Ok, gas prices are starting to affect my hunting
With gas prices at $3.65 for 87 octane, it is now starting to impact whether I hunt or not. My truck is nearing $90 to fill up and a typical round trip to where I hunt is around $12-$15....a couple of hunts a week and I am spending around $120 a month just on driving to hunt. That is friggin crazy. I know for some of you guys $15 is a drop in the bucket, but for a local government employee such as myself, and my wife being a teacher, this is getting tough! Anyone else having any problems in this regard?

RE: Ok, gas prices are starting to affect my hunting
Brett, i feel your pain. I am in the same boat as you. I question every single trip I take anymore with gas prices like this. it is insane.

RE: Ok, gas prices are starting to affect my hunting
I feel ya man I never sat at home so much! Just imagine if gas prices were $1 a gal. I think the economy would pick up! Does it take a rocket scientist to figure out why people are not out spending money? Cnat afford to drive anymore![:@]Im starting to get pissed off at the whole deal!

RE: Ok, gas prices are starting to affect my hunting
Yep. I dunno what they're trying to prove or do to us, but it's killin me. What's funny is it is all over the news, but the politicians are sure being tight lipped about it. I mean, not a friggin word. There seems to be no end in sight, and nobody important seems to give a damn.
Prices have not only limited my hunting, but it's limited everything I do. We stay home a lot more than we used to, and that alone is affecting our mood. I like to get out and do things, not be trapped at home all the time. |
RE: Ok, gas prices are starting to affect my hunting
Tell me about it.I drive 120+miles round trip to work.[:@]

RE: Ok, gas prices are starting to affect my hunting
Man, that is nothing..........
My Subaru needs 93 octane. Locally it's running anywhere from 4.05 to 4.12 a gallon. The trip to my camp is 225 miles each way........between my turkey hunting and driving to an IBO World qualifier event this weekend I will put probably 600 miles on the car. It's going to cost me roughly $90 just this weekend alone in gas.[:@][&:] |
RE: Ok, gas prices are starting to affect my hunting
Here is my suggestion.
Using a pickup as an everyday car is about done for most of us. Buy a little junker car that gets 30+ miles to the galllon. I spend about 35.00 bucks a week for gas, and I car pool. They money I save goes into a "Gas" fund for trips. Set a budget for Gas for everyday use. Trim that amount in order to start this gas fund. I budget 70.00 dollars a week for Gas, I am currently using around 35.00 dollars the rest goes in my Gas fund, yeah I have a Gas fund[&:] |
RE: Ok, gas prices are starting to affect my hunting
I am along the lines of Germ.
Truck is parked until I need it to tow the camper. I'm driving a little run around car that gets 30-32 mpg. I streamline trips out and about to reduce how much I need to drive. Not really in a position to carpool at the moment. |
RE: Ok, gas prices are starting to affect my hunting
Germ I have thought about getting a junker car, but even dishing out $500 for a crap car is still risky around here as food prices are starting to rise as well. I just feel kind of trapped right now. I even thought about not taking my kids fishing the other day but I just did anyway, just didn't get anything for myself over the weekend which is no biggie.
|
RE: Ok, gas prices are starting to affect my hunting
the other day i filled up and it was 100 dollars! it would have been more but thats as much as a gas station will allow you to pay at the pump! its so friggin crazy, this is seriously what is making the economy drop and it could hurt our nation! why cant them stinking smart scientists create a car that runs off something cheap........its 160 mile round trip to our farm its CRAZY!

RE: Ok, gas prices are starting to affect my hunting
BTW if you want to know how we got to where we are, it's simple.
1998 or 1999 we started a trend, we sold more SUV's and Trucks than Cars;) Now that has changed[&:] Which is why GM and Ford cannot make a dime. They make very little profit on cars, and some they sell at a cost to them[&:] That is what kills them. We did this to ourselves. |
RE: Ok, gas prices are starting to affect my hunting
Same here.Park the truck.Ride the Harley on nice days and limit trips unless its a must.I got 3D shoots for the next 5 weekends and if it wasnt for my friends going and helping out with the gas I dont think I could do it.

