You think he is big enough for a first deer with a bow????

Well?????? I would love to shoot this buck this fall in archery season, but have had several people tell me that I need to let him grow up, but it will be SO HARD to hold off if he walks under my stand this fall, since it is my first deer season as a bowhunter.........:)

RE: You think he is big enough for a first deer with a bow????

There are two responses to this.... and it really depends on what your long term goals are... but all that is speculative without a lot more detailed information.

My attitude is that its your hunt and if you'd be proud to have.... then go have at him!

You answered your question already---You would love to shoot this buck. It is your hunt and you are doing it for your reasons, live to hunt YOUR hunt.

RE: You think he is big enough for a first deer with a bow????

My advice to new bowhunters it to take the first deer you can legally shoot. Just drawing your bow on a deer for the first time (or even the 100th time) unleashes a whole bundle of nerves you've never felt before. Get one down, see how it feels, see how much you'll learn, and see how much you'll love it! Then you'll understand and be more acceptingwhen your pants are suddenly warmas that 170" buck heads towards your stand.:D

RE: You think he is big enough for a first deer with a bow????

Depends on how much meat you want. Really, it doesn't matter what GregH, me or anyone thinks. If he's legal and you like him, shoot him or her. My recommendation to all newbies is to just shoot something to begin with. All I suggest is that it doesn't have spots or milk dripping off it's lips. Just about any adult deer is big enough by most standards. If you have this URGE to be a QDM nutcase, well hell no he's not good enough. If you want to hunt and enjoy the sport, he or his younger brother or sister will do just fine.

RE: You think he is big enough for a first deer with a bow????

SHOOT HIM...in my part of PA that's an awesome buck. This is your first year hunting...it will only add to the passion and get you hooked even more. PS: Never listen to what others have to say about which deer YOU should shoot.

TEmbry 06-02-2008 11:48 PM

RE: You think he is big enough for a first deer with a bow????

If you are happy with him...take him, it is your hunt bro...But I will say this, if you think you will regret it afterwards, don't take the shot. This very reason has kept me from pullin the release on many bucks waitin on the "right one" for my first. Take your first legal doe if you have multiple tags to work out the jitterbugs.

I have held off for a few years now. The first two, I was waiting for a buck to meet my standards. I was strictly not going to shoot a doe, mainly because at the spot I hunted I saw 3 or 4 bucks for every doe I saw. Plus, I had horn envy bad and wanted a buck to be my first deer with the bow, but none came into range that met my standards.

Very well said!!!!

That first bow-kill is like no other kill you'll ever experience, get after it, and don't worry what others want or say, it's your hunt and your hunting experience, not theirs!!!

Any deer for your first deer should suffice.

Practice what you preach! You say it doesn't matter what Greg says, why should it matter what you say? Who really cares if its a fawn. Shoot away and enjoy PF!! By the way David, Greg would be the last person to put someone down for shooting a buck of this caliber. As long as the hunter who is doing the shooting is happy with his animal, no one else has got a right to complain. Greg would be shaking his hand telling him Congratulations!

RE: You think he is big enough for a first deer with a bow????

MY first bow kill was so intense, I can still feel it now. MY firsrt bow kill was on the groundand with out a release which i have been practicing for ever and didn't have any time to practice with out, ( i lost the release in the truck when i was unlouading:) ).

Well anyway I say take him, my first buck wasn't any where near that big. And even my second buck wasn't that big either. Just make sure you try your hardest each year getting a bigger buck. (whichfocuses on not shooting all small young bucks)

I have learned that the moment you really start basing your happiness on what others think you loose something of yourself and will never be fully satisfied. You want him, you take the chance if offered.

Thanks guys. I have no idea if I will see that buck this fall or not, but if he comes within range, you can be sure that I will be drawing on him, along with and decent sized does for the freezer. Yummy.......... my mouth is already watering for some fresh backstrap.......:)

Dude, shoot him. If he'll make you happy, which it sounds like he will then do it. If anyone gives you any flak, give em the finger and look back at your trophy. They'll get the hint.;)

I would have been happy with anything for my first deer. Fawn, Doe, spike, wouldnt matter to me. That buck is a nice buck regardless of how many deer youve shot

Are you serious? That is a hell of a buck! Maybe its just me. but that would be a definite shooter for me any day in my neck of the woods. TAKE him down buddy!

I am still trying for my first bow buck after three years of bow hunting. If he walked under my stand I would do my best to fill the freezer with him.

RE: You think he is big enough for a first deer with a bow????

I just blinked and that is how long it would take me to say HECK YES, TAKE HIM!!Im still looking for my first Bow kill and that buck next to him would be a trophy for me as my first kill. Who was the person who told you to let him grow, A neighbor or someone else hunting the property? Trying to get you to pass on him so they can take him!!!:D:D Good Luck with him, he'll probably be huge this year but any bow kill should be considered a trophy, so I hear and will hopefully experience this year!

Wiaxle 06-03-2008 11:36 AM

RE: You think he is big enough for a first deer with a bow????

1st buck
2nd buck
30th buck

If it gets you going and keeps you coming back, put him/her down......

Don't let someone else tell you what a trophy is, especially bow hunting.
