RE: How I hunt the wind
ORIGINAL: GregH ORIGINAL: Rob/PA Bowyer ORIGINAL: bawanajim ORIGINAL: Vabowman I spray religiously before and whilst Im in the stand. Wind is important, but if it starts swirling and changing, what am I gonna do?? So I spray, what's it gonna hurt. I have to ask Greg with all due respect, why not spray down?? What could possibly be the harm in it?? What I said was....... No matter what you do, if the wind is perfect for the deer, they'll still smell you. I have nothing against these products, I just don't use them. Instead, I hunt a stand location with a wind that makes it impossible for them to detect me. I guess I'm a throw back from the olden days, before the advent of these products, and just learned how to hunt deer without them. If I remember correctly, I believe that Shed33 sent me a scent killing product as part of my prize for winning the big buck contest. I will try it and see what I think. Who knows?? Maybe I'll become an outspoken advocate for these products once I see the dramatic increase in my success!!
I hope you don't take what I said abovethe wrong way but the rut is a different kind of hunting time and the spray just might give you the little edge you need. |
RE: How I hunt the wind
I like you post and agree with what you have to say but during the rut bucks do strange things and at times can come from anywhere. I don't think you can say it's impossible for them not to detect you. I hope you don't take what I said abovethe wrong way but the rut is a different kind of hunting time and the spray just might give you the little edge you need. You have your average hunter.....and you have the guys who know every single nook, cranny, big buck trail, buck bedding area, doe bedding area, prevailing wind, saddle, ridge, oak flat, field edge, funnel, etc......in their TWELVE ACRES of woods. I must admit.. this has been one of the more entertaining threads I've ever read.
I've been checking in over the past few days just to witness the misunderstanding's that are committed between certain members and I find it kinda funny. It's easy to tell (just by the irrational response's) who actually took the time to read every post and who only read the most rescent posted pages.. it's comical.:D These are the cliff notes... Greg with an H (who incidently wishes me dead.. even mentioning my name to others.. which is also hysterical) posted on how he hunts the wind. Trying to better some guys/gals odds. The "Greg machine" as I call it (those who will fight for him til their death) all agreed it was a great way to hunt. And it is. The "rebellion" (the often younger generation who respsect Greg and the old ways.. but come from a newer and more advanced school of thinking) thought the Gregster may be just over doing his routine and wondered why he doesn't use any sort of no-scent materials or spray with such a rigorous routine. The greg machine threw his arms down with great might.. as you have all questioned the master and the masters followers. The rebellion simply wanted to know why not? The greg machine threw down again! Jeff joined in.. a little bit of vinegar for the pot. The greg machines throws down a thunderous proceeding of firm believers in the older ways. The rebellion simply wanted to know why not? Dubbya lead the charge. Jeff laughed.. the rebellion tried to just simply ask a Q or two... And the greg machine threw down a thunderous roar! That's where we are at gents/ladies. Just another off season chat that seemingly went astray. No different from many others. *Please take note that this post was for neither side.. I just wrote it in fun. Most of you will agree it was ridiculous.. and the other will still wish me dead. I did forget to mention Justin's role in the thread. A silly posting with not alot of words.. just a little humor and a bad drawing. Kudos to you JZ.. it also made me laugh. ![]() Carry on gentlemen/ladies/Peakrut. |

RE: How I hunt the wind
I guess to simply this whole thread it would be that ALWAYS hunt the wind, if the wind is iffy or changes while in the stand stay out or get out and, for me, do everything you can to help you out if it can't hurt (Scent-Loc and spray).
I've hunted numerous times in a stand that the wind switched and either I called it a night and left or moved to another stand if there was time to move and wouldn't impact that stand on getting there late. To consistently shoot big bucks youHAVE to use the wind in your favorbecause you will not beat his nose often enough to be successful. |

