Which bino's are you using?

I've got an older set of swaro 7x42 that is the cat's azz for low light viewing. But they are big and bulky and I've got the itch to try some of the newer, lighter, more sleek models......

My main question is what size bino do you feel is perfect for bowhunting?

RE: Which bino's are you using?

I'm still using the same set of Bushnell compacts I've had for 20 years, so I'm kinda looking forward to the responses you get. Gotta be compacts though. I don't need 'em if they're too heavy to carry.

I don't know how perfect mine are, but I just bought a pair of Leupold 8x42 Pinnacles.I'm guessing they're middle of the road bino's for $400. They are super crisp!I love them.;)

RE: Which bino's are you using?

IMO.....8X42's.

The extra magnification does me NO GOOD in the tight areas I bowhunt in.....and they're probably a detriment when trying to get a clear picture window, quickly (Since you'd need ....I think....to hold the higher powered binos more steadily).

Just my .02

I was using the Burris 10X42's for several years but kept having to send them back for repair (they always replaced them under warranty) but last year I cut it too close to deer season. So, I bought the luppy cascade 10X42's and am really glad I did, they are a really good, clear set of bino's and I like the fact that they have the auto eye relief feature. Never could quite get the Burris perfectly clear where the luppy'sare with no adjustment.

Same but in 8X42's to stay bino qualified in 3D events. They are every bit as nice as my Brunton 10x50's and former Bushnell 12X50's.

Nikon Monarch 10x42s... I tried both the 8xs and the 10xs and didn't feel I was giving up anything that Jeff alluded to above (since I had the same concerns) and decided to take the little bit of extra magnification as a bonus.

I bought these last year and love them for under $200.
I had taken them on my Texas hunt and let one of the other guys in camp use them after I bagged my 8 pointer and he loved them.
Along with a few of the guys that had Swar, Leica and other big names
They are not high priced, pretty crisp and good to carry for the back pack

I was "thinking" you had to hold steadier to keep a clear sight picture when you went up in magnification. I could be wrong. That's why (along witht he size factor) I went with the 8x's.

I know your all a bunch of rich guys, but I'd seriously look through some Alpen 8X42's. A buddy of mine has a pair of Swaro's and my Alpen's are every bit as clear.

Binos need to be sized for the area you hunt. I use 10 X 32 Leupold Katmai's They are a good compromise for the different areas I hunt.

Leupold 8x42 Pinnacles.

Don't forget Leupold is offering 40% discount to active duty and retired military members.
Dial 1-800 LEUPOLD and ask for military sales.

Leupold 8x32 Katmai's for bowhunting because of their size and quick focus.

Leupold 10x42 Cascades for firearms for the extra magnification around fields.

Both are extremely sharp.

BGfisher 07-17-2008 08:10 PM

RE: Which bino's are you using?

I use Swar 8x30, for obvious reasons. Quality and light gathering in low light conditions.

If you are lanning on compacts I would go with the better quality glass just for these reasons. I'd recommend Leica, Swar, Zeiss. Their compacts are better than most full sized Japanese models.

If you go looking to compare don't look through them in a well lit store. They all look good in good light. Try to compare them in low light like you might for hunting. This is where quality shines.

Nikon Monarch 8x42's. I think the 8's do better in lowlight that 10's and they work better for bowhunting!

Nikon 8x42's here too. Better in low light than the 10s and they are all I need for bowhunting.

I wasn't sure you were looking for the brand names, also.....and I didn't address that in my previous post.

I, too, chose the Nikon Monarch ATB's (at the suggestion of Greg/MO - Thanks, Greg;)). Along with my Summit climber.....it's one of the best two hunting purchases I've ever made. I feel lost without them.....as I've forgotten them 2-3 times over the past two seasons.
