Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
This is a thread created for those who truly want to learn more about the Rage Broadhead, as everytime someone wants to inquire our knowledge, it turns into a long debate that they probably cant even understand.
I want this to be an Informative thread for those who want to know more about them from the people who have USED them. Good or Bad. If you havent used this head, Dont come looking for a fight... not that it would ever happen;). What I'd like to see in this thread is....No debating. 1.Thatyou have propeled a Rage BH at a living animal. 2. 2-blade or 3-blade 3. What poundage was being drawn? Arrow weight? 4. How far was the shot taken from? 5. Were you successful in your attempt? 6. How far did the animal retreat before expiring? 7. Your overall opinion of the Rage Broadhead. 8. Pics if possible ![]() Maybe Buckmasters first sticky?:D[8D] |
RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
I've killed 1 deer with a Rage.
2-blade @ 65lbs. on a 350grn arrow. went apx -200yrds with a high lung shot from 36yrds. I will be using them again in the future. |
RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
I give this about 1/2 to 1 day before it's crashed.,......but here goes.
1.Thatyou have propeled a Rage BH at a living animal. Yes. I took either 6 or 7 whitetails with the head in '07. 2. 2-blade or 3-blade 2 Blade 3. What poundage was being drawn? 66#'s 4. Were you successful in your attempt Honestly? Yes and No. I have an "unknown". I hit but did not recover a deer using this head, last year. I won't say whether I think it lived or died. I don't have any way of truthfully knowing. 5. How far did the animal retreat before expiring? Anywhere from 0 yds to over 100....and anywhere in between. It had little to do with the BH and more to do with the hunter, though. 6. Your overall opinion of the Rage Broadhead. It's the best BH on the market....IF it's shot out of the right setup. It's NOT for everyone. |
RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
I have taken 4 WT Deer with the Rage 2 blade, with bows ranging from 61# - 72#, arrow weights from 340gr.- 390gr. 2 deer traveled approx. 30 yards, 1 deer went 50 yards and the other went a whopping 10 yards. This head produced the best blood trails I have ever seen! I will be using The Rage again this season!

I have shot two turkeys with them 2. 2-blade or 3-blade Two blade 100 grain 3. What poundage was being drawn? Arrow weight? 67 pounds,,, i have no idea  4. How far was the shot taken from? ??? 30+ ??? and 18 yards 5. Were you successful in your attempt? yes, two fold 6. How far did the animal retreat before expiring? ??? 100 yards??? and 20 yards 7. Your overall opinion of the Rage Broadhead. love them,, love the flight of them, they leave a large hole. just gotta check them once in awhile to make sure they have not opened up. |
RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
Taken multiple groundhogs in the past few weeks with the same Rage 100gr. 3 blade head. Each one looked like it had digested a hand grenade.
Last fall I killed 2 mature does with the 3 blade. Both shots were between 25-35 yards, both well-placed shots. 1 shot was a clean pass-through, the other down to the fletching. Neither went over 60 yards. Both dumped an incredible amount of blood aswell. Im using a PSE MachX set at 68#. Easton Axis 400 29.5in. arrows. And I will be using these broadheads this fall. Im a firm believer in shooting the best possible equipment money can buy...Its my responsibility. |
RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
great idea, hopefully people dont come in here and start stating opinions on rages!

RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
6. Your overall opinion of the Rage Broadhead. It's the best BH on the market.... that's about themost assinine jibberish I've read on here in a long time. |

If you havent used this head, Dont come looking for a fight... |
RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
I took numerous deer with the 2 blade! Actually used the same head 2 times on 2 different deer! They perfom as advertised! They are awsome. i will not however be using them this year as my set-up is a little light for a 100gr. tip! Only downside to this head is the $$. Also if your worried about the head opening in flight cause you don't take the time to check your equipment those little rubber bands used for braces on teeth work well as a back-up. just stretch it over the head and you will be fine! Note...this is not a necesaty if you watch what your doing! don't shove your broadhead down in your quiver, and double check them as you do all your equipment before use!

RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
I haven'tand don't usethe head so can't comment on how they work.
If you get Bow and Arrow hunting magazine Chuck Adams did his article on arrow penetration this issue. He has made no bones in the past, or in the beginning of this article about his dislike of mechanical broadheads. He goes on to say at the end that a slip cam design like the Rage, specifically mentions the head, is different and doesn't waste its energy on penetration, won't cartwheel and penetrates very well. He had nothing bad to say about the head, pretty sound endorsement there. |
RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
I have an "unknown". I hit but did not recover a deer using this head, last year. I won't say whether I think it lived or died. I don't have any way of truthfully knowing. |
RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
Hey folks
I've been real skeptical on switching from my muzzys, but I'm thinking about giving the rage 2-blade a try this fall. My only concern is that my general only puts out about 62 foot pounds of KE. Would this be a concern of you? I don't care how big of an entrance hole I get if my setup won't consitantly punch exit hole too. |
RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
1. That you have propeled a Rage BH at a living animal.
3 deer. 1 doe, 1 7 pointer, and 1 8 pointer 2. 2-blade or 3-blade 2 blade 3. What poundage was being drawn? Arrow weight? 70lb, I'm thinking around 350 grains +/- 4. How far was the shot taken from? 22,26,34 yards respectively 5. Were you successful in your attempt? killed all three deader than door nail, the further one ran approx. 67 steps. 6. How far did the animal retreat before expiring? no further than 67 steps all within sight 7. Your overall opinion of the Rage Broadhead. Customer service is 2nd to none, had one head that the allen screw stipped out after i'd harvested the 8 pointer. I sent 1 broadhead back, and they supplied me with a brand new pack of 3 including a practice head. This head will deliver the damage, my dad's a huge montec lover, he and I both will be carrying these heads this season. 8. Pics if possible the only deer I had a picture of was the one I posted of the doe in the snow. She was covered in blood from the exit wound all the way to her hing end. It was actually a little gorrie, my 7mm mag didn't do as much damage on a smaller doe that I shot in rifle season. |

shouldn't this thread be in the product review section? I definately understand the reasoning either way

RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
I aint here looking for an argument either way.I do sell the heck out of the Rage heads and if I were to shoot an expandable (I won't) the Rage would be of serious consideration.
But....... isn't this thread going to be a little bit one sided? Most people that use any head and put it where it is suppose to go are going to sing its praises most of the time. |
RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.

4 whitetails withthe ragein '07. 2. 2-blade or 3-blade 2 Blade 3. What poundage was being drawn? 70#'s 4. Were you successful in your attempt(s) Yes 5. How far did the animal retreat before expiring? 30,50,30,50 yds. All 4 died within sight and 3 of the blood trails were visible from the stand 6. Your overall opinion of the Rage Broadhead. Excellent. |
RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
I disagree, BigBulls.
I've chimed in on a few threads where I didn't have exactly "glowing" comments for the equipment being reviewed. But I've only done so if "I" have used the product. |
RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
Shot a doe with a two blade rage the first year they came out. Shot was 10 yard and hear is the heat gette'r, she was facing me. I know but believe it or not I practice these shots and she was close, and I was on the ground. Arrow went in here throat, came out her belly near the rear leg. I cut the windpipe, jugular, and one lung. She traveld about 15 yards. Huge blood trail. Head was in perfect shape. Bow was set at 72lbs and I am pushing right at 73lbs of KE with that setup. I will also include a link to my website and a review of the Rage two blade for those interested. Just scroll down the page and you will see it.

Just scroll down the page and you will see it. http://www.broadheadtests.com/NEWHEADS.html I've shot 6 bucks and a doe with the Snyper. Devistating holes, devistating. 1. Not the Rage but the Snyper 2. 2 blade. 3. 68ish 4. From 20 yards out to 41 yards. 5. Yes, (not all) 6. None made it 50 yards. 7. Not the Rage but the same designed Snyper. Awesome head. If I didn't use the Snyper, I'd use the Rage. 8. Available all over the web. ;) When I first came to HNI back in '98 I think, I was antimechanical and would get in heavy debates with many but I feel I was warranted as many of the original mechanical heads, SUCKED. Today, there are some quality mechanicals, (not all) but the 2 blade Snyper and Rage and 2 quality heads. I've never heard of any failures on the Snypers and the few I heard on the Rage I consider pilot (user) problems, not head problems. (minus the one design flaw that was recalled by Rage). Until I have a bad experience with the Snypers I'll always use them. I've used many fixed blade head misfurtunes that were in no way design flaws (I assume other than smaller holes than the Snyper) but I've had zero issue so far with Snypers. (Same design as Rage). Again, I apologize if I overstepped my reply as I haven't used the Rage but I certainly would as the Snyper is the same head, slightly smaller, less expensive but same design. |
RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
I shoot a 125gr Montec, I have always heard fantastic things about the Rage 2 blade and I'm about to buy a pack, Threads like this are great because expiration time is very important to me.
I would like to hear something from someone that HAS shot an animal with the Rage 2 blade, that was not satisfied with its performance.... and unless someone can give me a descent reason not to buy this head, I won't do it, If I get some kid that just doesn't like it cause his buddies don't like it, I'm definitely buying them. Thanks for the info!!!!! |
RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
I haven't shot any animals with mine yet but I bought a pack of Slick Trick mag and a pack of Rage, Thinking I'm definitely going to use the Tricks for hunting this year but wanted to play with the rages just to see what all the "rage" was about these broadheads. I honestly have to say I will be using the Rage as my primary head this year and I might also carry the Tricks as well. I might just buy a few more packs of the Rage heads instead though.:)
I also have to add I was very skeptical of using mechanicals before I started playing with these babies. |

