Using dogs to track game question?

I will make a long story short, we had a lab for 13 years that was part of the family and when he passed earlier this year my oldest has been wearing me out about a new dog. Well last month I bought the family a new dog, a mini daschund pup, my question is would this dog make a good tracking dog? I have heard that the breed makes good tracking dogs but I am unsure of the mini breed...

If this is a possibility, any ideas on where to start with this dog? If not this info will not be needed....:D

Curts, brother...a mini dachshund?? Please turn in your man card! :D

I'm sure any dog could be a great tracking dog if trained right. How do you do that you ask? I have no idea! :D

Send Rob/PA a PM. He has a long haired daschund (I think it has a mullet, actually), tracking dog.

PM Rob, he has a wire haired daschound I believe, that seems to know what he's doing. He can prolly tell you a few pointers on the training.

Errt, John was right above you, I have a Wired Haired Dachshund.

Dachshunds make incredible tracking dogs as they have incredible noses on them. The first place I would look is John Jeanenne's book, Tracking Dogs for finding Wounded Deer. http://www.born-to-track.com/book/order-info.htm

Also, this is a great place to learn. http://www.unitedbloodtrackers.org/

LOL, that's the right end for a dog. ;) He tracks them all and bear too. :) If it bleeds, he's on it and when the bleeding stops, that's where he shines.

Absolutely, I'd imagine the only reason the full size breed is used is speed. I'd imagine the mini being a little slow but the old proverbial saying, slow and steady wins the race. ;)

And Jeff's refering to Axel disappearing one morning while the truck was running ready to head to NC for some spring gobbler. He was missing 5 hours til some guy found him 1 mile away and brought him home. Little bugger was tracking something. [&:]

I guess the weiner dog breed makes agood tracking dog. theres an outfit out of southern Wi that one can hire to track your game, I beleive they are the only outfit out of Wi that has the permit to do this. Other than that I think its stillillegal in Wi to use dogs for tracking deer.
