RE: Extreme FOC arrows
ORIGINAL: PA Hardwoods I think you may be off buddy. I tried to do a setup with the FMJs for myself but the best I could get was like 19-20% FOC and that was with 320 grains up front. 220grn Muzzy Phantom and 100grn bass insert I figured mine the Old fashioned way! By measuring;) Dan |
RE: Extreme FOC arrows
Sounds sweet Greg.
I'm thinking about going with a 100 grain brass insert AND and 125 grain broadhead on a 28" Terminator Lite Select shaft. That would be around 500 grains and 21% FOC. I'd get around 260 fps. So many choices! :D |

Hey even with that 15% FOC that 525grn arrow should still hit nice and hard. |
RE: Extreme FOC arrows
Yeah, I really started contemplating it after shooting a 3d shoot with Jeff and Chris Propst (from Drury Bros. fame...) this summer. Jeff was shooting the arrows he'd made up for his last elk trip that day, and he was out-penetrating me by a good two to three inches in each target. Really started me thinking about momentum and all...

RE: Extreme FOC arrows
I remember Germ and I was confused if you remember.:D
I had never used that formula and showed you the one I use.I doubted the 200 at the time but since I had never actually used that formula,I wasn't going to doubt it.I quess I should have tried it on mine.[8D] Sorry for leaving you hangin like that.:D |
RE: Extreme FOC arrows
I just built and have been pounding my glendell buck with a29 inch 340 (11.1 grains per inch)Axis FMJs, blazer vains... 100 grain muzzybrass inserts up front with 125 grain practice tips. I'll be shooting 125 grain Eclipse teflon coated4 blades come August. My Btech Libertyis set at 80lbsmaxed.. I've never had an arrow fly better orpenetrate like this set up.. I am very pleased to say the least ..extremely clean arrow flight from the Trophy Taker..

RE: Extreme FOC arrows
I agree that high FOC arrows are certainly very stable in flight, my current set up yields 12% FOC. They fly extremely clean.
I'm just thinking outloud here, but how much of this is overkill? What I mean is, I'm shooting a 480 grain arrow, 12% FOC, I'm getting 84 #'s of KE, and while I'll admit I don't know a whole lot about momentum, I'm thinking I have quite a bit. If we're talking about whitetails, all we're really doing now is determining how far in the ground the arrow will be after blowing through said deer. Moose, cape buffalo....Ok, maybe that's not enough, I just don't know. I'm not arguing here, just thinking. Someone tell me what I'm going to gain by adding another 9% FOC. My arrows are flying like fickin laser beams attached to my frickin bow.....And they hit like a tank. They fly extremely clean, they're almost fun to watch in the air. |

Are Extreme FOC (19% and up) overkill on whitetails? Yeah probably but IMHO I would rather have overkill in this situation than underkill. Read the article, I believe you will find it an interesting read. |
RE: Extreme FOC arrows
Chad,
It's been quite a while since I've perused the good doctor's article; wasn't most of his research directed at African game? Not saying it doesn't help to maximize effectiveness in any situation... |
