Reminder - Minerals

This is the time your herd needs minerals the most. Antler growth is in full swing.....and the does will be dropping this month (majority speaking). They use these minerals to help them lactate.

I just went to put a little out.....and they've absolutely been murdering my site.

Just a reminder......;)

Have been putting out the minerals for the past 2-3 weeks already. They're hammering them at every location.

Aren't mineral sites bad for the spread of chronic wasting? ie.....saliva to saliva.....?

Not sure they're even legal here anyway.

peakrut 05-04-2008 11:27 PM

RE: Reminder - Minerals

Not legal in parts of Wi and not at all in IL.

WB Jeff!

I was wondering the same thing, Tim. I've never used minerals of any kind. Any suggestions on what kind to get and where to get them? Anyone??

RE: Reminder - Minerals

For blocks.. I recommend using Whitetail Institute FourPlay.. Generic salt blocks do very little for deeer. Deer just crave the salt to balance the water they intake once they begin eating lush vegetation.

GMMAT 05-05-2008 06:43 AM

RE: Reminder - Minerals

2 parts trace minerals
1 part rock salt
1 part dicalcium phosphate

Where do you get yours, GMMAT? I know I'm sounding ignorant again, but I've never bought any minerals.

I make my own too. I can make about 125-150 pounds for what it cost for one 25 pound commercial bag.

I just replenished my site yesterday and it was absolutely decimated.

RE: Reminder - Minerals

I used to be able to buy all the ingredients at my local tractor supply company. I can't buy trace minerals there, anymore, so I'm going to have to find abother source. I'm assuming I can buy them at any place that deals with cattle products (more on the lines of a farm center). I'll let you know what I find out.

I was mistaken. I can't buy dicalcium phosphate from tractor supply, anymore.

Gotta get a new line on that stuff.

While your at it, don't foreget to put out two mineral blocks with signs... "Bucks" and "Does". This is extremely important so that you feed each sex the correct minerals.

It is that time, thanks for the reminder. I found a natural lick while shed hunting this season. I think ill add extra to it as well.

How often do you replenish your licks?

I try to do mine once a month, but may have to do it more with the traffic I've been getting lately.

Jeff, if you have an Agway near you check there for the Dicalcium Phosphate. That or any feed store should be able to get it for you. I had to order mine last time, but it only took a few days to get it.

peakrut 05-06-2008 06:32 AM

RE: Reminder - Minerals

Do you guys use these minerals all through the season?

GMMAT 05-06-2008 06:37 AM

RE: Reminder - Minerals

No so much in the winter, T.....but I'm sure there are leftovers, there, if they desire.

I just called my southern states ag supplier (thanks, Bry). He told me 2:1 Minerals would be the same as dicalcium phosphate. They have that....and I can get the rest of the ingredients there, as well.

I appreciate the heads-up.;)

RE: Reminder - Minerals

Jeff thanks for the ingrediants. Is 2 gallons of this enough for 1 site as this is the law up in Northern, Wi?
This is only as a attractant and not for growing antlers? *I dont know much about this subject*

thx

I'd put out the max I could. How often can you replenish it?

RE: Reminder - Minerals

That is a very good question I do not know. When you make this stuff does it have a color to it?
I guess......nm I have no idea. I will ask my lady DNR friend that is for sure.

Okay, would someone answer this question - If I walk into a CO-OP, Tractor Supply, Stockdales or a Feed & Seed, am I going to see something labeled "trace minerals"? What minerals are they?

GMMAT 05-06-2008 06:48 AM

RE: Reminder - Minerals

Tractor supply will know what trace minerals is (and it's red). I have no idea what minerals are in there....but you could do a quick search and probably educate us all on them;). They'll also have the salt. They may not have the dicalcium phosphate (mine stopped carrying it).

LittleChief 05-06-2008 07:08 AM

RE: Reminder - Minerals

Thanks, GMMAT. I guess if you've never been around livestock and never used minerals for deer, you just don't have a clue what folks are talking about here.:D

Now why didn't I think of that?[&o] Selenium, Copper, Zinc, and Phosphorous.
