RE: Standards. Do they change season to season?

My standards don't change, I try to put something in the freezer, help the state's game management plan as best I can, and just have a good time. It's a hobby folks.

Good post Greg, I hope you don't think all of the Traditional hunters are like that!

As for my standards they will not change one bit what so ever. Whats the point of having a standard if your going to go below it in the end? People have to learn to follow through with these/there standards to make things come full circle down the road. Whatever toots your horn is what you should do but if your willing to get serious enough about it you have to follow through. Big bucks aren't hanging on people's walls because of just luck and location. There hanging there because they are holding out and going buckless here and there through out the years.

Shoot a doe in place of that smaller buck if you want that buck bigger next year. Standards are tough to do but once you do it a few times its not as hard the next time to let them walk .

Good thread to Bry!!:D

Duane, there is no doubt in my mind that year in and year to to consistently kill mature bucks with a traditional bow would be my greatest challenge, even tougher than killing elk here with the same gear, jmo.. I've killed a lot of elk too...and yes my compound imo is easier to shoot and I am more deadly at greater ranges than I would be with a trad bow, my range would be morelimited, I do like the idea of hunting with a traditional bow off the ground though.. and I may give it a go in the future...can it be done year in and year out with a trad bow on big mature bucks here... I think so...but tough... I dont know many guys here that do it.. actualy none consistently with trad gear.. here anyway in these big woods.. I do know a few guys that do it year in and year out here with trad gear on big bulls. Very few though.

PT.....just asking....

But do you see where YOUR idea of "fun" and say.....Shed's might be two completely different things?

I'm all for everyone having "fun".....but I know your definition and mine describe two completely different endeavors.

Just asking....

Great post Steve. I really like your perspective on this. It's very interesting to see how everyone would react if circumstances put you in a tough spot. Bloodcrik/creek/Dink/Dan was in this very position this year when EHD decimated his herd. He adjusted his goals accordingly and took the type of buck he was after for this past season. He will adjust again this season and try to score on his new goal. Others would hold to their standards even if there was no evidence that a buck meeting those standards was roaming their hunting property knowing that next year there likely would be more. Big Duane is happy to get any deer as long as he is doing it with his traditional gear.

That's what is great about this topic. Absolutely no wrong answer.

Yes, this about sums it up for me. If deer hunting becomes "not fun" to me, it then becomes a priority. I have enough "more important" things in my life to live for. I don't live for big bucks, or any deer for that matter. I do enjoy "hunting" them though.

Can't see it being any fun any other way for me either.
