I hunt antlers. I know you all say you can;t eat them but they do last a life time where the meat only last one year. I am only allowed one deer and if I put in for a B -tag I can shoot an antlerless deer. So I can get 2 with permits and I'll shoot a nice doe and get that under my belt but then I'm hunting the big boy. The peak of the rut is the last week of nov. and thats what I hold out for usually. It would be a pisser to shoot a small buck and then a big boy step out. Its nice to fill a deer tag but to me shooting a small deer is kinda like kissin your own sister, I want to hold out for that big buck so I don't have to lie about.

Tony,

I've just returned from a most excellent hunt in Texas. I am happy to report, I have finally anchored my elusive axis deer. I tried hunting from a treestand this time. All seven previous attempts have been from the ground while spot and stalking. It wasn't fair chase at all. I sat there enduring high tempertures, biting red ants, chiggers, and humidity. I was motionless from sunup until sundown-I pursued nothing. I analysed the situation. The way I saw it, I was hunting just over an acre on this 2500 acre high fench ranch. The ranch possess some of the thickest cover I have ever hunted-anywhere. In my past attempts, I havebeen tested to the extremes. Not this time though. You see, I have an effective range of 45 yards. I established my killing feild (pi x radius squared). Being the proficient artist that I am, if anything veered within my zone, lights out, right? The axis buck, along with his four does, made a fatal mistake. I won.

It's funny, this ambush tactic sure has potential. It sort of reminded me of the way White-tailed deer are hunted back east. Can you imagine? I even killed a big nilgai (blue bull) cow from the very same tree. I made a picture perfect shot from 40 yards on the unsuspecting beast. Two hours later, I witnessed another axis deer slip through the fench like a hot knife going through butter.

PM me your email addy. I will forward the photos. I would sure hate to offend the nay-sayers.

I will be off to Africa in 8 days. I have a list which includes11 targets of opportunity. I've been loosing 80 arrows per day in preparation. I have the X-Force singing!

Cheers my friend

Tag soup for me. I love venison, I am just at a different place right now with hunting. I want to see my herd get better and take better deer. Unfortunately or fortunately in this case, I have some gun hunters as friends that don't feel the same. Needless to say, if I decide to eat tag soup, its usually followed with venison from them.

I would fill my tag, BUT I have eaten my DOE tags when I didn't feel right about filling them due to the number of deer I was seeing. Shooting a small buck (which is all we have anyway) won't affect the herd one bit. Shooting a doe will.
