What's your absolutely best tip?

Let's hear 'em: whether it applies to shooting, tuning or hunting... what's your ONE best tip that would make people envious they'd never thought of it before?

If you've got a couple "one best tips"... that's ok, but the idea is they're singular in nature.

I'll start off ...

When hunting funnels, often times we as bowhunters encounter a couple trails paralleling each other, yet they're far enough away that we can't "cover" them both by placing a stand in the middle. For example, two trails running parallel to each other that are 85 yards apart in the woods; you could split the difference, but a 43-yard shot to either trail is really an iffy proposition. You're going to have to pick one to cover.

If you know which way the deer are coming from, you can backtrack that direction several hundred yards on the trail you can't cover and hangone of yourt-shirts or some socks from a vantage point where the approaching deer are sure to catch its scent. Hopefully, it'll funnel all the deer that day down the trail you're set up on.

Another I heard today...

Take some string wax and put a big glob of it on the e-clips of your axles; it serves a couple purposes: One, it helps to "weathercoat" your axles from inclement weather by keeping moisture from getting down the axle holes in the limbs, and two, you've got a handy supply of wax at the ready to coat your string if you notice fraying or you're worried about sitting in that rain and want some extra protection for your string.

Greg,
If you look at a post I put up recently "one of my hunting spots", you'll notice that the southern deer travel route has a red "X" on it. No one asked what it was for, and I wasn't going to say unless someone did, but it's where, last year, I put up a wooden frame and put a white "T" shirt and a ball cap to"refine my funnel" and makethe deer use the trail I was hunting. Worked like a charm.

Always.....always.....enter the woods very early in the morning.....

When you walk in you will make your presence known...no matter how good you think you are...

Get in early so you can let the woods get back to normal so it can remain calm....When the critters head back to their bedding areas.....you will be a big suprise to them.

Bow tip: Take your bow somewhere where it is real quiet. draw it and listen for any noise. When your shooting you may not notice it but when that deer is close on one of those quiet evenings any noise will surely get you busted.

Second tip: Never admit that you shoot fawns;)

I try to funnel the deer by placing an obstruction in their path. Such as branches. If possible, well b4 season.

Never give up. This goes for hunting, as well as preparation. If there's a will, there's a way. Money is extremely tight, believe me I know. But sweat equity is worth it's weight in gold sometimes. Get out there, get creative, and get it done.

On the hunting end of things....Season ain't over till it's over. Also.....we talk an aweful lot about location around here. I believe I'm a prime example of this.....If you aren't happy w/ your current location, find another one.

I hunted my home area hard for several years, and became positively convinced they weren't there. So, I did a little work, found a new spot, killed a good one the 3rd morning in. It's not going to be handed to you, you gotta go get it. Never give up.

If possable check out the tree you plan to hunt from before the actual hunt. Nothing like climbing a tree early season and a hord of yellowjackets are under the bark:(.

Nor the Chocolate covered peanuts![8D]

If you have limited timeput most of your efforts into hunting the Rut. Hunt all day and stay sharp. Save your best spots for that magical time in Nov., pay attention to everything concerning your scent, and alwaysuse the wind.

Scout your key areas from a distance. If youknow an area where you have your stand, instead of walking down in the area. Scout your areafrom the roads, old roads, creek crossings an etc, that surround it. Check the old roads for tracks, scrapes an rubsheading in to your area toget an idea how many deer are going through there. That way you never disturb your stand area.

Oh yea, rasians do not fall out of the trees an land on the ground in piles.

RE: What's your absolutely best tip?

I believe most of the time mature bucks walk with the wind that is why they always end up circling down wind.
They do not try use 2 senses the same way. My example is if they are walking with the wind they can smell anythingfrom behind them
They can see movement ahead of them. And use their ears for sounds all around them.
Think about when that buck is out lets say 100 yards and you grunt. He comes in maybe 25 more yards straight in and stops looks around and sees nothing.
Something fishy so he circleswhat he cant see but heard so he let that nose work for him. BAM busted game over.
So my tip, keep a creek, stream, lake, or something that might keep him from circling but yet keep him coming in to investigate.
I am sure you have heard this before but its true. Good luck in 08 peoples.

