I really believe that many of you that believe you can in some way manage the herd are being misled. If you don't have a fence around your area then you have little to no control.
QDM and many other feel good groups exist for no other reason than to make money. Not that thats a bad thing.[:-]
Cars kill more deer in this country than all hunters combined. Cars are not selective, they don't have shooting hours or seasons. That 2.5 year old eight point that you let walk is Buick bait in a heart beat.[:@]
If you really feel the need to send money to some one so that they can tell you what you need to shoot, send it to me,and I will give you my recommendations
Spendmore time in the woods & enjoy your tree time and then you might see what a truly small roll we play in mother natures world.
So Jim, you don't think that hunters play a part in deer management at all??????
Hunters as a group ,of course.

Hunters as individuals , not even in the picture.

Hunters can have an impact on over all deer numbers ,as has been seen in PA ,after 8 years of doe slaughter our numbers are down . Are buck to doe ratios any better ? ...........................last years buck kill down 19 %.
you contradicted yourself there .....

Ifeel our sport would really benefit from people forgetting about the biological aspects of hunting and start enjoying hunting more as a family past time than the competition it has become.
100% agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!! Can I use that in my sig?
I don't see the contradiction . Hunters in mass can have an overall effect on deer numbers, individual deer hunters have very little effect on herd dynamics. But it does make some feel better about what they are going to do anyway.

Everyone is different. I trophy hunt and I also shoot my share of does.
I will have to stop shooting fawns though. I guess it's not politically correct

When will people realize there are different strokes for different folks...

Some people only like taking big bucks.
Others- every doe they can possibly take.
Others- any deer they see.
Others- dont hardly shoot anything just get out to get out.
Others- just take deer depending on their mood that day.
Others- May even flip a coin to decide.

My point is, people hunt for different reasons. Accept it, live with it. Just because one feels that people shouldnt only hunt for mature bucks and should get out and just shoot any deer available and appreciate it. Well, that isn't any different than others telling someone to not shoot young bucks.

Well, here you said they can effect it a little .... before you said a single hunter had no effect ... hense my confusion

It might sound simple, but I see a Hunter as simply a tool for conservation. We as a group assist in the states conservation efforts and they set the guidlines as to what needs killed in order to better help the herd.

If the state makes it a rule that I can only shoot a 3.5 yr old or older deer, then thats what I would do. If they say I should only shoot does thats what I'd do. I have to think that the sates conservationists know a little more thanjoe blow the hunterabout maintaining a healthy herd.

The rub in the rule making comes whenpeople confuse maintaing a healthy herdand maintaining a healthy state revenue from generated from hunting.......

If they consistently take deer ....absolutely .... but most bowhunters do not ... according to the stats ... heck, most GUN hunters don't ..... but they take wayyyyyyyyyyyyy more than bowhunters do .....
