what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
I have a 5 pin sight. I currently have the first three pins sighted in at 20, 30, and 40. What I want to know is what range oppotunity do you most often find yourself at with game? I've heard 30 yards is the ideal or most common but let me know what range you usually try to get your game to come into. Maybe even your furthest and closest encounters.

RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
I prefer to shoot them at 15yds or under. Most of my kills have been around 12yds average
|
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
The closer thebetter, not one to brag about a long shot or impossible shot. I just want them on the ground.
|
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
20-25 yards.

RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
I am real picky with the shots that I take on whitetails probably between 15-35yd range is where I prefer. Hog hunting and what not, I will tend to stretch to the 15-50yd mark with them, don't really have a rhyme or reason thats just whatI will generally do....However I will set most of my stand sites expecting a 20ish yd shot.....

RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
I've heard 30 yards is the ideal or most common However, we've discussed on here before -- though very few people realize it -- that a deer is more prone to "jumping the string" at those distances. Stretch it out to beyond 30, and the same noise that just scared the bejeezers out of that deer at 15 is now more of a curiosity at 34 yards... until the arrow slices through him. Think of it this way: if you're home alone (or you think you are ;)), and all of a sudden you hear a noise -- no matter how muffled it is -- in very close proximity to you, you're more than likely coming unglued. Put that same noise 40 yards away in the house, and you want to know what it is, but you're not peeling yourself off the ceiling this time. Now... having said all that... :)Like Kel, I still prefer them as close as possibly without being too close (because of the shot angle); somewhere between 10 and 20 works just fine for me. |
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
I've heard 30 yards is the ideal or most common My average shot is 12 yards, I figured that out last night. My farthest shot isn't to far, 21 yards. My closest shot is 7 yards on a bear. I was 6' up in a tree. |
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
Between 10 and 25 would be what I would be ordering if I had a choice!

RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
Matter or personal opinion, and the terrain you hunt. But as Greg said, most shots are under 20yds!!!! Now if you're asking about how to set pins, I'll tell you that depending on how FAST your bow is, you may want to try something a little different. 20-30-40-50-60 may be ideal for a guy shooting a 300fps set-up, but for me being in the low to mid 270's, I like 24-32-40-48-55 for my pins. This give me enough room for error that I SHOULDN'T be able to foul things up if I'm a little off on my distance guestimate. Add a rangefinder into the equation, it's still helpful, IMHO, because and arrow drops a long ways between 30-50yds, but in that first 20-24 yds, it doesn't really have that much drop. Some guys like their shots ongame a longdistances because the quieter the noise of the bow going off, the less likely the deer is to move. I personally like them real up close and personal, where Ican hear them breathing.

RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
15-22 yds
|
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
As close as possible.
|
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
I prefer to shoot all mydeer at 20 yards or less, but sometimes thats just not possible. ;)
|
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
I like em 10-15 yds. I think my average is 13yds. Most places I set up I can't even get a 30 yd shot.
|
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
my average is 23 yards closest 7yards farthest 40 yds. I have a 20-30-40-45-50 yd pins I will not shoot a deer that is farther than that its just 2 many things can go wrong at that distance in a tree stand
|
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
As far as deer hunting from a treestand I like them at 20 or less, but no less than about 5 or 7 yards just because the angle gets too steep. On the ground, the closer the better. As long as my arrow can clear the rest I am good:D
|
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
I have have a single pin adjustible sight and have four settings of 20-30-40-50.But dont shoot out to 50 that is for target practice. I like then at about 20 yards but i will shoot a deer at 45 if it is clear.
|
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
I would like to shoot them in the 10-25 yd range. That's where most of my success resides.
My max. is 40 yards. I don't even practice beyond that! |
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
i also like them between 20 to 25 yards ,my money shot as i call it anyhting closer and im letting it walk by till it gets at that distance .I hate close shots i dont want them close to my tree stand just my theory thats all
|
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
I've bow killed 22 deer at 22 yards or less. I prefer about a 17-20 yard shot, and that's what I try to set up.

RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
POINT BLANK:D:DWithin 20 yards!
|
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
the maximum for me is 40 yards because beyond that i cannot see very well and the chances of making a bad shot are quantified. preferably at 15-25yards. i am set up at 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 yards with my bow right now and shoot good at 60 for fun.
|
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
I prefer 20 yards, the arrow really slams them at that distance.
|
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
Anything from 5yd to 30yd and I'm drooling.:)Under 5yd (from a tree) and it's too steep a shot for me tobe sure to impact as much of the vitals as I like toso I have to wait for the deer to move out a little (has happened on several occasions) past 30yd wind and exact yardage (trajectories)start to come into play. I'll take those 30+ yard shots but I'd rather it closer.
|
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
Prefer 10-25, but have taken 3 at just over 30 yards. Pins are set out to 40 yards max.
|
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
15 yards or closer. I will shoot out to 25 yards, but would rather them be under 15 yards.
|
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
15yards or under is what I like. 25yards is my max!

RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
I prefer a 20 yard shot not to close for a steep angle and not to far away
|
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
The deer that come by me are always between about 5 an 20 yards. Thats the way I like it.
I did shoot one a couple years ago at about 25 yards. I practiceout to 40 yards just to make the closer yardage easier. |
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
I have found that most of my shots have been under 20 yards, but if I could choose my shot I would like it to be between 20-25yds,from 20-25ft up a tree the angle is a lot better than say a 10-15 yd shot.
|
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
I like the 25-30 yard action. In my experience, inside 20 yards the first movement of a deer when they hear to bow go off is some type of bodily movement. Extend that distance to 30 and beyond, and the first movement they make is to pick their head up and look in the direction of the sound. By then... it's too late. If my shooting performance dropped off after 20 yards, I'd reconsider that thought... but for now I like a little bit of real estate between us.
|
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
I'll play out to 50 yards under the following conditions...
NoWind, My range finder A relaxed deer in a plowed dirt field:) My 3 year old girl and I ate sausage on a 53 yard doe kill last year... :D:D:D:D:D The luma knock looked awesome flying through the sky....On video? No...and I'm mad about it... |
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
If Iget a choice, I love the close stuff, having them right in your lap, when you can hear them breathing.. 10-15 yards.. especially if and when your hunting off the ground. Before they hear the bow, the arrow is already through them..
|
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
I prefer 35 yards or less.
|
RE: what range do you prefer to shoot game at?
I think out west where I am my typical elk shot on the ground is 20-35 yards. On Muleys it is more like 30-40 yards but depending on the terrain and how pressured the animals are plays a key role.