Guys this has really gotten ridiculous...
The "rebellion" (the often younger generation who respsect Greg and the old ways.. but come from a newer and more advanced school of thinking) thought the Gregster may be just over doing his routine and wondered why he doesn't use any sort of no-scent materials or spray with such a rigorous routine. Guys, as you may or may not know, I do not use any scent killing products. I believe that no matter what you do, the nose of a whitetail is going to smell you if the wind is in their favor. And now we have this, along with "how much land do you hunt?" [blockquote]quote: I just find it mildly amusing when I get a full page fishing dissertation on how to present my Texas rigged worm "just right"........from the guy fishing the tank at BPS.[/blockquote] Post of the day material right there. LT, so if you've got a bunch of 10 pound-plus largemouths on the wall, do you still have as much credibility if they came from an aquarium? I have hunted deer for 41 seasons and have taken 67 deer. 42 of them were bucks. For the last 17 seasons, starting in 1991, I started hunting for mature bucks. During these 17 seasons I have taken 17 mature bucks, 1 with a rifle. Of these 17 bucks, 8 were from Illinois and 9 were from Wisconsin. I hunt in 2 different states and 5 different counties. 2 counties in Ill and 3 in Wis. I took 5 from one county in Ill and 3 from another. In Wis I took 6 from 1 county, 2 from another and 1 from the 3rd one. Scorewise the bucks range from the 120s to 180 and 8 make P&Y. 4 from Ill and 4 from Wis. Acreage wise, in Ill I hunt a 36, 40 and 125 acre spots and in Wis I hunt a 40, 40, 320 and an 80 acre spots. DOES THIS SOUND LIKE A FRICKEN AQUARIUM TO YOU!!! WTF :eek::eek: For some reason, there seems to be some jealousy going on here. Why else would someone try to diminish my accomplishments like this???? ![]() |

RE: How I hunt the wind
[blockquote]quote: Are my observations scientific? No But are they "real" observations and not some "theoretical" conjectured study? Absolutely [/blockquote] Original:GMMAT So YOUR "real" observations are "absolutely" better than science? And scientific studies are (seemingly) "unreal","theoretic" &"conjecture"? Interesting I bet the salesman and the infomercial people just love you. LMAO From the Wildlife Research Center own website *stopping over 99% of odor is based on actual lab testing using replicated human odor. Maybe that qualifies as real and absolute to you............again LMAO I make my living in science. I am a large commercial cattle feeding operator. We measure performance, which ultimately dictates the healthiness of the bottom line, in increments of of one tenth of a pound (that is 1.6 oz) in efficiency as it relates to feed conversions and average daily gains. If I used every feed additive and growth promotent that a salesman came by and backed up its effectivness by a scientific study done at a major university, I'd surely be broke. That is why in the "real" world, we field test these products "in house" to make sure we are getting the same results that they claim from their contolled lab results (andI might add that they paid for). Also, keep in mind that companies are notorious for only publishing the trials that show the results that they want to advertise. They may have done six other studies that didn't show the results that they wanted and never publish or disclose those. But hey, what do I know.I guess a lab test using replicated odor paid for by a company that calls itself Wildlife Research Center is all any of us should concern ourselves with. Thats science if I ever saw it. Thanks for putting me in my place, scienceboy. (sarcasm) |

RE: How I hunt the wind
Dubbya after reading your last post..
I think he was saying he takes 0 chances with a deer's nose. He just does not play the odds when it comes to a whitetails nose. This is how I read it. Agree with Gregh, I also agree with a lot of other points made also. I am a huge believer in scent control, IMO it cannot hurt and I have seen it work. |
RE: How I hunt the wind
Jack:
Come on.....I was eluding to your "field" claims v. those of university scientists......and how they might be skewed, based on your preconceived notions relating to the product at hand. While I agree with you on your assessment of "some" scientific "claims"........we're talking about a handful of hunters (who, admittedly "think" the product is bunk) v. university scientists. You gotta admit.....there's some disparity, somewhere.....or some wool being pulled over some people's eyes by "one" group (blinders, even!). To say these products work 0%......I "think" is being a little naive, dontcha think? That's ALL I was eluding to.....and I'm sorry if the wording offended your professional status. |

Another possibility is that you may be able to hunt a wind that is seemingly wrong for a stand if the wind is blowing OVERthe deerto a place of no concern. I have a couple of stands like this. |
