Fawn. Yearlings are year old deer...IMO, a deer that had spots a week ago and doesn't now is still a fawn...

After the spots come off, we usually call them "This year's fawn." Yearling is one year old.

That is an interesting perspective... I think alot of people just call it what they were taught, kind of like a tradition if you will..

Around non hunters I will call it a yearling even though I know it is not a year old yet.I want to get away from the soft language of the word fawn.Around hunters I will say what it is a fawn,or this years deer.I don't choose to kill fawns. If I did I would be reluctant to say in anon hunter audience that I killed a fawn.It would seem like you would be setting yourself up to be judged in a manner you wouldn't want to be.

You can call it whatever you want. But until a deer is one year old it is a FAWN. And it's not an opinion, it is FACT.

RE: What do you call a young deer that has lost its spots?

How young we talking about?:D

What you describe is most likely a fawn.

The term yearling refers to an animal in it's second year. I'm not even sure it needs to be the second CALENDAR year......as a foal is called a yearling after the next calendar year turns (if I'n not mistaken). So..."I" would call a deer born in May....a "yearling" in January.

Edit** - OK...I looked it up.

Definitions of yearling at Dictionary.com. ... 2. a horse one year old, dating from January 1 of the year after the year of foaling.

RE: What do you call a young deer that has lost its spots?

deer born this May-June time frame are fawns until next May-June. At that point they are yearlings until the next May-June at which time they become adult deer (note I did not say mature and stir that pot:D).

RE: What do you call a young deer that has lost its spots?

Definition wise it isnt a yearling till its a year old. But traditionally and regionally, people have called fawns without spots "yearlings". I was brought up to call them yearlings if they are this years fawns with no spots. Everybody that I know in my region/area calls them this. Not saying its the right way or the wrong way, its just that old timers did it and have passsed it on to the younger generation, as I will with my kids. To say you killed a fawn around somebody who doesnt hunt or dont understand what you are saying, usually doesnt sit well with them.

Why change why does it have to be so politically correct.

I agree with most here. IMHO, a yearling is a 1.5. I would call it a fawn.

Obviously you can do whatever you want, but calling a fawn a fawn is not polically correct it is just correct. Obviously it isn't going to change the rotation of the earth, whatever anyone calls them;)

My advise is to loose the attitude, mister. As long as they have horns.....I dont care what you call 'em.

(and if you didn't know....that was completely in jest);)

I call it a fawn. I don't use the term "yearling". I usually say year and a half old.
