Thermacell your opinions

I recently just picked up a thermacell a couple of weeks ago for early season bowhunting. Just wondering everyone's experiences with them good or bad.

THANKS!!!

When we were in Canda last year the black flies and mosquitos were terrible. A guy in our camp had brought one and he would set it just outside the camp door in the evenings, etc and it did a decent job but it certainly wasn't the miracle worker they tell you it is. I still got bit A LOT but it was less than without it.

Apparently its the best thing since oxygen...

I've never used one, though.

Works really well at repelling mosquitos but it does have a slight odor, not sure if this repels deer as well. Young stupid ones may not notice it but I'll bet the older wiser bucks may be alarmed and avoid you. You'll never know cuz you won't see them.

I won't go in the early season woods without mine. I have bought my wife one for around the house. Greatest thing since sliced bread.

I think Dukemichaels said it best when he said (and I paraphrase)...

"I" can smell it.....so I KNOW the deer can.

That was enough, for me.;)

RE: Thermacell your opinions

Yes but does it alarm them? A wise old buck, probably. But the alternative is swat mosquitos and move a lot or not hunt! I'd use it early when you need it and not expect to see any large old bucks, maybe take a young doe early.

I have one and love it. I don't go into the woods without it now. The scent is noticable but barely. It will put off a much greater scent if you reuse an unfinished repellant pad. I always go into my tree stand with a new one. I throw the unfinished ones in my tackle box and use it when I go fishing!

I bought one about 3 years ago for hunting the bottoms areas in S. Illinois for early season and it worked great. Now it does give off an odor but I figure like most hunters I hunt the wind and usually give up that direction anyways so Id rather give off alittle odor on my downwind side instead of doing the bug slap dance all evening in the stand. Just hunt the wind like you should anyways and youll be fine.

I bought one last fall and started using it. I hunt a lot of riverbottoms and wetlands, and I will not go back without it. It does not work while you are walking, nor does it work well while there is much wind. It has to be pretty calm for the fumes to surround you and work. I think it says this on the package though. I've literally gotten to my stand and while walking had mosquitoes covering my arms, the big dark black ones. As soon as I got to my tree before I started climbing, I lit the thermocell. I am not exagerating when I say 2 minutes tops, therewere no mosquitoes in my face or on my skin. I am a firm believer.

RE: Thermacell your opinions

I'm sure there are places in the country that have Uber-skeeters that will eat through a man's clothing. That being said....I hunt NC in early Sept....and I don't see the need for one. No matter what the temp.....I'm covered from head to toe. I wear long sleeves, always.....I wear gloves...and a facemask (Under Armour). Besides the annoying bit of "buzzing" I get, occasionally....I figure they're not penetrating my gear.....so I don't pay them much mind.

That's the "other" reason I won't use one. I don't feel a need for it.

txjourneyman 06-09-2008 02:34 PM

RE: Thermacell your opinions

Here in Tx they penetrate the light clothing required to withstand the early season heat. I have killed 5 deer while using a thermacell. If they smell it they don't seem to mind. I have also killed several feral hogs. I will keep using one in early season. If I didn't have the thermacell I'd be so miserable from bugs and heat I wouldn't bother going. I can put up with one but not both.

I will not early bow hunt without one. And like someone said earlier. If you hunt the wind why worry about what little scent it puts off. I promise you even with all the scent eliminating processes that we go through. The scent we put off will overcome the scent a thermacell puts off.

RE: Thermacell your opinions

IMO they are excellent for turkey season, camping and very early season if im just trying to score a Doe and dont worry if i get busted. I can also smell it myself so the deer surly can. They do work though!!
foot note::: I used it several times in the early season with Does around, and did not get busted. may have been saved by lifting thermals but then again, who knows.

I have used one hunting in 100 degree temps in SC. It seemed to have worked although I did have bugs bothering me, I guess they would have been worse without it.

They work great.Yesdeer will beable to smell it just like everything elsenot natural to there surroundings. Will itscare them and will they tolerate it is the question.

RE: Thermacell your opinions

I've only used mine once so far in turkey season and wasn't impressed. I really hope that it works better come fall. There was a TINY breeze blowing, but if that's all the wind it takes to make it ineffective, I may as well toss mine in the trash because I never geta truly dead calm day.

I also figure that if they can smell the TC, they have already smelled me anyways so I've lost.

I have used one for he last couple of years, and I will not hunt the early season without it. I dont know if the deer can smell it or not, but is better than sitting there for hours swatting bugs.;)

RE: Thermacell your opinions

I can only give you my personal experience. I am not a Florida native so when I go spring turkey hunting or fall bowhunting, Iam not a lover of the heat and bugs. The places I go hunting is very swampy. The bugs are off the chain. Last spring I walked almost1 1/2 miles in and forgot to turn my thermacell on until I satdown. It takes about 3-5 minutes for it to start working. Those were the nastiest minutes of my life concerning bugs. Swarms ofmosquitoes tore me up. As soon as the thermacell heated up, the bugs started thinning out. In about 5 minutes they were mostly all gone and it stayed that way for the duration of my hunt. Would notgo into the swamps without one.

AMEN!
I bought one last year and used it here in Pennsylvania when it was unbearably "HOT" during archery season and it worked great. The Thermocell is usually talked about on this site 5 to 6 times a year and you basically ALWAYS hear the same things about it. As for the odor it puts off, when you fart in your treestand it not only stinks, it makes noise and that doesn't affect the deer does it?????.........No noise here......lol

I bought one and used it in the swamps of FL on a turkey hunt. It worked great. When we were walking the mosquitos were terrible and HUGE!

Look for past postings about the Thermacell, out of all the ones that I've ever read this is the first negative post, Rybo, you need to give it another chance. In my experience it works in a light breeze as well as while walking slowly. If your walking with a purpose it wont work but I'm usually walking slowly in the woods. Here in Florida you'll get bit right through a Bugtamer suit, not to mention the fact that I can't see through my peep with the facemask on. These things work great.

I have used one.. I do like it but i agree that if I can smell it then the deer can too, and I can smell it. Used it bear hunting in Canada and didn't get a bear.. Nuff for me honestly...

But it does work well. I use mine fishing, camping, late season turkeys and have used it for shooting does but I may try a blind for early season this year to keep away from the skeeters. I have a creek bottom in So IL that you can't hunt early without, but neversee thegood bucks at that timeeither..

Well...When I'm bear hunting in Quebec they save my life....I swear by them.....I have never had the thermacell scare the bears...but the Skeeters and black flies run! A Must.....

I've alwas wondered if those things worked and with all the positive feedback it looks like one will be in my back pack come OCTOBER 1st.As far as the scent I guess time will tell it can't be any worse than the smell of sweat from the walk in.It is impossible not to sweat with temps in the 80's and 90's, not to mention the 90% humidity here in the south.

RE: Thermacell your opinions

I can tell you hunting in the south when the deer season opens in mid sept. I don't care if the deer can smell it because I couldn't hunt without it. It's so hot you can't wear enough close to keep them from biting you but I can hunt in shorts and a long sleeve camo Tshirt with the TC. Whoever invented it should get a nobel prize because he saved the early season for me.

its amazing what the thermacell does, one night i ran out of butane for it on my bear hunt and in those couple hours my face was bitten numerous times, in fact my left ear is misshaped from all the swelling lol but when i had the thermacell running, i did not get bitten a single time
