What kind of food do you take to the stand?

I was kind of wondering to what degree of a meal all of you long day hunters take with you to the hunting stand. I usually take hot oatmeal fora snack and hot soup for lunch inside of those little insulated coolers. Everytime I open the soup though I think the whole county can smell it, and probably can but I have seen deer while eating or shortly after.

RE: What kind of food do you take to the stand?

The best lunch I've ever had in stand is deer sausage, a nutty bar and an apple. YUM-O! Something about that nutty bar though.....I don't know how many times I've had a deer walk by while I was eating one.....

RE: What kind of food do you take to the stand?

When/if I take food (a rarity)....I usually take a power bar or peanut butter sandwiches. Up until this season, though....my furthest walk to stand has been .7 mi from my home. I can be down and at my table in less than 30 minutes, tops.

If I sit for extended periods, this fall....I'll take shelled peanuts a lot. Great source of protein....and the smell shouldn't be something I'd worry about. I used to feed in my woods with a mix of corn/peanuts. I KNOW they love peanuts....lol.

Man that is me! A nutty bar is a must in my pack. No matter if its an all day sit or just a couple of hours I pack at least one. I also carry apples, PB&J sandwiches, and granola bars. The quantity varies depending on the length of the hunt.

Da nutty bar, that deserves a post of its own. When I eat those things I actually seperate the layers and eat them individually.

Nutty Bar, Peanut Butter Sandwich and Apples. I don't eat much when I'm in stand unless it's an all day hunt.

RE: What kind of food do you take to the stand?

Usually PB&J sammiches, an apple or two, and perhaps a chewy granola bar. In warm weather I tend to still hunt more and don't often bring food unless I plan to be out for more than a few hours.

MountainHunter 07-02-2008 11:25 AM

RE: What kind of food do you take to the stand?

I usually hunt all day. When I do, I bring one or more of the following:
peanut butter and banana sandwich
shelled pistachios – I find that they are great to store in my cheek (like a squirrel) and just slowly snack on them throughout the day without any visible movement
granola or energy bar (or three)

RE: What kind of food do you take to the stand?

If I'm in the stand all day I usually bring along beef jerky, a PBJ sandwich and a granola bar of sorts. Just enough to get me through the day.

I usually bring a few apples, maybe a granola bar, and some water. I usually do not eat anything. But I do chew gum (the only time of the year for me). If I plan on being on stand for a very long time, I like peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

I was really looking forward to hearing John's list given the dimensions of his physical being.I thought there would be multiple sandwiches, granola bars, fruit, blended protein drinks etc..Instead we get tuna on rice cakes with bottled water.:D
I am so disillusioned! John you aren't going to harm me if we ever meet are you?:D

LOL!!

No, I'm really not a big eater when I'm hunting and I won't eat it all at one time so as to avoid the "crash" you get when your body digests the sugars and carbs. I want to stay alert and that's another reason why I stay away from sugars and complex carbs when I choose my snacks. The "jelly" in the PBJ is a natural preserve and the bread is low carb. This keeps the complex carbs (ones without fiber content) down and prevents that tired feeling you get about an hour after you eat. That along with nibbling throughout the day (no big meal) will go a long way in preventing that from happening.

Sadly, I wish I could tell you I have a big appetite and eat a lotbut I really don't.......What I do have is the metabolism of a snail![&:]

tsoc 07-02-2008 01:16 PM

RE: What kind of food do you take to the stand?

Yes it is all about metabolism.I am 6' 1" and 175 lbs. and I eat like a rescued POW.I guess I should be thankful.I do eat healthy though,no deserts, very little bread etc.
When I am hunting it depends upon how long I am going to be out and how cold it is.On an all day hunt I will have one big sandwich a piece of fruit and two or three healthy snack bars, some times I will mix raisins with raw almonds or peanuts for some quick energy.
If my metabolism ever slows down I will be in trouble. When I was in high school my buddies and I would stop at a diner I would order and the waitress would walk away, she thought I was ordering for the table.

As long as I have plenty of snuff, I'm ok. Ifit's hot I'll bring a bottle of water.

When I was young and working with my dad he wouldn't let us take lunch breaks so, if need be, I can still do without lunch.

RE: What kind of food do you take to the stand?

I usually have a Natures Valley granola bar. The kind that come two bars in a wrapper and are hard/crunchy. If I eat a pack of those it will sooth the hunger for a while and give me a lot of energy for about 3 or 4 hours. When I go out all day I bring a sandwich and just go back to the truck to eat.

RE: What kind of food do you take to the stand?

I grab a donut on my way out because when I get up I am in a hurry to get there. I always carry with me a chocolate bar like a snickers or something like that. That is because I usually head in for lunch at around 10 or 11 anyway. But considering that I will probably be getting a Summit tree stand, I could be up there all day so I will likely be packing some turkey sandwiches as well.

RE: What kind of food do you take to the stand?

I'm not staying all day, usually about three hours.
In a stand I'll only take a bottle of water.
In a blind, I'm taking a bottle of water, a banana, and a MT Dew.

Man, some of you guys are "Fred Bearish".....only eating like 300 calories all day! I don't know about you, but hiking in a good ways gives makes me hungry! A short sit of 3 hours I will just bring waters and maybe a granola bar. A half-day to all day sit I am bringing 3-4 sandwiches, apples, snickers bar, dried fruit, more..hahaha! I am the king of the leftovers, so I will take things left over from dinner the previous night. :)

RE: What kind of food do you take to the stand?

pb& j ,water ,snickers bar, sometimes nuts, When its really cold out sometimes the flavored waters turn to a slushy, which is kind of nice but the snickers turns so hard you can break your teeth. I have to bite into them slowly when they are like that
