RE: closest shot on deer?

My first deer with a bow I shot from only 1 yard from the base of my tree. I shot straight down like a complete idiot. I WILL never take that shot again in my life. 10 hours of tracking and taking a day off of work later I found that deer under a hollowed out tree next to a creek. I lost the blood trail 50 yards from where I shot him and was about ready to give up when I remembered what guys on here told me about gut shot deer and heading to water. I walked another half mile back in and traced the creek back and found him! I owe this place for helping me find my first bow buck.

Several years back, I had an 8ptbuck run right towards me when I was standing on the ground. It was probably 3-4 yards, and I ended up arrowing him at he paced broadside of me. At thatdistance, I just instinctively shot and made a double-lung hit.

I'm not a bow hunter as my career keeps me from hunting that season, but I couldn't help but chime in. When ELK hunting last year, I walked up on a blacktail buck and his girlfriend. He got up, saw me... walked closer to as to actually charge me.. to about 5 meters away. Only when his girlfriend got up and pounced off did he decide to chase after her than charge me. Murphy's law in action--only the best shots come out of season.

Forget archery--that buck was so close I could have taken him with a spear. [:@]

2-3 yards from a treestand. Arrow entered just below the spine and exitedjust off center of thesternum. A one lung hit. (I thought I'dhit them both)

Blood spurted everywhere and the deerfell down only 15 yards from my tree. However, it didn't actually die for another 20 minutes. (couldn't get another arrow in because it was too thick and I was worried that if I climbed down it might get up and run off) That'sprobably the longest, most horrible 20 minutes I've had in a treestand.

I've avoided steep downward shots ever since.

entrance

exit. Because of how the deer was laying the blood is actually much farther over than the hole.It looks better than it is.Actual hole is through part of the sternum.

I was on a creek bank at the base of a tree when dogs ran a doe into the creek. She swam right at me and hid under a log in creek. I could have cut her throat with my knife, but instead stcuck my broadhead into her at 2 ft.
