Best Scent Control Product
What do you guys think is the best at destroying human odor.

RE: Best Scent Control Product
All I have used is H.S. and it works well. But I don't know about the others.
|
RE: Best Scent Control Product
I usually use H.S. scent Away. However think all of your options work well. None better than the other just personalpreference.

RE: Best Scent Control Product
Primos Silver XP. That stuff is amazing. It covers up Skoak, Listerine, and buck lure. We tried all three in small cups and then sprayed the Silver XP in to the cups...you couldn't smell a thing!
|
RE: Best Scent Control Product
I too use HS(body and clothes soap)too butany of themwould have to bebetter than none....As for sprays I will be using the PrimosSilverXP this year!!!!
|
RE: Best Scent Control Product
I have used HS for years and never had a problem with it. Last year I purchased Dead Down Wind, mostly because my archery shop and just started to carry it. It worked really well also, I cannot say if DDW or HS is better than the other, just that they both seemed to work really well for me.

RE: Best Scent Control Product
doesthe silver xp have actual silver in it cause that is a different type of scent control than the basic scent control of hs.
Silver doesn't actually cover any scents up. It helps attack bacteria. of course bacteria itself is oderless but all the crap attracted to it is not. If i remeber right HS covers rely mainly on oxidation. where silver is used inadsorption. But all can be effective if used properly. |

RE: Best Scent Control Product
I like common sense and knowledge of prevailing wind direction. I can only smell myself if I flat out stink or if I have some sort of cologne or aftershave on. I think that using garments that keep you comfortable, and try to keep sweating to a minimum... plus the care you use in cleaning/prepping them (odorless detergents and line drying) will make more of difference than anything else.

RE: Best Scent Control Product
I have tried several of the products listed. I think some can evengive you a negative effect, but for years I have used Robinsons Scent Shield and it always works for me very well.
Scent control is really an all or nothing thing. IMHO if you do everything you can to neutralize your scent you will have some very positive results. There is no magic potion that will work regardless of what else you do or don't do. Dan |
RE: Best Scent Control Product
im with MeanV...
other than playing the wind, theres nothing that you can spray available right now(i say this becasue who knows what they will come out with someday) and all the sudden you have no scent....if you dont have a full blown plan and regimend, you might as well not even waste the 10 or 15$ on spray because your still going to stink up the woods too much to see results. last year i realized that....i can honestly say i dont know of one deer that winded me last season...i do use DDW, but ontop of that theres scent lok, sportwash, a sealed bin my clothes and boots go into, DDW showers, body whips and foams, changing in the woods and not wearing my gear ANYWHERE but in the woods...not getting sweaty... yes, i had to get up about an hour or so earlier....but, i took my shower, changed in the woods, applied some foam to my hands and such that i know i contacted stuff with, geared up and sprayed down and set out, packing my outter layers and walking slower than my normal sprint...i was alot more comfortable and could sit longer not being sweaty, and what i did seemed to have worked....and yes i still pay attention to the wind and try not to cross trails etc etc....but, im in hill country...the wind is tough to play...and my deer seem to always come from the wrong direction and always seem to cross my trail... just gotta find a "system" that works for you.... |

i like the homemade scent killer, i didn't get winded when using it. i had about 15 does down wind at 30yrds, they did blow or run off. but they were a little spooky.

Look, I didn't mean to insult you. I assume then that you use baking soda, because I just can't imagine that you use Tide for your hunting clothes. But that IS scent control, yes? If hunting the wind were all that is needed, why do anything else?? |
RE: Best Scent Control Product
Not to hijack the thread, but is White Lightning still on the market? I had good luck with it a few years back. Vanishing Hunter was a good one too, but both are hard to find w/o ordering online.
I've never gone so far as to dress in the woods, but I do the scent free showers, sport wash the clothes, spray down with a scent eliminator, etc. Its been working well enough for me, much more than that and it seems like work IMO. |

RE: Best Scent Control Product
I say keeping your clothes clean and hanging outside is a great start. The most overlooked part of one's hunting clothing is their boots.

