It was a good post and appreciated. I too do my best to hunt the wind. Perhaps not to the Nth degree but is is worth looking into. I am with who-ever said once a hill, mountain, tree line, or any other type of wind-break is introduced at your exact stand, those degrees are thrown off. You need to know what a wind direction means at your location sometimes the perfect general wind condition produces a swirl at your spot..(anyone watch the Masters? Hole 12 come to mind?).

I'd like more information on your approach or departure. At some point you are going to break the rule of hunting the wind. It's impossible not too. Sometimes you have to avoid areas to not spook deer by sight or sound and throw wind into the mix and you can't avoid them all. Also if you park north and walk in, into the wind, leaving, it's blowing the opposite way. Depending on where you hunt, sometimes you are limited on parking areas.

This thread had me thinking.....so I went back about a year to a NAW article I'd read by a guy named (I think) Bobby Worthington about this very thing. The header on his article was "All or nothing".

While I don't go to the extremes he does in scent control......his point was....if you're not doing everything you can to diminish your scent......why do anything? Why NOT spray down? Why wash your clothes in scent killer soap? Why NOT eat what you want? Why NOT smoke on stand? Why worry about your entrance and exit routes?

If you're hunting a spot one day because you have a good wind......where's your scent blowing? Might you hunt, there, tomorrow.....if the wind shifts?

Maybe I'm not understanding this......but why WOULDN'T you do everything in your power to make yourself AS indiscernable to a whitetail as you could? Why not worry about where you might wanna hunt, tomorrow?

I haven't been at this that long.....but long enough to KNOW that if a deer Im after is in a certain area.....THAT is where I need to be. If the wind's favorable on a certain day....Ill be there. If it shifts the next day.....I'd like to think I didn't stink the place I wanted to hunt him in (i.e. the place he IS), by not practicing EVERY scent prevention method I could, the day before.

Seems kinda elementary, to me.....UNLESS you dont care about where your scent is going.....and whether or not you "might" NEED to hunt, there, tomorrow.

I say this from the perspective of someone who hunts small parcels (most less than 25 wooded acres). if you have LOTS of targets....and lots of acreage.....I could see where it might not matter as much.

I don't think "most" of us hunt that way, though.;)

I actually hunt so that my scent is blown on to a neighbors land and spooks his deer into thinking my land is safer.;)

Another perfect example of a good thread going bad. Will some of you ever learn. You nitpic this and that. If it doesn't apply to you why tear it down?

Here is my question to you. Will a deeridentify you easier if you leave more scent then less? My answer is I'm not so sure. If it was a human trying to identify a scent, then yes, heavier or more of a scent will make it easier.But, I don't believe that deer process scent the same as humans do. They have much more ability to detect and identify scents (many more then one at a time) whether it is faint or strong. I know you'll probably throw a lot of words out like this is "elementary"or "common sense", but there you have it.

Tomorrow I might be hunting 30 miles from where I am today. So, even if my scent gets blown in that direction I am not to sure it will make it there.

First of all, thanks to the original poster for some great advice and insight. Not sure if it was overanalyzed or not, I think some just wanted to know more.

I choose to use scent-killersoap, spray, etc., because a) it's not too expensive b)I feel it helps and c) what does it hurt?

I used to not think so much about hunting the wind until a couple of seasons ago. I totally screwed up on two monsters in the same season all because I didnt listen when I was told to hunt the wind. You guys that disagree with hunting the wind will start to listen when you see a 140+" turn his nose up and blow at you.:(I am not sayin that the sun dont shine on a dogs ass every once in a while though....
