trespassers

i have a open field surrounded by trees that i hunt and have never had troubles with trespassers. but now this year i put in food plots and salt licks. i have a bunch of Deleted for skirting profanity filter using it as a racetrack for the four wheelers. they do not go on it during the day either- only at night. i put up "posted" signs and signed them . what else can i do. i put up a trail cam ... but no pics yet. any help?????!!!

Symbols $ are not acceptable to skirt the profanity filter. Next time the thread will be deleted.

RE: trespassers

Put some razor wire across their track and in the morning collect your
trophies (4 wheelers), your on your own with the bodies.

or you could have the sherrif come out and take a look.

Run a single strand across one of their runs, they'll get the message. They're scumbags with no reguard for other peoples property, plain and simple.[:'(][>:][>:]

RE: trespassers

If there is a definite trail there using dig a trench about 3 foot deep and at least that wide cover it with small limbs leaves etc ! It will get there attention trust me ;);). When it comes to poachers and trespassersyou have tomake them a believer sometimes. The landowner i hunt with removed two men from his property that he caught the year before and warned them then not to return well they returned last year and he ******ed them with a double barrel shotgun he called the sheriff as he walked themto the his houseand they were arrested on the spot . Needless to say word has gotten around and no one wants to chance it ! You invest lot's of time and money into your hunting you sometimes got to do whatever it takes to get the word out to stay off private land ! Im not saying kill somebody by any means !

RE: trespassers

Just so you know, razor wire or evena single strand across one of the runs can end you up in jail and getting sued. I highly recommend sitting at where they are entering the field in the evening and intercepting them. If they are in a truck, take down the license plate number. A nice talk about trespassing and respecting someone else's property. End the conversation with further incidents will involve law enforcement. If it happens again, find a secretive spot and call law enforcement as soon as they show up. Get photos & when law enforcement shows up, ask for a copy of the police report to follow up with civil action afterwards.

Not to beat a dead horse but taking any type of "self-help" measures (barbed wire, trenches, spike strips, etc) makes YOU the bad guy, legally speaking.Your best bet would be to get the local authorities involved and let them take care of it. A trail cam would be a good idea and could def give you some good evidence but i would be worried about the trespassers stealing them since they obviously have no respect for other people's property.

me and a buddy just had to put a new lock on one of our hunting spots today because 4 wheeler riders beat the other one off... pisses me off... cause this place has less than 1/4 a mile of 4 wheeler trails... just to the cabin and to where we park to ride... jeez... people have no respect... but i wouldnt do anything that could hurt the people... the justice system can be screwed up at times and you would definately be the bad guy in that one..

You are quite right about this. I was just being sarcastic about the single strand. But I was very serious about them being scumbags with no respect for other peoples property.;)

The problem with leaving it up to the police is let's be real how hard are they gonna try to catch the guys are they gonna stake out your lease to catch them ! I think not ! Granted the razor wire is a bit much but what are they gonna say i was trespassing on this posted land riding my fourwheeler along when i hit a ditch and say broke there arm ! Or sue you for flatening there tires How would they prove beyond a doubt you did it ! I'm just throwing this out there because im curious ! Im sorry i don't have much pity on tresspassers especially when the land is fenced and posted they are the guilty ones. It just seems to me the we are protecting the criminals too much ! I'm not trying to be an ass just my opinon !

Yeah just dig a hole that you are going to "plant a tree in"

Well they are doing it at night so I would get them with one of these to blind them first.
http://www.hammacher.com/publish/734...cm_cat=1414665

Once they are blinded and disorientated I'd grab the keys to their rigs and call the police. For good measure you could sprinkle some crack on them and claim they're drug runners;)

RE: trespassers

You could also fabricate some of those spike strips they have at the rent a car pickup and drop off area that flattens your tires of you drive the wrong direction. That would leave you with a few useless four wheelers to pillage.

RE: trespassers

I have had a huge problem with four-wheelers over the past 5 years. This spring was the worst. I was coming out after a turkey hunt one day, just locked the gate and was driving to the main road, when a whole gang of about 15 four wheelers came bustin down the road towards me. I couldn't get out and fight 20 guys, so I just told em this was private property and to not ride here, which I've told em bunches of times. I can't gate off my entire property b/c the power company has to have access to the power lines, and they cut our lock a few years back to get in. We moved the gate back and now the riders can easily go down the power line and up a back road. We're working with the club next to us and the power company to put up one single gate with three locks for us all. I would keep my other gate up still. They were going around our gate for a long time, until I put up 3 strands of barbed wire with fluorescent flagging tape all over it (legalities). Then to deter them even more we cemented 4 lead pipes in the ground past the barbed wire so they wouldn't even be able to get by if they did cut the wire. Also found their exit path at the other end of the property, and I really had to search good to find it. They were being slick and coming in from another road, down the river's edge through the thick stuff and riding allll on my place. I was able to find this path and set 3 posts in the ground with a cable and pvc pipe nailed up between the posts with posted signs all over it. They haven't been back since. If they do, the sheriff and wardens have already been notified about this from me and the club next to us, so we should be able to keep em out, for now. All the advice I can give you, try to block off every single way they can get in. If you think you've found all the ways they're gettin into your place, look again, and then look once more, because trespassers are slick buddy.