You cant kill a deer if your not in the woods. The obvious isover looked most of the time. "It ain't got no gas in it".

Always pick more than one tree for your climber in an area. Gives you the best chance to play the wind. Or you can just where scent lok :D. Just kidding. And never hunt your favorite hot spot if the wind isn't right. You'll have just wasted all that scouting time you put into it.

bloodcrick 05-10-2008 08:36 AM

RE: What's your absolutely best tip?

Im sure most already do, but im sayin anyway :DI use a climber alot. When im scouting for new areas Im always looking for tree setups as well. Its hard to find that perfect limbless tree so sometimes you just have to settle for what you got. And that means having to trim limbs off so you can get up itin aclimber, SO i offer you this. Go in well before the season to your new found trees, take your climber and saw and get them ready NOW. Especially hunting the early season and having to trim, makes for sweat and unnessary noise. Dont wait till your hunt!! peace out... blood [8D]

RE: What's your absolutely best tip?

-Hunt the wind, and if it is not right, do not hunt that place.
-Shoot your bow, tons.
-Low impact is the key to killing mature deer.
-Scout your ass off, during Feb.-April.
-Have certain spots that you can get to easily. We have certain "low impact" stands that we harvest does out of.
-Hunt as much as you can.
-Record, everything.
-Funnels are a deer hunters best friend.

Take care of all the small details of the hunt prior to entering the woods, being well prepared. That allows you to focus on the task at hand, which is getting to your hunting area quietly.

When shooting a deer that is extremely close from a treestand, aim at the lower 1/3rd of its body or else you will shoot high.

Are you peeking at my notes?
Good advice.
Attention to details will always get you more deer. When I was younger and had more time I was meticulous In my preparation. As I got older and life got more hectic I let things slide. It has cost me some deer.[&o]

1. Choose your blood trail follow-up time immediately after the shot and stick with it. Don't rationalize and follow up sooner after climbing down. Get get a buddy to help if you can. It's almost impossible to wait too longor have too many bright lights.

2. Shoot a Bowtech. Sorry about this one if you're a Hoyt/Mathews/PSE shooter, but switching to my06 Ally has made increased my confidence in delivering lethal shots, this is fundamental and it occurred because of the help/support available here.

3. Pay the extra money for good arrows. They make a difference. I don't if it's mentalor physical but they do make a difference.

4. The power of this forum's collective consciousness is awesome despite the occasional, tiresomebickering.

How about shoot a bow you are confident in? The name on the limbs has zero to do with killing a deer.

When you get down to about two weeks before hunting season, limit your shooting to one arrow per day. I get up early, put on my slippers, go out in the yard and fire one perfect arrow. A broadhead into a broadhead target. Put the bow away and go to work.

I'm a firm believer in the "one shot" practice session, especially closer to the season, or the hunt itself. That buck's only giving you one anyway!:D

I agree completely when you are in, or closer to the season!

I do think that during the off-season is a great time to shot, LOTS. Familiarity breeds success!

What comes out your mouth is key! Not your words but your air. We can do everything to keep down our scent but if you mouth has a funk the deer will know. I think the number one reason we get busted is because our mouths produce a foul oder. I have been looking at some of the stuff to cover my mouth. I brush alot but when you have coffee and other things in the morning it makes a difference.

Have confidence in your ability to make the shot when it presents itself. It will make you a much better hunter.

And continue to practice shooting your bow during the season.

RE: What's your absolutely best tip?

When you're hunting mature bucks (4.5+) the most important factor by far is HUNTING PRESSURE. He's alot more likely to be bedded in a 25X25yd overlooked thicket next to a bypass than the prototypical bedding area that has 3 ladder stands around the perimeter.
---To sum it up, use hunting pressure to your advantage by finding overlooked "sanctuaries." Concentrate your hunting efforts when most hunters aren't in the woods ie: first week of archery, late season and be careful not to overhunt your area.

Brush with baking soda in the morning, and bring a baggie of parsley to chew on during the day. Trust me it works!
P.S. don't forget to floss!!!!!
