I would love tolook it up for you, but I am leaving for the weekend first thing in the morning and have a few things to take care of...

Also, I am not sure I have all 4 newsletters from last year still.

I put the stats up for everyone to see. Most of the people who replied to the thread appreciated it but like always a particular someone has got to take it to the next extreme.

I honestly believe that Indiana is the best kept secret for bowhunting huge whitetails. Im working on getting a new farm across the river in Switzerland Co. right now crick. Theres been quite a few big NTs coming out of the area.

It doesn't really suprise me. If you look at the hunting culture in some of these areas, especially Canada, a lot of people don't give a **** about entering their buck into a record book. Deer hunting is more of a way of life than a way to prove oneself.

Scott....

My internal calculator took a mental blip. I stand, corrected.

.0004 leaves me with what...... .00036 more of a chance.

I'm giddy!

Great buck Stick!!

GMMAT 07-11-2008 09:58 AM

RE: Pope And Young News Letter stats

Going by your formula....

300,000 Ohio archers divided by 90 entries= .0003
Since we're checking math and all.....those 90 entries were only for one quarter as well.

If we extrapolate (seems to be the thing to do around here, lately...lol)....you stand an 80% better chance of bagging one in OH than you do in NC.

That's .0012 v. .0004 (suited to match our state's # of bowhunters).

You have 3X the bowhunters we do.....and 9X the number of entries. Competition and pressure doesn't seem to be as much of a detriment as some would have us think! Having an abundance of available targets seems to trump those factors...and in a BIG way.

But like I said.....You're sayin' there's a chance!;)

Nice post Shultzy!
To bad things need to taken to a different level than what was intended for.[>:]

I can vouch for NH not being on "the map", most of us up here don't want anyone to know what we shoot.
As an example, I have a friend that has 11 badges of honor (200+ lbs.) that would all score near/over the minimum and doesn't say boo about it.

Schultzy 07-11-2008 10:21 AM

RE: Pope And Young News Letter stats

There's always a chance GMMAT! I remember you once saying there wasn't hardly any P&Y bucks from NC. From one quarter alone there's 10. Maybe next time there will only be 5, or maybe there will be 15 next time. Who knows I guess but they are there and it can be done. Look at Troy in Idaho. Hardly any entries from that state, he's done excellent but I guarantee you he's worked his but off to get what he's got.

The biggest buck last quarter entered from NC was 155 3/8ths. Thats an awesome buck in my eyes. I guarantee you have P&Y bucks around, maybe not many but there around you somewhere. Hold out on the smaller bucks, give it a shot. Until you do that how can you not say there isn't any around? Who cares what your trail cams say or what other locals in the area say. The locals around here say the same thing, there isn't no big bucks around! You might surprise yourself instead of making your accusations all the time of what your trail cam say and the locals say.

Steve, thanks for posting that, very interesting!

The stats do matter. Try to tell outfitters they don't!

I agree that the scoring system is screwed up. The only thing we really go by is NT gross. That tells you exactly how much bone is on the head of the whitetail, IMO that is the way it should be. If a guys has 5 fingers on his left hand, and 6 fingers on his right, you could ALL 11. :D

In Manitoba we have a bow hunting records club, This past year there were 34 enteries that met or exceded the p/y minimum. mine was one of them and i never entered it into p/y.

You wanna take the "Not entering" thing to the absolute extreme?
Greg and I were shown a gross 207" typical (Net 194 or 196"? can't remember the exact number)
by a guy hunting the same general area as us that he killed the week before.

He said he has no plans to enter it for anything and there's one of maybe what would you guess?.........a dozen orless gross 200" typicals probably taken last year?

There's a WORLD class whitetail that nobody but a couple locals will ever know about.

If it was me I would have a replica of the P&Y score sheet tatoo'd onto my chest. [:-]:D

2 Biggest Bucks I saw out of my stand last year were never caught on either of my Cams.

Only way you kill the Big Deer are to pass up the Dinks.

It just depends on what you want;)

Right now I want a Doe!! I'm Hungry:D

What this tells me, is that the stats don't mean much. I make my own stats andI have a 90% chance of killing a P&Y on public landthis year, I have no dout that I will getit done.

Right on with everything there Dan. I've been out of venison for about 3 months now so a doe would be excellent. I hope we get more then 1 tag in the zone I hunt this year.

Yeah, I sure wish I had his eyes and skills, unfortunately I have a hard time seeing BROWN, not a good deer hunting combo!!!

The bear hunting is pretty good in NH & ME, my buddy got a P&Y 327.5lb. 20 7/16" black bear in Sept. 2005.
I have managed to get this skull after he passed away @ 42 in Jan. 2007.
I'll take some pics and email them to you.

I have noticed a trend that many hunters now could care less about entering their whitetails into the P&Y books. Alot of people these days don't even talk about NET score...it's all about the GROSS.

I however am a P&Y member and have entered animals and probably would in the future.

Thanks for putting together the interesting data Schultzy.

During the off season I tend to disappear from the hunting forums for awhile and then get interested again as the season gets closer. I have come in here a few times latelybut haven't posted much.
