How do you explain archery to a know it all?

I work with a guy, and he is planning on buying a crossbow this year, (he has a bow an older Mathews MQ32 which he says shoots 335 fps, atleast thats what the pawn shop told him, I said "I dont think so" and he said "oh yeah its really fast"). Anyway, we got to talking about broadheads and he was telling me he is gonna shoot mechanicals (which is fine with me I dont care what he shoots) because he never could get fixed heads to fly right. I tried to explain to him that trying to use mechanicals as a band aid to cover up poorly tuned bowonly hurts you. I told him to make sure everything was tuned right before he tried mechanicals. he says "oh they tuned my bow and sighted it in for me when I bought it" ( in 2003 ).I tried to explain to him that a mechanical has to hit a deer square for optimal performance, not at an angle due to a wobbly arrow. He then proceeds to tell me he shot a deer quarting away before and never had a problem, thats when I saidI dont think you are getting whatI am talking about. I try to help out but man, he wasnt hearing me at all.

This is also guy that I had to explain to last year that deer hunting with a gobbler guillotine was a bad idea and he couldnt understand why. Hmmmm But he knows everything....

PS. Sorry guysI had to vent.....

Its hard not to try to help when you hear someone talking so crazy. He said he was thinking about selling his bow for 500 dollars last year and i wa slike dude you are never gonna get that. He said oh yeah, its a mathews,I said unless there are 2 of you, you are never gonna sell it for that. I dotn try to act like I know everything but when I hear of somebody doing something wrong I try to help them. ahhhh I guess I will leave him alone..

First of all.....make sure you know more (about the pertinent subject matter at hand)than the person you're trying to teach;)

Sounds like you've got one of the old schoolers on your hands that doesn't appreciate the fact that they can still learn things.

These types are fun to play with. Back 'em into a corner with their own words and false information.....and laugh at 'em. Don't be surprised if the guy backlashes at you and personally insults you, though. It's a common defense mechanism.;)

Good luck with your new project!

I know exactly where your coming from. I've seen it on here to many times and I find myself bickering with someone because there off in never never land about some topic that I know I'm spot on with. It don't pay though, I've got to teach myself that as well.

he's legally hunting right, who are you to tell him anything ?

Thunderheads NEVER flew on my bows like my field point , on any of them, and all of them were well tuned
Shoot expandables quartering away is fine - if it wasn't why the hell are they legal then?
maybe he shoots 85 pounds of pull and a 325 arrow to get 335 on that MQ32 ?

sounds like to me YOU'RE the one trying to tell him everything !

Alright Big Duane, lets see, how can I say this to where you can understand? I never told him what to hunt with or how to hunt. I was explining to him the reason not to use a mechanicla as a band aid for a poorly tuned bow. If you read my very first post (the one at the top of the page) i clearly state I dont care what he uses. Also Big Duane, I have seen his bow and know first hand he does not shoot 85 pounds. I am not trying to "tell him everything" as you put it, I am just trying to explain a few things to him. But clearly you didnt read my first post or you would have known all of this already.

Also, Big Duane nobody said anything badabout shooting a deer quartering away, he thought thats what I was talking about when I said the arrow would hit the deer at an angle. I was in no way putting him down, I was just trying to explain stuff to him...

RE: How do you explain archery to a know it all?

Its not a lack of knowledge, its a lack of passion. Sometime you just have to take it with a grain of salt and allow him to do what he is doing. If he dont care enough about bowhunting to even make sure his bow is tuned after 5 YEARS, then there is nothing you can say to turn this guy around. These types are out there, dont let them get to you.

Is that like the equivalent of a reverse double negative guys?

See, I think people just think whatever their brains want to think because they dissect and process infodifferently than the way I think you or I might!.? Yea, so whatever you think that means you're probably wrong or at least off. :D

Oh, throw selective hearing, room temperature quotient and preconceived notions into the mix and you get IGNORAMOUS MAXIMUS!

You know what killadoe. The biggest problem that some people have is they can't comprehend much thats giving to them. You can tell them one thing and they jump ship to another thing. If people would learn to listen once in a while before they open there mouths they could really surprise themselves literally!!;) Some people it seems would rather take what your telling them as criticism rather then you just trying to be a nice guy. Its there loss!

I agree...

The guy told me himself his bow wasnt shooting right and the only way to get it to shoot decent was with mechanicals. HAHAHA its crazy how people have misinterpretated what I said and are accusing me of picking on him and judging him. I was just trying to explain a few technical details to him and he wasnt hearing it....
