Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
Did anybody happen to watch this dweeb shoot the Cape Buffalo in the right nostril last night. I've seen him make more bad shots with a bow than even Jackie Bushman. And the thing that kills me is that every time that he makes one of these terrible shot it's always " Well I had my pin set at 30 yards and the animal was only 20 yards away so I shot high". He had to shoot this buffalo at least 1 foot high and says that his pin was only 10 yards off what does he think that everyone is as stupid as he is. I will never watch this dork again. And at the end of the show he says that he will be hosting 2-3 shows next year so that's 2-3 that I won't watch.

RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
did he find it ?

RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
I see a lot of guys on T.V. that must think the viewer are dumber than a rock. Uncle Ted is really bad for that as well. I don't know how many times I have seen place a terrible shot on an animinal, no recovery footage of that animinal and then talk about how great the shot was. What I don't understand is the people that are hiring these guys to host a show. You say Phil Phillips is going to be hostage 2-3 new shows next year? Have they not seen what his shows are like?
|
RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
I couldn't believe that shot either... It was crazy! Put the animal down quick, but my lord... what was he thinking.
You are right Kickin... they never show the track job on these gut shot deer, etc. |
RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
ya i saw it[&:]
|
RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
No it didn't come even close to kill the animal. After the shot him and his guide ran the animal into a swamp and he shot in again, coming straight at him, with the other arrow still sticking out of his nose. He must've hit the heart on the second shot because blood was shooting 2 feet out of it's neck.
|
RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
Yep, I saw the show, never knew who he was until then and I'm glad, I wasn't missing anything... just another yahoo with a bow! Did you see the very long shot he made on the big buck? It was standing broadside, he shoots the arrow is in flight for ever, the deer turns and it hits it in the neck coming straight on! Pitiful, he got lucky as can be! No doubt the reason he took that shot was the pressure to get that bruiser on film... or maybe he's a moron?[:'(] Thats the exact reason that long shots are a no-no in my book!;)

RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
Phil Phillips is a first class guy. He used to guide for elk around where we hunt in CO and long story short he has always been very kind before and after he got his big break with Scent-Blocker. Everyone makes excuses for why they missed... something about casting the first stone comes to mind;)
I do think that TV personalities should be upfront and honest, but let's also try to remember that we are all human and therefore prone to error. |
RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
I'm not trying to make excuses for the guy, but damn people a 1,200 lb cape buffalo was running at him full bore. Yea the shot sucked but seriously if that happened to most of us on here i bet we couldnt make the shot either. I would probably be changing my pants after that!;)The second shot put him down in seconds.

Yea nice nostril shot crack lick. How far off do you have to be to hit a cape buffalo in the snout? Nice shooting Tex.

RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
So let me make sure I understand this.... he shot a Cape Buffalo in the snout with an arrow... which obviously did likely little more than shave a few nose hairs and really sour its mood.
So it goes into the swamp to blow its nose and they follow it (as law requires in most African countries) and in typical Mbogo fashion it charges. And this dude shot (and killed before being killed himself) the same Cape Buffalo WITH A BOW???? Its no mean feat of cool nerves with a rifle but a bow.... no way! I don't think I can let myself believe it! Is this how it went down? |
RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
yea i saw that and he said he will be hosting two more shows of which i forget which ones he said maybe one was a cabelas show or something? i cant remember but hey guys hes a "COWBOY and there aint nothing thats gunna slow him down" LOL that cracks me up at the beginning of his show.

RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
That must have been a rerun. I think I saw it last fall. Yup, a terrible shot no doubt. The thing that puzzles me, I'm not sure, but I think he used to be a tournament shooter and was pretty dang good. I might be wrong but I think so. I hate his weasel type beard and that stupid hat, but he isn't all that bad on everything. I don't like him but do believe he was a world class shooter at one time. He should speak the truth though. That was some kind of bad miss. The guide must have thought..."HOLY Crappolla".

RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
He should speak the truth though. Thats the one reason you and I will never host a TV hunting show;) |
RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
did his big hat get in the way of the shot????
Phil never was with Robinson Labs, Scent Blocker. I think your meaning Scent Lok. |
RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
I just have to ask.. so is his full name Philip Phillips.. cause if it is.. it's a stupid name.:)

RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
First off I dont know anyone who is perfect. There are a lot of hunting shows that wouldnt even have showed this hunt. Lets see you make this shot at a cape buffalo coming straight toward you. Then chase after an injuried buffalo to finish him off with a shot once again when he is coming right at you. The animal went right down on the second shot. Easy to bash sitting on the couch watching it on TV....
|
RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
I didn't see the show but what happened on the first shot? Was it charging then or standing broadside? These are mean tough animals. My dad went to Africa in the 70's when he was working for BenPearson. They filmed the hunt and made a movie. When they shot theCape Buffalo it turned into complete chaos. The charge was on!

RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
Prior to reading this thread I read the one about whether we've missed more shots high or low, and another on missing the first shot and then connecting with followups, six pages total........hmmmmm
|
RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
I admit when I saw that I figured it was what he was trying to do. To brain him or something. Like shooting a grizzley in the eye socket.
Where exactly should a person shoot a charging cape buffalo with a bow? That's just a bad scenario all around. |
RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
People I'm not trying to insult the man's character or to say that I've never made a bad shot but you can bet that I would never show it on a nationally televised show touting what a great hunter that I am.
|
RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
Phil Phillips is from Montrose, Colorado - he has the local archery pro shop in Canon City do his bow tuning. Great guy. One of the things I admire about him is that he doesn't seem to do anywhere near as much editing as the other bow hunting celebrities. He leaves in the bad shots - missed opportunities - even when it makes him look kinda foolish. It would be so easy to cut out the bad parts, sneak in some footage from another hunt, and make yourself look good in the eyes of the world. Phil won't do that.
|
RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
Yep...the show was about looking back at his five most memorable hunts. These hunts included a whitetail that was shot in the neck from 50+ yards after it whirled around as the arrow approached...a cape buffalo that was shot in the nose!...and a wounded grizzly bear (arrow) that he and another guyended up finishing offwithtwo shot guns.

RE: Phil Phillips!!!!!!!!
Lets see. Even I am questioning the shot/shots from what most of you are talking about in the thread. Lets try to question what his body was going through before he made the shot. A cape buffalo rushing at you is gonna create a large amount of stress. Stress has a funny way of closing down vision, increasing heart rate pumping adrenalin into your system, shutting down fine tuned motor skills needed to make an accurate shot, and creating sloppy gross motor movements. And lets not forget, decision makingis extremely effected. Yes the shot was stupid, but did he do it out of selfdefense, because it was the only thing he could think of at the time? Nobody knows. I would geuss if a huge monster like that was coming after meI would be running away, or emptying my 45-70 into it like he should have been. I beleive hunting this animal with a bow is idiotic, but some guys need to learn the hard way. I didn't see the show. And from what it sounds like I would turned it off as well. I am not defending the guy, just trying to put in perspective what may have made his odd decision.
If I recall agreat huntingpersonality was assualted bya cape buffalo on a hunt over there. That was with a rifle.I think he died andI wish i could remember his name. His friends when back on a hunt to commerate him. Was on TV. Just cant remember the name. Just a thought. Justin |