RE: trespassers

Also, no using nails and traps and what-not. Like they said, you'll get sued nowadays for that crap, or worse it might piss em off enough to hide in the woods one morning and beat the piss out of you or end up killin you. I piled logs up about 5 feet high before I put the posts in, and they cleaned those boogers up to get by. Put up three strands of wire with no posts, they cut the wire. Trespassers will do just about anything, be careful and good luck with the punks.

RE: trespassers

If they are causing damage to the fields they can be charged with criminal damage to private property, and of which can be as serious as a felony charge. We had a jackass neighbor come on to our land last year and start cutting brush along our fence not to mention cuto down some trees as well and took out some steel fence posts and barbwire, then he cut a few rows of his trees to cut 16 foot shooting lanes right towards our property, and the lanes are straight in line with our machine shed, barn, house, and then cousins house, then neighbors house(s), the highway, and a tavern. I want to see if he decides to cut anythign else down on ourside this year cause if he does hell be going to jail.

RE: trespassers

I like the 1x6 idea. Put it about a 1/2 inch on of those trailers with a little dirt over it. They flatten their tires once, they'll be gone. What can they do, tell you to pay for it when they were trespassing. They'll find a new track real quick. Plus, I don't know how many police are in your area, but if itsa low amount, the odds of them catching them while they are trespassing are going to be tough. That trail camera ideo would be great, but unless they are moving at a crawl, I don't think your going to get a good image.

I think it'd be funny to go sneaky on them. Find a trail that they are Definately using. camoflauge yourself and lay beside it. When they come by the path SHINE EM with a flood light. You'll probably get the blank "deer in the headlights" look

There have been accidents where a broken Coke bottle that happens to have two jagged points (where it was broken) sitting in a deep mud hole that trespassing 4 wheelers drive through. My what an accident waiting to happen. ;)

RE: trespassers

I was not serious about the razor wire. but the hole thing would not be that bad of an idea though. i would dig a 5 inch deep by 12 inch wide trench across their trail and cover it with something like leaves.

Broken beer bottles in the ruts of their trails. Can't ride with not tires.

RE: trespassers

Well the reason you can get sued or prosecuted for setting up traps isn't to protect criminals, it is to keep people from taking the law into their own hands. True enough a couple flat tires would certainly be a nice lesson for them, but how would you feel if it was a couple kids riding those wheelers and when those tires blew out they rolled the wheeler and got paralyzed or killed? Certainly they would be in the wrong for trespassing, but would the punishment fit the crime? Or instead of kids it was a couple real bad guys, and instead of a couple blown tires teaching them a lesson about trespassing it incites them to turn it up a notch, and the next thing you know your tires are slashed and your windows are broken or worse. I'm sure you can imagine lots of other circumstances where something could go wrong or things get out of hand. So when you think about it, the idea isn't really to protect criminals, it is to prevent vigilantism.

TimberCreek 07-29-2008 09:56 PM

RE: trespassers

How can protecting your own property and assets be vigilantism? Not justifying some of the responses but as a landowner I had tosuffer financially in order to purchase my own property.I have to allow some punk to violate the law and use my property for free? If it is kids then the parents are at fault for not controlling their kids. Again I am not condoning acts to cause harm to another, but there are way too any punks that trespass and I along with many other landowners are not going to take it anymore!

RE: trespassers

I think the bear trap/ tiger trap, big deep hole, covered up, is the way to go, try getting their ATV out of a hole like that? sounds like freebie 4 wheeler to me.

Though the best thing and most responsible action is probably to get them on camera/video, report it to the police, and press all the charges you can to the full extent that you can. No warnings, next time I catch you BS, if you catch them, nail them!

I have had the thought to make a billboard and list the names of those I've caught, prosecuted, and the punishments/fines.

The felony damange to property/crops etc...sounded good to me, like I said any thing you can bust them with, do it! don't feel bad, people need to learn illegal is illegal, I don't care if you won't do it again etc....

Give someone an inch, and they'll take a foot. Locals start to hear that you're you bust everyone no questions asked, they'll stay away.
