Beware of this little creature
Has anyone hadan unfortunate encounter with a red velvet ant, aka Cow Killer, while hunting or scouting? If you don't know what I'm talking about, it's largered fuzzy looking ant, only it's not really an ant. It's actually a wingless wasp that looks like alarge ant.Warning: DO NOT PICK THIS CRITTER UP. I found out the hard way that this critter has a pretty potent sting. Even with gloves on,it nailed me pretty good. I'd seen them often in the woods and decided to take a closer look at it. Bad decision. I figured it coudn't bite me through my glove. Well it didn't. It stuck its half inch long stinger right through my glove. Believe me, their sting is worse than a normal wasp. Anybody ever been popped by one of these things? If your in the woods enough, you will encouter one.I know there are plenty of them downin the south, but are they up north also?

Boy I'm glad we have a real winter here.........tends to keep the jurrasic wasps to a minimum.

RE: Beware of this little creature
I haven't seen anything like that yet but I going to keep my eyes wide open now. Half inch stinger holy crap, sure it wasn't a scorpion?

RE: Beware of this little creature
We have velvet ants here in MD, and it seems they're more abundant these past few years. When I see one (typically in a field, not the woods), I'll stomp it - they are tough to kill. I've never tested their stinging ability, lol.
Fortunately, they are not aggressive and will try to escape from you... -fsh |
RE: Beware of this little creature
Never seen anything like that up here I guess its because our winters, real winters, are usually sub 0 most of the time so it kills all them little buggers.

RE: Beware of this little creature
I seen one here in Illinois a few years back. Didn't remember the black stripes on it though. I just remember trying to find out what it was on the internet.

that is one nasty lookn' little bugger. thank goodness we have the frozen tundra up here in the winter, kills off anything that looks like that. Now as for our state bird, the mosquito, people have been found drained of their blood!:D

I got hammered by one of those bad boys about 30 years ago. I was going fishing with my dad and we were catching grasshoppers. I saw on of those crawling along and grabbed it. [:@] YOWZER!!!! THAT HURT!!!!!

Bald face Hornet These buggers hurt!! and they are tough!! Two of them were on a death match together and we dropped a railway tie about 4 feet long on them and when it toppled over they both flew up and chased us, I've never ran that fast in my life!!!:D ![]() |
