My Archery Days Could
Be over.
Been having pain from just below my right ear all the way down through my right shoulder into my right lower arm. The pain finally got to me so I went to the Doctors, after doing a range of motion tests he tells me it looks like I have a herniated (sp) disk in my neck:(and put me on some muscle relaxants, pain meds and anti inflam meds plus some physio therapy. If all is no better in a week or 2 I will have to go see a surgeon and have my neck fused. The Doc said I can all but kiss archery good bye if they have to do fusion as I wont be able to turn my head[:@] I knew all those years of quick head turning to look at lovely young ladies was going to get me[8D] |
RE: My Archery Days Could
Damn Aussie, I hope things work out for ya!

RE: My Archery Days Could
Russ,
That's terrible to hear. Icertainly hope you don't have to have the surgery. Keep us posted on how it goes. |
RE: My Archery Days Could
Sorry to hear that Russ!

RE: My Archery Days Could
I would get a second opinion before doing the fused disc thing. That's a last resort.

RE: My Archery Days Could
hoping for the best! Sorry to hear about your pain. Can you shoot a crossbow?
|
RE: My Archery Days Could
That's a tough one to bite. Maybe archery could still be done, but I'm sure you would have to modify your form and equipement.
Hang in there. |

RE: My Archery Days Could
My dad had a lower back fusion too so I know what you are going through. Hopefully they can relieve the pain with stretching and the muscle relaxants.
I'm hoping for the best for you. |

RE: My Archery Days Could
try a Chiropractor too, before getting surgery.
|
RE: My Archery Days Could
Sorry to hear that, i hope everything works out for the best.
|
RE: My Archery Days Could
Always an x bow. Got to adapt. Hope things work out and you might just figure out a way to still use the bow. Them doc's are always like that.
|
RE: My Archery Days Could
Russ,
I hope things work out... That's a serious-enough situations I think I'd go get some different opinions as well before going under the knife if that could be the result. |
RE: My Archery Days Could
Greg what hunts are you up to this coming seasons? Deer.........etc.......
|
RE: My Archery Days Could
PM sent.
|
RE: My Archery Days Could
RUSS, I hope the treament works so you don't have to go under the knife.I know what you mean about getting older,I am only 45, but I hurt in my joints and back with much more regurlarity than before and it takes me longer to bounce back than just a few short years ago.

RE: My Archery Days Could
Don't sell the bow just yet.
I know at least 2 people that have had fusions in their neck within the last 2 years, and to my knowledge neither have trouble turning their head. I work with one of them and honestly, I don't notice a difference at all. Don't worry about bad stuff until you have to... I'll be praying for ya. |
RE: My Archery Days Could
Sorry to hear this.
I second the chiropractor and /or an osteopath.(sp) It sounds to me like a nerve pinch. Unless the disk is damaged ,you should not need surgery.Diskmanipulation and GOOD muscle relaxers can work very well when no damage is present. Good Luck and I'll say a prayer. |
RE: My Archery Days Could
ORIGINAL: Roskoe I would get a second opinion before doing the fused disc thing. That's a last resort. |
RE: My Archery Days Could
The little feller don't like bone crackers as he calls them...I go on a regular basis for neck problems when I get headaches! The secound opinion and therapy may do some good surgury doesn't sound appealing! If you have surgury think maybe they can add a vertabre and make you taller? That way you can get on the rides at Six Flags and maybe shoot a long bow after you heal up.:D Even if it ends you archery you can still help with valuble advice and work on bows!
|
RE: My Archery Days Could
Get a second opinion if they recommend the surgery. (I work in health care and can't stress the second opinion thing enough)
My orthopedic doctor told me to give up shooting my bow as my shoulder is all torn up. Pfftt... Like that's going to happen. [:o] Good luck! |
RE: My Archery Days Could
I had a neck disc removed and C6-C7 fusion done in Nov. '06.I couldn't hunt that year but was shooting a bow in mid-Jan '07.

The REAL Ausie-guy would have started the thread title with Me, not My...;) 2.) The REAL Ausie-guy isn't a whiner...;) Just kiddin ya Mate, I hope things work out for you for the better. Last fall I found out I have a Spinal Syrinx (look up that defintion to that one)in my neck so I feel for ya.[&o] Oh, and ex-PBR Bullfighter Rob Smetshas 3 vertabre fused and he still shoots a bow...Hehad to adjust his form though because he couldn't turn his head all the way sideways. |
RE: My Archery Days Could
Youll be ok, maybe no thtis year but by next year, just take it easy this year if you have to. ther is always the cross bow way as well.
|
RE: My Archery Days Could
Russell quit yer whining and get to work on that longbow!:D I'll start collecting as many pieces of exotic wood as I can for ya. I'll also look into that belt sander. I may be able to get it for a small donation to the University.

Russ, They're doing amazing things nowadays, don't get cut on until you find a neurosurgeon who respects your concerns and who uses state of the art artificial disks. I just had two disks in my lumbar spine replaced two weeks ago and when it's done healing I'm supposed to have complete mobility. One of the guy's in my shop had two disks in his neck replaced 6 months ago and he has full movement. Good luck buddy and keep your spirits high, I'm sure that things will work out good for you....Mike |