RE: Ok, gas prices are starting to affect my hunting
It is getting so bad that a local municipality here in Central PA wants to go to a 4 day (10hrs per day) work week to save on fuel prices. it is insane. I was just starting to get back on my feet after a divorce and being laid off of 6 months and now the gas prices are dragging me down.. I just shake my head. The politicians don't care because they ALL take money from the oil companies in one way or another, either through the lobbies or they have stock in those companies and are making money from their stock. I have yet to hear 1 of these presidential candidates come out with one idea to handle this problem.[:@]

Here is my next car;) I am serious, my Focus needs two more years. These are schedule to start production in 2010.
I am going to have a big FU to certain nations in the middle east:D http://www.chevrolet.com/electriccar/ |

What happened to all of the cheap oil we were supposed to get from Iraq after we liberated them?;)[:'(][&o][&o]

RE: Ok, gas prices are starting to affect my hunting
Guys at my work are suffering as well. We used to work 12 hour shifts, now we are back to 8 hours shifts. For many of the guys, they travel 50-60 miles round trip and the added workdays per month have really cost them in terms of fuel costs. Something is going to give here shortly and it is not going to be good......

RE: Ok, gas prices are starting to affect my hunting
I only live a few miles from my work and am seriously starting to consider riding my bike to work.

I drive 70 miles roundtrip to work mostly highway. Now I have a truck in the driveway that doesn't get used andI am still paying on. To boot I am trying to sell it but no one wants to buy a truck right now with the fuel prices. I am feeling the pinch big time, it sucks living in a city as there is not hunting around. I am actually planning to move in a few years whenI can find another job opening in the military.Hopefully somewhere in the country that I can hunt. I read that if thespeculative money was removed from the price of oil, the price would drop $40 a barrel. That is B.S.[:@]The feds need to stop lowering interest rates and bring the value of the dollar back up!!!!!!!!!!! end of rant! |
RE: Ok, gas prices are starting to affect my hunting
At times it gets me angry, but then again, I know I can't do much about it. I bought and 05 Tacoma in December KNOWING gas prices are only going to go up. I didn't want the fullsize truck fuel economy. I get about 20-21mpg now in the warmer weather in combined driving. I commute 30 miles a day to work, and my fuel bill is about $40 a week. I can only justify ONE vehicle at the moment, and as such, it has to be a truck since I need the ability to haul. The days of big trucks (and diesel especially) as daily drivers are over. I agree, though, the politicians all get kickbacks, because it never would have been allowed to get to this point. Most of it is due to our weakening dollar, and increased foreign investment in the oil market...it has very little to do with supply/demand, IMHO. Luckily I hunt on the land that I live on, so I have no commute, but I want to get out and fish more this spring/summer, but probably won't. If I wasn't considering buying a house/land in a year or so, I would buy a dual sport to commute on to fishing spots in the summer.

RE: Ok, gas prices are starting to affect my hunting
I feel for you guys , it really sucks . Fuel prices over here in UK are now £1.29 = $2.60 per litre for diesel , £1.22 = $2.44 petrol . I get about 40-45mpg in my diesel ****** estate , carries everything i need . But even at that i am feeling the squeeze , it ain't funny no more [:@].
Is diesel a good option in the states , seems a lot of people still drive petrol mainly . Diesel is supposed to be cleaner than petrol , but in the UK it costs more and still keeps getting taxed . Its never right , they say we will be paying £1.50per litre in another 3 months . How are people supposed to cope with such price climbs ? |

I have a 190 mile round trip from my residence to my property. Between gas prices and the taxes that I pay on the place, it's starting to hurt.

My 5300.00 dollar a month Diesel bill sucks ass big time!! It use to be 1800.00 a month and I'm putting on less miles now then I use to. I'm a self employed milk hauler and no I can't raise my hauling fee other wise I would of done that long ago. So yes my hunting has been affected allot, I don't do hardly any out of state hunting anymore.

my boat burns 1000 gal. of fuel every 24 hours

It's going to kill me this fall. Our lease is 220 miles away. Might have to stick to just hunting the rut.

I'll have a 4 hour drive on Friday night going to the hunting grounds for the weekend. Its gonna hurt but I HAVE to go! I'm glad I found a place to hog hunt really close to home.

RE: Ok, gas prices are starting to affect my hunting
I'm putting about $450-500 a month in the tanks of our 2 vehicles. We've considered downsizing vehicles, but they are both paid for. Besides....Dodge Durango's don't sell very fast with $3.80 gas prices.

RE: Ok, gas prices are starting to affect my hunting
Try owning a boat that burns 10 gallons an hour (and that's not even that bad: 2 mpg)... doesn't make filling the truck seem so bad when a fill-up on the boat is well over $200! Hunting's becoming lots cheaper than fishing.
