First full shed hunt of the year
#1
The snow finally melted up at camp and I broke away for an afternoon with my brother in law to do a little shed hunt, last Tuesday. Because my brother was coming on Friday, we decided to save a new area that had never been hunted until he got there....so we went to a spot I've been to twice in the last two years.
It started out pretty good, finding a few sheds that had been out there for a year or two. Then we finally got to an area where I found a few fresh ones last year. I had figured they would be on the south side of the hill and looked everywhere.....wrong, they were on the north side. Weird. I first found two fresh ones within 5 minutes of each other about 75 yards apart.
The first one was from a buck that we had found the matched set the year before, about 100 yards from this years.

When I spotted the second one, I thought it was the other side. Until I picked it up and noticed it was close, but definately a different deer.

We looked everywhere to find the other sides to these two bucks, but to no avail. We decided to move down the ridge further. Doug spotted a nice moose shed under a pine tree. It was obvious it had been laying there for quite a few years and was put back under the tree.

After that we looked high and low in that area and found a couple more older sheds. We decided to head back to the ATV and drop off a couple of our finds and start heading south.
We ended up finding a pile of older sheds, but only one more fresh one.
Here's a couple pics of some old whitetail sheds we left out there and a moose shed that had been there for a loooooooong time.

I also took a walk to a spot where I had found a dead moose 2 years ago. I like to visit this spot every year and see how much it changes every year. When I got there the skull was laying about 30 feet from where I put it last year. I propped it back up on the rock and snapped a couple pics.
Last year.....

This year.....

Over all it was a good day. I ended up finding 16 whitetail sheds and 3 moose sheds. Doug ended up with 12 whitetail sheds and 1 moose shed. Of the 32 we found, only 3 were fresh. I would have liked to find more fresh bone, but thats the way it goes.
I was looking forward to my brother coming up on Friday so we could spend 4-5 good days of shed hunting together with our buddies. Saturday morning we woke up to a rude sight.....it was snowing and blowing like mad. We ended up getting 14" of the white crap. My brother and his buddies had planned on being up for 1 week, but decided to head home on Sunday and come back in a couple weeks after the snow melts. Well, I ended up jumping in the truck and heading back to WI myself for a couple days.
Here's a pic of our office on Sunday after the snow.

I also apologize for not taking a picture of all the sheds together from Tuesday. We were planning on laying them out in the yard, but it got busy and then the snow came. I'll get some pics of those and more in the near future.
