Is Scentlok worth it?
This year is going to be my first archery season. I just bought a parker bow but didnt really buy any clothing, accesories, etc. Should I spend alot of money to buy Scentlock clothing to stay ''hidden''. Or just go out and buy the ''cheap'' stuff and risk it?

ya thats what i am wondering too.

RE: Is Scentlock worth it?
Buy camo clothes, wash camo clothes in non-scented detergent, hang camo clothes on a clothes line outside to dry, place dried clothes into a scent free plastic tub. Hunt the wind and spray down with scent eliminator if you feel the need.
That being said, if you have the money, then according to some guys on here, scentlok really works. |
RE: Is Scentlock worth it?
are you guys related?
but really, no it is not worth it in my opinion. you dont NEED any of the scent control, but i think it helps. what i do is wash all of the clothes i will be wearing in a special scent free soap. ill also wash towels to put on the seat of the truck on the way to the spot. then before every sit, i take a scent free shower with soap that HS makes. then before i walk to my stand i spray, and after i get in my stand i spray. really none of thats needed if you play the wind 24/7. which i dont really do. |

What do you use then. Scentlock or camo?

RE: Is Scentlock worth it?
Not in my opinion and I have two sets that I haven't used in 2 or 3 years. It's hot, doesn't breath well and contrary to what they preach it can NOT be regenerated in a home dryer. Sweat and fatty acids from the body are a non volitile substances, meaning, they do not vaporize out of the clothes as advertised. This "Replicated Human Odor" they talk about in their advertising is a volitile substance that can be collected to an extent by carbon and released with heat because it does vaporize. It's not the sweat and fatty acids of the human body. I refuse to buy boots and clothes with scent lok or scent block in them. Why should I pay an extra $40 or $50 for something I don't want and it doesn't work. Boots are especially ridiculous. You can buy two sets of regular camo for the price of one scent lok.... that's the direction I'd go. If you're in snow country one of those should be a snowflage or something like Skylines Horizon for hunting in the snow.

RE: Is Scentlock worth it?
I have scent loc clothing. I shelled out around 300 bucks for pants gloves and a jacket. Its really nice gear i think very comfortable and light. Also I only got winded once last season. Doe came from directly down wind and got to about my tree and blew. idk if she saw me or smelt me. Other wise i have had many deer besides her come in down wind and have not had any problems. I also take a shower with the soap from HS and spray myself down. I think it was worth the money on my part. It depends if you have enough to get it. It isnt a MUST but it does help and its reassuring.

RE: Is Scentlock worth it?
I wouldn't spend a dime on it personally.

RE: Is Scentlok worth it?
I'm gonna be honest with you two deer hunters going into what it sounds like is your first season.
But just so you know I am unbiased in my hunting accessories as compared with most.. especially here on HNI. I use the scent-lok products and know (and I said know) of there potential to make you a better hunter in the woods by simply helping to eliminate odor (and this goes true with all the scent absorbtion companies). I know.. cause I came from both sides (there was a time I didn't wear it) and I know.. cause I hunt with a degree of dedication that few have. However.. if it is your first few years taking on the challenge of taking a deer with stick and string I would strongly reccomend you to stray away from the scent-lok camos. Not that they won't help.. but its imperative at this stage in your hunting career to not spend the money on the camo.. and understand the wind.. and how to hunt with it... and just to have fun and learn about deer. The scent-lok stuff (and any scent absortion product) is really for a more advanced hunter.. not a beginner. You will just get frustrated using it and preparing it for the field properly.. Getting out there.. learning the basics of woodsmanship.. having fun.. and learning the wind are both of your best bets. Get out there and just start hunting.. your number one concern should be practicing for the "big event". This will be your first lesson. |
RE: Is Scentlock worth it?
I haven't even read the thread, yet.....but are we ready for some of these "awards", yet?:D
We need to give out some designations of ....... HNI's'HOWARD COSELL' SQUAD Howard wrote a book one time called 'I never played the game'. The designation could be for people who constantly denigrate a product.......but have never used it. |
RE: Is Scentlok worth it?
Excellent advice from DM.
Money is tight for a new kid, spend it on more important items. Become a woodsman first and foremost, then everything can take care of itself. IF you want to spend money on clothes, buy QUALITY rain gear & stuff that will keep you warm. |
RE: Is Scentlok worth it?
I have never used Scentlok. I'm going to be using a similar product this year, but it's a silver base, instead of carbon. I still go through scent rituals, regardless of scentlok or not.
I don't believe it's needed, especially for a kid, money is tight. I know. You could put the money to better use, elsewhere. |
RE: Is Scentlok worth it?
Yea for a birthday or christmas and load up on all your hunting gadgets. Just get what you need to get out there and hunt. Time in the stand beats any advice andyone can give you. Learn from your mistakes so when the oppurtunity comes across you can make it happen. Also, don't get frustrated when you arnt seeing deer or you arn't getting any shots. Figure out why that is happening and learn from it. Good luck

RE: Is Scentlock worth it?
Scent lok has it's place. Some need it some don't. One reason to use it is low deer density and unfamiliar area's. If your trying to figure a place out you really have no idea if your up wind or down.
Get what you need. You won't know that until you hunt the place so I'd wait. |
RE: Is Scentlock worth it?
Do you need it? In a word No! Will it help you feel more secure and confident? Yes!
Can you forget the wind and just hunt? No, You must utlize the wind at all times, but there will be surprises. Deer will show up where and whenyou don't expect them to. When that happens, Scent-lok or other scent suppression base layershave helped me. IMHO. |

RE: Is Scentlok worth it?
Several folks here hit the nail on the head.Duke Michaels and RYBO especially from my point of view. You don't need it to kill deer, even big old cagey deer. Will it help I believe it will, but it isn't even near the first places you should be spending your money on hunting equipment.
Woodmanship, meaning understanding deer behavior and the factors that influence it is first and foremost. As RYBO said if you are spending money spend it on things that will keep you comfortable and dry. Good luck to you! I hope you have a blast! |

RE: Is Scentlock worth it?
Either way I wouldn't buy cheap stuff. Good stuff keeps you out there warmly and quietly. Here's an example; I bought some heavy fleece undergarments and wore it as a first layer, it was like living in a bath tub. Next time I wore it over some heavy duty moisture wicking undergrmnets. Much better! But, even before any outerwear I had on over a hundred bucks worth not to mention the socks.
Get stuff that will keep you out there in any condition. Hard to come buy inexpensively. Good stuff also lasts. Lacross has a new boot out that looks killer, about $140. FWIW Scent lok is quality stuff with or with out the scent killing capacity and as far as cost goes, they're all rediculous, but worth it. |
