Dubbya,

What Unit are you going to in Colorado ?

Welcome to the forum. We drew tags in Wyoming last year, this year we're buying OTC tags in Colorado. I'm not expecting the trip to be like it was last year, but I still can't wait.

I think we're going to 17 and 18. Unfortunately, we'll be going in blind (sort of). We know a guy that goes there every year and does pretty well, so we're going with him... we'll see what happens. When they changed it to where you have to draw in certain areas, the only two that any of us were familiar with got axed.

I am fortunate to be a Wyoming native and hunt elk every year. Look forward to it every year as well. I am now after 20 years with a rifle going to try bowhunting. Can't wait for some even more close encounters and better September weather than late October weather to hunt in.

Thus being my first post on this board. Great place.

Welcome! Where in Wyo are you from? I was born in Worland and grew up in Gillette... I go back several times every year.

I was raised in the Southwest in Kemmerer. After leaving Wyoming for the military I am now back and call Laramie home.

I did'nt draw New Mexico or the unit I was wanting in Colorado. I had 5 points going into the draw but that was not enough.

This will be the first year I haven't hunted the Gila area of New Mexico in 6 six years, but the landowner permits have just gotten too high and since I didn't draw........

I will OTC elk while also carrying a deer tag (2nd choice undesubscribed unit) between Crested Butte and Aspen.

Elkhuntinut, congrats on some fine critters and welcome aboard.

It sure is hard to beat elk hunting during the September rut, bow in hand. They are an amazing animal to try and kill with a bow.Nothing better imo to fill the freezer with either.Good luck to you on your continued success. I cant wait for Sept to roll around here in Idaho. Big country and some good friends to join me.

Very nice area in Colorado. Hunted around the Leadville area for a few days about 4 years ago. I have been doing a drop camp hunt around Montrose, Colorado.

I had a friend who drew an Arizona 7E tag, and my other friend is buying a house so right now I am solo.

Hate driftin' out by myself, but will do that before I stay home in September.

Welcome to the forum.
I am going for a OTC tag in unit 18, this will be my first Elk hunt. I am also going DIY.
I have been reading everything there is on Elk hunting, and I do not think that September will get here fast enough. I just want to be out htere in the wild with those bulls sounding off all around me, I do not care if I get an arrow off at one.

Looking forward to your future posts.

Rick

I agree with your post craitchky. It is amazing to go out and have them bugle all around you and being in the mountains that they live in. The last two years in WYO they were still bugling during rifle season. The bull pictured above came out in an aspen grove with about 30 cows and calf and I watched them for about 45-50 minutes feed before I even shot. I got caught up in all the action and enjoyed watching them more than killing one. Then it started getting dark so I squeezed one off.

I have had some amazing elk encounters that I will never forget but if what they say is true I think I will like the encounters during bow season even more.
