IL - # of hunters/sq. mi. = 1.97
IL - # of P&Y bucks/hunter = 1 in 297

Where did they get that info? I know that during shotgun season there are at least 8 guys hunting 120 acres near my house. Opening day, you can count 10-15 trucks within a mile of my house, all deer hunting. In my area, thats not even close to being accurate. The P&Y might be, but the hunter # is WAY low IMO.

D&DH. The article is based on "real world" hunting v. deer "farms" (and QDM type communes)and the disparity of each. The title is 'Scout Smart'.....and the stats are used to reinforce why doing that is so important to succesin the high hunter density areas.

Not too much "holy grail" stuff in there (re: the actual scouting techniques).....but those stats just jumped out at me.

BBM.....I woud "think" (though I don't KNOW) they're taking into account "huntable" (by any other account) sq. mi. tracts.....whether hunting is actually "allowed" there, or not.

For every instance of the numbers you cite.....you probably have THOUSANDS of sq. mi. of land that is otherwise legally "huntable"....but no one has permission to hunt.

That's just my thinking, though.

In my area, thats not even close to being accurate.
Edit** - BBM I missed that statement, earlier. Your observations only ADD to the density issue. I don't doubt YOUR scenario is likely MORE the "norm" in PA, from what I've heard.

I believe this is based on bowhunting?

Thats the things about stats, there are always extremes. I'm probably in one of the most heavily hunted areas of IL, and even in bowseason, I would say its more like 5-6 hunters per square mile, on the weekends anyway. Interesting stuff, though.

I think the D&DH "Hunters Almanac" publishes the full list each year?

Now I know why for my 8 or so deer hunting trips to Michigan Ive only seen Does and the biggest buck I've seen 5 pt. and his rack is on my wall.

1 in 5,166, looks like I won't be winning the big buck contest here this year!

Take into account that those PA numbers, can be skewed some. The central part of the state is very sparse with much less pressure. Go to the burbs on each end & your hunter/sq mi, probably doubles. [:@]