63# bow with 430 grain arrow
Rage 2 blade cut 2 ribs going in and 1 going out dead deer 65 yds away from the scene of the crime Comments: Entry and exit holes were impressive to say the least. I have a good friend and mentor who is a very experienced and successful bowhunter who uses Muzzy's exclusively. Hewas with me and saw firsthandthe damage from the Rage. It was the second kill he'd seen that season from the Rages. Impressed him enough that he wants to try them this upcoming season. |

RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
Shot one doe last year with the 2-blade,huge entry hole. I did't get a pass through the arrow hit the opposite foreleg. I shoot 60#, the shot was about 15yds the deer went about 80 at a full gallop. I have not had problems with them opening prematurely, but I'm pretty good about checking them all the time. I shot the actual BH many times at targets with no misfires. I do use RickJames suggestion of putting a small orthodontic rubber band on the cross junction, this helps keeping them locked in and out of the quiver. During practice I noticed you can get about 3 shots from an o-ring but I would use a new one every time when hunting.

1 rio grande tom turkey
2 blade 60 pound martin bengal (26 inch draw) Shot at 15 yards Was successful, went 5 yards and never twiched after shot straight through the thick ole chest boneof a turkey (facing me) Abolsutely loved the head but unfortunately is not legal for big game in oregon....and if i wasnt shooting steel force id be using these for turkey still.... |
RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
I shot one buck (10 pt) and one doe last year with the 2 blade Rage. I was shooting 65 pounds of draw weight at 28" with a 380 grain arrow. Both arrows passed thru and left the two best blood trails I have ever seensince I started bowhunting. The hits were both good. The buck made it about 60 yards and the doe about 50. BothFell in sight of my treestand. The doe was shot at 15 yards (ranged) and the buck at 22. I will be shooting the2 blade Rage again this year without question. Two other bowhuntersin our camp also shot bucks using thetwo blade Rage. Both were collected in short time with excellent blood trails and the deer falling insight of the hunters. I dont know all the information on their set ups but both were very pleased with the broadhead.

RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
I was given a practice Rage head by a friend to fool around with.... must say it did fly very nicely. Although it rattles quite a bit. I suspect its just because its the practice blade.
From a design standpoint, they appear to be about as solid a make as any expandable around. Don't know how they couldn't open. I've been on hunts and trailed deer shot by them... but have not flung one at an animal... so I'll just leave it at that... since I guess first hand observations don't really count as first hand shooting. |
RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
Anyone used these on hogs? I am going on a hog hunt in March and I am think about using the Rage 2 blade. I am a little cautious about using a mechanical with that large of a cutting diameter where penetration is probably the most important issue. I shoot a 60# 82nd Airbourne at 29 1/2".

RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
Best broadheads I've ever used. Won't ever change. They put the deer down quick. The 3 does my dad and I have killed so far have all ran under 40 yards. One even dropped almost right on the spot.

RE: Official HNI Rage Broadhead Thread.
1. 2008 - I have shot one buck and one doe
2. Both 2 blade 3. 60lb bow, 434 grain arrow and 28.5" dl (s/b 60.25 ke) 4. Buck at 22 yards and the doe at 27 yards 5. Success on both 6. Buck went approximately 70 yards and dropped the doe 7. Buck was shot through both lungs - arrow went through both sides but was not a complete passthrough. When the deer took off broke the arrow off with 12" left inside cavity. Blood was small dropsfor the first 20 yrds, then tree side was covered with blood (wasn't sure how that got there but after recovery realized the deer likelyblew the blood through nose) another 15 yards of small drops and then found 4" size blood spots for about 10 yards and then turned into huge pools of blood. What happened was the blood filled up on the exit hole between the rib cage and hide b4 it started flowing out. Shot the doe and went through the lungs and must have hit opposite shoulder, dropped the deer. However there was 2/3 of the arrow still hanging out with bright red and bubbly blood slowly flowing out (cavity was filling up). Deer was still alive (struggling for 45 minutes - I learned that even with a lung shot need to give the deer time to die and its no fun to watch). I finally shot it in the head with a Rage to put it down - went through the skull on one side no problem. Both arrows pulled out with no resistance what so ever. No head or blade failure on all three broadheads. My conclusion is that Rage produces incredible holes but the penetration isnot close toa fixed broadhead - with a typical kill shot, I have complete passthroughs with fixed broadheads (shoot Thunderhead 100gr). So the dilemma I am struggling with right now iscontinuewith the Rage 2"wide hole and takea 50/50 chance of creating an entry and exit hole or go with a 1 1/4" hole withfixed broadhead and almost always havetwo holes. I am now looking at the 1 1/2" mechanicals now that the blades lock into place upon impact. I did not like on the doe the blades just flopping around. I am looking at the new Spitfire Pros, G5 Tekan IIs and really like the double-sided blades on the Smoke broadheads but I am hesitant as they seem almost to mechanical. 8.Buck pic (shows entry hole) attached but no doe pic ![]() |

2 doe, 2 bucks 2. 2-blade or 3-blade Two blade 100 grain 3. What poundage was being drawn? Arrow weight? 64 pounds, 350ish 4. How far was the shot taken from?