RE: Best Scent Control Product
I'm guilty, I use a scent free soap to take showers! Baking soda for the washing machine! I did kill a Doe last year after work with no scent control, just playing the wind... I'm just sayin....:D:D:D:D
On a serious note, it is a good thing to take proper steps for scent control as in showering and camo wash.. But that spray stuff is even more of a gimmick than the Scent Blocker clothing! Spraying your money away every hunt has got to get expensive?? But this is just my opinion, to each his own! |

[/blockquote] So then, you guys don't wash your clothes in unscented soap, or take showers w/ unscented soap before you go hunting, right? ;)I HIGHLY doubt that's the case. [/blockquote]Yes I do take showers but no I don't use unscented soap for showers or for my clothes. Geez what did people do 15 years ago when this stuff wasn't out??;) Hunt the wind is your best scent control bar none! If hunting the wind were all that is needed, why do anything else?? I wash my hunting clothes in regular detergent and I bathe the same whether I am hunting or not. When in the mountains, I sometimes go without a bath for 7 days straight, yet I have still been able to take elkor mule deer on that last day. Go figure. I do however hunt the windeach and every timeI hunt. If the wind is wrong for that set up, I either go to a different spot or stay at home. Save your money for something more worthwhile. JMHO |

RE: Best Scent Control Product
My dog was sprayed by a skunk and I sprayed him down with my homemade scentkiller. It got rid of the skunk smell so you could say it passed my test :D. Someone mentioned boots. When I wear my leather boots I spray my socks, the inside of the boots and the outside of the boots. Then I step in mud, deer crap, whatever on my way in. Probably doesn't eliminate my scent but I am betting it dilutes the heck out of it.
Homemade scentkiller - 0ne quart of distilled water, one quart of hydrogen peroxide 3%, 1/2 cup of baking soda and one ounce of scent free (unscented) shampoo or body wash. |

Gimmick? Since Scent Killer can remove gasoline smell off my hands, I think I'll continue to use that type of "gimmick" for many years to come. ;) |

I was going to post a question asking the very same thing, thanks Kamil. I am eager to see how this comes out. I get too few of opportunities to harvest an animal to gambel on if the stuff works a little or a lot, for the price I will use some kind of product this year.

RE: Best Scent Control Product
I guess thats cheap enough! It just seems like those guys on the idiot box are spraying them selves down every hunt. They spray every piece of gear from stands, bows, boots to tow ropes! I just thought that would get expensive if you used the stuff they way they say your supposed to!
Whether you only use one squirt of it or a whole case, your results will be the same.:D We as humans, try to rationalize everything back to OUR senses when we form opinions on these type products. Even though most of us accept the fact that a deer's nose sensors are over 1000 times better than ours, we still equate things back to how we smell or see things and somehow think that the same or similar results occur with deer. This same misconception applies to camo. Just because it is harder for us to detect a person in a wooded environment, we naturally try to associate that with deer even though we know that their eyesight and color detection is completely different than ours. But it is these misconceptions that helps the U.S. economy, so keep buyin' whatever makes you happy and gives you "the edge". |
RE: Best Scent Control Product
But Jack....
WHO gets to draw the line in the sand between what "works" and what's a "gimmick"? If we used the logic from your thread......why even wash your clothes in neutral detergent......or avoid smoking on stand? Where's that line? I spend about $15/season on e3 and another $12/season on DDW detergent. If it covers up 1% (though I and millions of others think it's doing a lot more)more than NOT using it.....then that line you're talking about is a financial one that some just don't wanna cross. |
RE: Best Scent Control Product
Presently I use 3 different one's that I have a lot of faith in.Vanishing Hunter,The Homemade concoction ,which I make close to a gallon at a time, and I use Atsko no odor. They all work well. The Atsko and Home made stuff is quite inexpensive. The vanishing hunter I use to rinse out my mouth with.
Obviously you hunt with the wind in your favor but in my mountains I don't have the luxury of a consistent wind, also does the buck always appear from the direction you expect them to?:DDoes a doe sometimes bring them down wind of you? Yes you take into consideration the obvious and then you take into consideration what may happen. |
