RE: How I hunt the wind

If you're hunting a spot one day because you have a good wind......where's your scent blowing? Might you hunt, there, tomorrow.....if the wind shifts?

Maybe I'm not understanding this......but why WOULDN'T you do everything in your power to make yourself AS indiscernable to a whitetail as you could? Why not worry about where you might wanna hunt, tomorrow?

That is the best argument yet, for doing all of these "scent reduction exercises/protocols".

If only I could "buy" into the notion that these things actually reduce or eliminate enough scent to make a real difference in how far or how much of my scent travels and it effect on deer, I might start bathing again.:D

All of my opinions regarding scent control measures is based on using them andobserving deer reactions as compared to not using them and observing deer reactions from the same stands, wind directions, weather conditions, etc. I still maintain there is no observable difference, at least for me.

But your question begs what difference could these measures make that are not observable. Well, after pondering that question for a minute.......

Like many of you, deer can come from any direction in some of my spots that I hunt.

A lot of our country is open. I have a bigger observable area than most of you.

Whereas I only bow hunt and try to hunt funels, corners, creek bottoms, etc. I still have the benefit of seeing deer coming my way sometimes as much as a quarter of a mile away on a regular basis.

It is amazing how many deer "wind me" as far out as 150 yards even when I have sprayed down and with scent lok literally from head to toe. Young deer, not so much, but an "alpha" doe or mature buck, their gone way before they get even close to me.

Therefore, based on these repeated observations from these distances, my conclusion is that I can't reduce enough scent to make a difference even in the areas that I might want to hunt tomorrow.

Are my observations scientific? No
But are they "real" observations and not some "theoretical" conjectured study? Absolutely

This is my point exactly. That is why I hunt a stand only if the wind is perfect for it. I also set up my stands so that when the wind is good for them I don't care where my scent goes. I try to get it so that my scent blows onto a neighboring property, out into a plowed field or even out over a lake. One thing is for sure, I will not be hunting the next day where my scent was blowing the day before. The fact is, the wind is the best scent eliminator there is if you hunt it properly.

So YOUR "real" observations are "absolutely" better than science? And scientific studies are (seemingly) "unreal","theoretic" &"conjecture"?

Interesting......

Geesh!! This is just ridiculous. Jeff why don't you just start a different thread all about you and why you don't believe half or all of what GregH believes and practices. Hell, his proof is on his walls. Hello? Is this thing on? Testing. Testing.

Seriously just start another thread and leave those of us alone who enjoy and benefit from a true trophy hunters knowledge.

And after you are done with that, just sit down and get you a tall cold glass of Shut Up and drink it.

Ridiculous I tell ya.

I guess it's about time I went back and read the thread now... usually happens when they hit 15 pages or so.

How does apost that basically said something to the effect of "I check the wind before heading to stand, and don't hunt one with an iffy wind that may blow my scent the direction I expect the deer to come from..." get to 15 pages, anyway? It was a no-brainer in my book.

C'moooooooooon, hunting season.

Greg:

Are you kidding?

I posted a while back that we kill deer coming or going to bed......coming or going to eat......or while out making little deer.

That one got over 7,400 hits and went 37 pages.

C'mooooooooooooooon!:D

RE: How I hunt the wind

OK.here's my 2 cents,if I'm hunting a stand and I know the prefered travel pattern it makes since not to hunt this stand if the wind will be blowing into the direction the deer will most likely be coming from, notice I said most likely because here where I hunt they can and do come from any direction. When I know this for a fact the best thing I can do is to keep my scent to a minamal, maybe spray down with scent eleminator and I do like to use earth cover scent. It makes the scent of me less noticable not as strong if you know what I mean.I do have stands that I know that "most"of the time the deer will travel in a certain direction and I can then use wind direction as a determining factor on wheather to hunt that spot or not.
