a) does in estrous and b) bucks infringing on their territory. Maybe. But then again, maybe not. I'll play the wind, and take my chances. |

I don't disagree with either of you, actually. What seems SO foreign to one man.....is an acceptable degree of "taking a chance" to another.
It works both ways.;) |
RE: So you're playing the wind...
I see what your saying Jeff,
The fact that he could circle downwind and bust you and be "gone" for the rest of the season. I guess its all depends on how much you want to risk. |

RE: So you're playing the wind...
Depends on how you look at it. If hes a hog I'm gonna take that chance every time. You only live once and its only bowhunting. [:-] |
RE: So you're playing the wind...
I only hunt the wind no scent control at all. Not that there is anything wrong with it nor do I have a problem with anyone that uses it. It just I choose not to waste my money on it. What ever happens happens. Maybe one day I will take the plunge and buy a suit and cover scents but at this point I see it as a waste because deer can smell alot more than one scent at a time and distinguish between the two or more scents they smell. I read an article that stated the number of scent pallets that a deer had and it was alot more than any dog they had listed.
|
RE: So you're playing the wind...
I'm sorry I don't see the point to the question. This person that hunts the wind is there to get a deer right? Or is he just there to watch a deer?
If he is there to take a deer then why would he not do something to get the deer within range? |
RE: So you're playing the wind...
I've grunted in and killed 3 that did not circle down wind. In fact, every buck that i have had come into the grunt did not circle downwind.

All this (and your results)proves is......nothing's a given. I think we need to use our noggins more....and the "textbook" stuff, less. "Take a chance", these guys said. I agree.;) |
RE: So you're playing the wind...
Jeff,
I agree, results vary from day to day and from region to region..... I applaud you guys that are serious scent "freaks"... I'm just too lazy to fool with it... On 95% of my hunts i will be sweating by the time I get setup and it seems futile in my circumstances....I tried it for one season and didn't notice any difference in my deer sightings or the amount of times I was winded..... When i play the wind and still grunt to a buck its b/c he is not coming my way and its a last ditch effort... If he winds me, oh well, atleast I gave myself a chance. |

RE: So you're playing the wind...
If I am rattling or grunting once a buck is spotted I am silent. He knows where it's coming from and I am not gonna give away my location. As for if I see one and I was not calling I may hit the can once or twice but thats it! I then let them go!

Pre rut and post rut you should know where your bucks are coming from. During the rut one never knows where there coming from. Its a good thing there heads are up there ass then.;) |
RE: So you're playing the wind...
I never had any luck rattling crap in NC
As far as grunting if the deer appears and starts to head away, then I will grunt, I also have employed blind calling with a little positive results So yeah I'm taking a chance |

What do you have to loose if you do not? But we've got some hard-asses that profess to taking NO CHANCES.....yet they admit to grunting/rattling.....and NOT being as clean as they can be (all the while.....they HAVE to know that a smart whitetail will try to get downwind of them). It just doesn't make sense. My question was somewhat loaded. See you and I agree.;) |

RE: So you're playing the wind...
Dang, just take a bath and hunt the dang wind.
|
RE: So you're playing the wind...
Its more of a scent control and methodology question. If you KNOW a mature buck is going to head downwind when you call and you're going to call- why not take scent control measures ? I feel the same way. Take every scent control measure available. Showers, deodorants, scent blocker, spray, get dressed at your farm and spray down well. Then, working the wind would be evenmore effective. Now what;s wrong with pointing this out? Doesn't it make common sense? |

RE: So you're playing the wind...
Sorry. DUMB scenario. If a deer thinks a call is ligit, they'll come to it. No reason to circle around to it unless they have reservations. In that case, buy a better call. I've never heard of deer winding each other. Might happen, I've just never heard of it. Buck grunts? Why would anybody use a grunt other than the rut? It's sole purpose, please correct me, is to bring bigger bucks in that want to chase out the youngsters after their does. You hit adeep buck grunt and every young buck within a quartermile is running for cover. My experience anyway.

RE: So you're playing the wind...
Jeff
I will not rattle or grunt. The last thing I want is a buck looking for trouble and findingme while hunting on the ground. I've played around with it in the past. The bucks usually walks straight in or circles behind with the latter happening most of the time. I've alwayshad an alert buck, no shot and a bust in the end. Big waste of time. I will use the " Can " but more as a last chance. These instances consist of... 1. If it is the last night I can hunt the areafor quiteawhile. 2.The last couple days before our General Season starts. 3. Wind will switch and not blow in this direction for a few days not letting me hunt this area. Keep in mind... I never hunt the exact spot twice unless a great deal of time passessince I know I have contaminated that spot by hunting on the ground.I will hunt the same area but I willmove 50 -100 yards or more if I hunt it a couple days in a row. Who knows if they have found myambushspot while I am not there so I like to keep them guessing so to speak if they have. TheCAN usually doesn't have them coming in expecting trouble as rattling or grunting at them. Idon't over use it either but use it sparingly. I usuallyuse it with a buck in sight so I can read him whether to or not to use it after the 1st time. Most of the time I just use it once. Tim |
RE: So you're playing the wind...
One more thing...
I have thought abouttrying a decoy soI can rattle or grunt. Giving them something to focus on instead of searching formy spot while on high alert. That would be interesting and probablymore do-able with huntingfrom the ground. Tim |
